  1. I love my AceTimer 8+12, however, being an electronics guy I felt the need to hack/mod it.

    AceTime Pro's

    Bang for the buck

Quite (4 pods spinning 10' away from bed does not disturb)

Great with "gens", ETA 28xx, Seiko, Miyota, Vostok

    AceTime Con's

    Fuzzy Logic = no logic

Does not work well with A7750, Seagull, 50% of 21J's, or "one way" automatic movements

No independent on/off per pod on the big guys like my 8+12.

No manual override for CCW or CW

The problem with the one way auto movements is the fuzzy logic is simply-- on MAX 1000 TPD, 500 CW then 500 CCW

From my experience the A7750 needs 650 TPD CW. See the issue? All the winder does with my A7750 and Segull and some 21J's is extend their reserve from ~36 hours to ~96 hours/1 week.

I hacked mine to include a CW/CCW/Fuzzy switch and separate power switch for each pod. Works with anything now. ;)

Highly recommended, but just be aware if you are A7750 heavy.

  2. Does anybody know if the rep farraday case is in fact effective to the same or similar degree to resist magnetization as the gen??

I doubt the rep makers are skilled at building real faraday cases/cages. It may filter ONE type of wavelength. Also most faraday installations require grounding.

A Faraday cage/case will not shield its contents from static magnetic fields. However, rapidly-changing magnetic fields create electric fields. The conductors cancel the electric fields and therefore the changing magnetic fields as well. The wall materials' thickness and skin depth set the frequency at which the cage/case suppresses electromagnetic fields. Static or slowly-changing magnetic fields penetrate the case/cage; rapidly-changing ones do not.

Long story short, you are probably safe from radio waves, but not an old school magnet. The rep cases about as good as the shielding on a coax cable used to connect your cable box.

  3. Based on the reference books I have, it looks like a mash-up.

5508's according to one book should be a Cal 1530, Mercedes hands, Single line Submariner txt -or- 2 line 100m/330ft Submariner txt.

The hands look like they are off a 1953 Explorer 6298 (Subs only used Pencil hands (6200's), Sword Hands (mil spec), and Mercedes hands)

Even the dial looks like it was some form of Explorer re-dial minus the Explorer txt.

To me this looks like an Explorer I and Submariner had a baby. Definitely not a 1958 5508 IMHO.
