The `62 bubble top Bel-Air was a very rare car even back then. In the days of premium ethyl gasoline at under 30¢/gallon the way to more power was to pour more gas in it. 3 deuces and dual quads were all the rage. Unfortunately the 409 had it's limits in RPMs and blew up a bunch. But that was the year my favorite engine came out, the 327 cubic inch with the small journal forged crank. The modifications available over the years is astounding. It even ran at Indy.

Truth be told, what is a gen Rolex really worth? We build replicas all the time with movements just as good and just as accurate most for well under for under $1000 usd. The name on the dial and people wanting that name makes the price so much higher.

At least some 50,000 soldiers and the local town had a population of about 80,000. Likely less than 500 ladies of the evening, I'd think supply and demand was about right. Given the soldeier's age and activity levels, time for the ladies was not much of a factor.

In 1972 I was in the service making about $325/month. Truck drivers Teamster union was making $3.94/hour. A beer was 25¢. A 'good time' with a professional lady was $10.

In 1984 I had a customer who had an employee buy a brand new genuine Rolex Submariner. I wasn't aware of Rolex at the time. He paid $600.00 usd. We laughed at him and told him he was nuts to pay that much for a watch. In 1998 I looked at 16710 GMT at the Rolex store in Waikiki. It was $4,000.00 usd. Today a new GMT is over $9.000.00 usd. A commodity will sell for as much as someone will pay. Regardless how nuts I still think they are.

I've been building my own for a few years now, and evidently lost touch with what the 'Trusted Dealers' are offering now. I ordered a Pepsi ceramic GMT for my son from Andrew, and it's a nice one. I know the supposed reputation of the 'noob' factory, but what are these other factories characteristics, quality, accuracy, etc.? BP, GM, KS and more. They sure got very expensive!

I too use a piece of PVC tube cut to fit, a wood piece on the back of the case, and my 4" vise.
