Has anyone tried to fit a Gen 5.3 crown to this case and tube set?

Probably. It was completely flat--seriously, I was using it as a spacer in my crystal press-- so I just bent it back by hand. I will try to tweak it some more, there's a bit too much of a gap between the inside of the insert and the outside of the crystal.

Thanks S - creative use of an old insert ! It looks really great. Is this bezel size a true 1675 size or more of a newer 16700 size? I have a couple of gen faded 16700 inserts and wonder if they might work in one of these?

It's the one that came with the watch. I contacted trevor to see if I could buy some more as parts, but he seems to think I want 3 more watches...

Let me be the first to congratulate you on the upgrades - great stuff!

I believe the 16600 T <25 dial was used up to 1998 when Luminova dials were first introduced and as such the case probably should have lug holes drilled - this would then finish the build off even more?

The last shot of the dial texture is really great!

So would you be able to call some one out if they had a modern 703 on say a 1680?

Moving on - No, I was not saying that at all. My point is simply that an authentic, period crown adds a visual authenticity , to what is after all a replica watch, regardless of component build.

This is NOT because a modern 703 on a 70's piece means 'it is a replica' - it simply means it is not 100% original and has maybe had a service crown fitted (assuming you know the subject matter - which the majority of Joe public do not!).

In my opinion, It is just a more visual feature on the wrist, as can be clearly seen in your pictures above, than say the serif on the insert font (that many love to get just right!!!), or minutae detail of the seconds hand (that 'higho' correctly points out - great info , thanks), or the font and red print of the word Submariner on the dial etc. And, or colour matching the pearl lume to the indices? (My 1979 Sub insert has a modern pearl, cos I cant find and wont pay the price for an original T lume pearl - dial is dead and pearl glows like a beacon )

The Cg's are also in partnership with the crown itself. In that the shape/angles etc with the original 702, or early wrapped triplocks, or more beveled variety (like the OP picture of the Gen above) do look different than when matched with a modern 703, or 704, which is a different shape entirely.

We all replace 'fat Rep' crowns with Gen 703's as a super , low cost upgrade; and I guess we would (?) all replace 703's with the period correct 702's, or others, if we could find them and afford them with their beloved tubes - because they look better, and are authentic to period.

Of course, if you get the watch off and under the loupe, or before a trained eye - all of the above are equally important. But hopefully, none of us lot are trying to pass anything off as Gen anyhow.

Now I am confused .....here's a few of mine anyhow - everyone is different and probably all wrong!.

Nice insert choice with some natural age, is the insert sloping up a little steep? It seems to be, and hence reducing the profile of the plexi - or is it just the angle of the shot?

Also, which date wheel did you use - is it white with open 6 and 9 and flat 3 from the original watch or an upgrade?

On a more general note, the one thing that always leaps at me on vintage builds is the crown and CG relationship. The Gen picture illustrates this so clearly.

This comment is not aimed at yours, as I cannot even see it. There is absolutely no subs[censored]ute for the correct period crown and corresponding CG's.

The modern, OEM 703/704 never seems to do it for me. An earlier vintage 703 with vintage stretched coronet, or a 702 really finishes off the build and adds 'real authenticity'. It is the one feature that can be spotted easily on the wrist - much easier than a font serif, or whatever finer detail on the dial!

Cant wait to see the finished article.................

I assume the prices you quote do not include the gen end links as none are shown? These alone can add substantially to the price/cost - especially if 585's!

Certainly looks a gen bracelet and clasp as others have said.

I have never seen a rep 93150 with flat 3 on the oyster link or for that matter seen a Gen 93150 with rounded 3 on the clasp. Rounded 3's have appeared on Gen 78360 clasps.

If anybody has a verified 'Rep' oyster with flat 3s on the oyster end link, please share with us all
