  1. Years and years ago we had an exceptional watchsmith here who has gone on to the land of Gens.  His name is legendary.  My 62 year old Sub 6536 needed a service so I sent it to him.  He did it up and sent photos and then mailed it back home.  It was, as expected, perfect.  It was only then he told me The Rest Of The Story.

He had disassembled my trusty 1030 movement and put all the components and corresponding screws into one of those trays with all the dished segments.  He started down the stairs to his laundry room where his ultrasonic cleaner lived, and ....... tripped.       Like a fountain at Las Vegas, parts arced out into the air in a glistening cascade and tinkled on the floor as they fell.

He spent two days on his hands and knees with a flashlight, and he found every last part.  Or he slipped a couple Timex screws in there and I'm none the wiser.

That opera singer gf of mine said that Bach was the greatest composer of all time. Guess she was right.

Y'know if you stop a moment and put yourself in his shoes, he wasn't all that different than we are today.  Granted he was a genius musically, but imagine him doing his thing, having a good day, he wrote a couple delicate little 2-part inventions before breakfast, it's all good.  He steps out to go buy a tobacco and steps right in a platter sized pile of horse crap that his fricken neighbor left behind, and dammit it just pisses him off!  How many times has he told that b@stage to park his horse further down the road?!!  So he has to go back inside and change his shoes, he's just FRIED about that stinking neighbor,  and sits at the piano bench.  He struggles with his shoe lace, gets madder and madder, leans back and his elbow hits the keyboard, plays 3 notes and as he spins around, his elbow slides down the keys.

And just like that, the Tocatta and Fugue in Dmin is started.  He probably switched over to the organ and cranked it as loud as it would go, and blew the windows out of the house.

Ahhhhhhhh, it's good to be passionately alive.

  3. Sadly, I hit a moose last November and caved in the front end. I spent a few months tracking down parts and finally have them in hand. Today is the start of tearing her down, hammering out panels and getting her back on the road.

No you can’t just undo fasteners, with all the alloys there the bolts are corroded from galvanic action. So get out the grinder.

No you can’t just strip paint off the replacement wings and bonnet, it’s acrylic based. What in the heck strips acrylic? Don’t use a sander and ruin that perfect metal finish under the paint!

No you can’t just hammer the panels, you have to anneal them with an acetylene torch...but don’t melt them! Then hammer and work them awhile before annealing some more.

It’s a process, and it makes you hate, or love, these old cars even more.

  4. * Where I am in life...  work is incredibly challenging, incredibly dangerous, and the b@stages keep trying to promote me out of the job I love to do.  I have a good woman at my side, everything else is secondary.

    * Status of the collection...  too dang many watches.  I'm up to 18 and I'd be happy with 6,  just the vintage gens.

    * Milestones...  my daughter finally met a man I approve of and they were married.  I walked her down the aisle, and whispered in his ear "tag, you're it".

  5. My first genuine Rolex... I like the watch. I hate the stigma. It's a conflict.

It’s only a conflict if you care what others think about you and how you live your life. Do YOU like it? Then what does it matter how the next guy feels about it?

I know you’re smarter than to fall for that B.S.
