Fitted mine with the spine tool then broached the inside out as Fred described to do. Works perfectly now and is happily living my Milgauss 6541 build

Uff, to be honest I would not start to remove the date function.

 

Please don't waste a gen Tudor movement! Sell it and buy 4x 2783 for that money, or keep it in your parts drawer for another project.

Hi 1680, I tend to agree with you, but i was lucky and bagged the movement for a small sum of money. Also the rotor is so much quieter than the standard eta movements. I guess i could always store the calendar parts and if i ever tire f the 1016 then i can always pop in an eta movement. 

What needs removing?

Hi Chaps, 

On with my next project, an Explorer 1016 using a Gen 16014 case which would normally take the 1570 movement.

I could really do with some advise regarding the Tudor 2784 eta movement(and Yuki adapter ring) i had in mind for this build. I assume that i need to remove the Calendar parts on the movement so the dial can sit flush? I'm using a Gen luminova service dial which will have the positioning feet removed so no issues there. If so what parts need to get taken off?

Appreciate any help on this one

Wearing my new arrival, picked up last night from denimhead.

 

To say im happy is not even close, since 5pm last night I must have spent at least 6 hours staring and the dial and the slow beat second hand sweeping round.

Looks great! Would love to see some in process shots of the modifications (especially the case and bezel rework).

i'm away from home this evening but i'll certainly load a few shots on here tomorrow night. The bezel was a leap of faith and thankfully worked out well. My fingers are still covered in blisters 

I'd love to keep it guys, problem is I've already commited to a gen 16014 case,gen Tudor movement and gen dial for my 1016 build so I'm over spent by a long way. Usual situation with this hobby, nothing comes along then all the bloody parts suddenly appear.

I guess I can always build another one in the future.

I've been offered a Gen dial today for my Franken 1016 build so this beauty is actually up for grabs, $550.00 would seal the deal, that's below the cost of the parts and Big Daz's modding fees so a great deal. Head only by the way, the bracelets my Gen 93150 and already allocated to another project.

Over the years  I've done the rounds in terms of every variant of Vintage Sub, as I've grown older with this hobby it seems my interest has also aged in terms of Rolex models. After my recent experience with a Phong cased based 6538 build I decided my next project would be another variant of the non crown guard sport models, the Mlguass 6541.

The Cartel Milgauss 6541 rep was launched quite a while ago now and seemed to go under the Radar in terms of interest. I do remember the mild hysteria when MBW released their version a few years earlier but after a few posts it became quite apparent to members that the watch was too flawed to ever be a believable option.

Biggest bonus for me on the Cartel one was that the watch was already fitted with a slow beat 2846, and the crown position was far better than the MBW.

As always the case is far too thick for the 65++ variants, I'm guessing a stock 1680 with the CG removed. A nice touch on the watch is that it comes with the anti magnetic Faraday inner case and spring loaded caseback (I'm sure it doesn't work) but a nice touch all the same.

So onto the Jobs that needed doing -

1.Replace the tube and crown for the correct Gen 6mm size, the rep comes with a large shiny triplock job

2. Re shape the case, I've thinned it out a bit on the underside and flattened the top of the lugs, its still too thick but looks much better thn it did on arrival. Interestingly enough while doing some online research some of the Gen Milgauss did seemed to have a slightly thicker case than the 6538.

Freddy am i right or totally wrong on this one?

3. The bezel was an interesting one, the rep has a lower ridge that needed removing so the coin edge bezel sat flatter to the case as per Gen. Metal file at the ready

4. I also wanted to see if i could get the bezel and retainer ring to work with the classic spring wire found on the Gen vintage subs. The rep is only held on with a rubber gasket! Hours later i finally managed to make the 2 parts work together, however it involved snipping the spring wire into 10mm pieces, filing them to half the thickness and wedging them between the bezel and the groove in the retainer ring. Amazingly its worked.

5. The rep insert isn't great so that was replaced with one of Michaels at CWP, the metal file came back out as it did need trimming in order to get it to fit the bezel.

6. Then it was over to Big Daz's place for Lug drilling, a Lume tint and a bit of general aging to the hands and dial. I like the rust spot at 6pm nothing like a bit of water damage!

I also got him to replace the Coronet for a Gen one, must sharper than the rep one.

So there you have it, hope that's maybe hilighted this slightly over shadowed rep a bit. Hopefully you like the end result

The silver eta discs have now arrived and the good news was that the original post stated a wrong price. Communication dollars to pounds breakdown with the maker! No flat 3's yet but I'm working on it, I've also physically compared these with the Cartel version and these are far better in terms of silver background texture which is less grainy and the print quality is sharper.

If the gen doesnt fit then you have the wrong tube. The tubes are made exact gen specs. Ive used them on tons of builds and never had a problem. Contact Gary (clarks) and ask what type of tube you need and he'll let oyu know. 

Weird Mike as the tube is from Cousins here in the UK is Made to Gen spec as well. Is this a 24-600 or something else?

So the tube doesnt fit the case? or does the crown not fit the tube?

The crown won't go through the tube. The inner diameter is too small, I wondered about fixing it in place with the spine tool then drilling out the middle. Not the best solution but I'm not happy about having to buy another Gen Crown

Greatly appreciate any imput into my dilema regarding this crown not fitting a cousins tube. The crown was bought as a 24-600 so i bought a 24-6000 tube from cousins. The crown inner is too wide to pass through the tube. Have I bought something else here guys?

Are they sized for a 1570 movement/dial or ETA? I mean for the date window.

They are for correctly spaced for the eta based movements not the Gen 1570

Iconic Zenith based Daytona, against something i can buy on every high street in the UK from Goldsmiths? Hmmm, I think i know which one I'd prefer on my wrist mate 

Seems to be fine now, I fully de-cased it and left it all airing overnight. Took the time to remove a few dust particles on the dial and inner crystal. I also polished up the springbar tips and fitted a cartel folded bracelet this morning. Sits nice on that as well.

That's a fair point on the Rolex front Dropbear, I've owned a 1680 in the past which was well used. But i still think that a lot of the modded stuff on here looks like its been attacked with a blow torch!

I've recently been investing in a few Vintage Divers watches and when this particular watch arrived it got me thinking about the amount of effort we spend on making our Vintage stuff look old. This Aquastar is actually from 1960, to be fair it does seem to be hardly worn as the dial and hands still look almost new.

Are we over doing things for the sake of it??? I now FXAndy has an opinion on this particular issue

If you bought a V72 Based Daytona off Him,chances are you where looking at pictures of my V72 mounted in one of his cases. I originally sent him a V72 for my own Daytona build.

Never saw it again, hence my departure from the EU based Distribution venture for his parts and watches. Thanks God I didn't send him the Gen dial!
