  1. Dear friends and honored members of RWG, I am very sorry to say I have sad news about our friend Cats. Cats was a gentleman named Bert Jager who lived in the Netherlands. He had a treasured son named Pim. After a long struggle with cancer, Bert succumbed to the disease on November 18th of this year. Bert was a gentleman and a well respected member of our small community, one of the earliest members here after we migrated from the "old" RWG, with nearly 8 years, and nearly 4,000 thoughtful posts. Bert had a kind word for everyone and his life epitomized optimism. Even in his final posts here he spoke of the joy of spending time with his son. His signature was simple, and a challenge to us all. "Carpe Diem". Seize the Day. Thank you all for your many kind words of encouragement to Bert. If you would like, there is a web site where you can leave words of encouragement for Pim. I'm sure he will treasure those in the years to come: http://www.mensenlinq.nl/overlijdensberichten/bert-jager-6023175 There is also contact information where you may send written regards that will be delivered to the family: Uitvaartbegeleiding in Harmonie T.a.v. familie Jager Oude Lind 35, 5046 AL Tilburg Netherlands Thank you all for your stalwart support of this good man. "We few, we happy few ... we band of brothers". Carpe Diem, Nanuq

  7. thank you @Legend i stumbled over this post too late - however i do feel that other senior members could tell much more about Bert - i never contacted him privately but from posts i remember there surely are a few qualities that come to my mind when thinking about him.. to me he always seemed to be a reasonable and sensitive guy when posting something. I often remember that his opinions had an encouraging and even-handed touch so sad we loose a great guy as a person and valuable member of our community.

  8. Cats, having recently lost 2 family members to cancer, I have tended to remain silent during your struggle as there is little to say that you have not already heard. Still, I cannot tell you how sorry I am to hear the disheartening news. But try to hang in there as many new cancer treatments are in the pipeline which, while they may not provide a cure or long-term remission, may give you (usable) time & be a bridge to the next 'new treatment'.

  9. Thanks for all the kind words. Changed bracelet. Modified a Yuki 93250. Drilled out to take 2mm bars. Beat it up with a wire brush, took the polish off the sides. Then finished with synthetic 000 steel wool. WSO 580 end links seem to fit the best with a little sanding. Soaked her in bike lube and mineral oil and.... I think this will work nicely until I find a gen. In all honesty for $75 and 5 hours of labor it looks and feels great. Sent from my droptop using telepathy.

  10. The secret is out! You just discovered the quartz watch mechanic's secret...lighter fluid!, although most use the Ronsonol brand in the yellow bottle or can. Lighter fluid is the same thing as $45 a gallon watch rinse. It's not a cleaner but a rinse, and this is usually all you need on a quartz watch. I know at least three pro repair guys who use it on quartz watches. It is a very good idea to remove the circuit board and coil to prevent damage and many times you will need to take the movement apart and clean any metal 'whiskers' off the step motor on older movements. Follow up with a nano dose of light watch oil on pivots and awaaay they go. I bet I have rinsed out a few hundred Miyota 2030/2035 with Ronsonol. Heat welded plastic movements such as the Hattori (Seiko) PC20/21 etc will stop and can not be taken apart (they also do not take kindly to lighter fluid) but they can usually be jumped off by spinning the sweep second hand around clockwise a couple dozen times and applying a tiny bit of oil here and there. The PC sells for around $5 and the Miy 2030/35 for around $7. I have a friend who owns a Miy 2035 powered watch that has been running for over 20 years (rinsed/oiled twice, once after a trip through the washer/dryer in a coat pocket) and have a few PC 21 running for over 10 years in miniature brass clocks. The 377 batts go for about a year and a half in either one. They are just about the toughest analog quartz movements around. For special occasions... Made up a Mickey Mouse watch using a Disney 'Blue Sky Mickey' dial, goldtone Dauphine hands, PC20 in a 34mm round snapback 14k Bulova case from 1953 sporting a gen-u-wine black shark skin strap and gold Bulova buckle. No snobby gold oysterquartz el prezidente for me thank you. Miy 2025 and PC20 have two hands. Miy 2030/35 and PC21 have three hands.
