I reckon a decent watch salesman who actually enjoys his work will be able to tell a rep from the smoothness (not the beat rate), but he needs to be looking for it. If you ask "Is this a gen or a rep" then he will find out. If he's not looking for it, it's not the sort of thing you'd spot on the wrist.
