  1. If Maciek says it's genuine then it's genuine (which it obviously is). I would never doubt his words. I was just wondering about the dial. Actually it wasn't the first time I've observed this.

I believe the subdials ARE closer/larger in the black version as you can see from the comparison picture he posted. I don't think anyone on RWG ever noticed this before. I also scrolled through several gen pictures and always see the same thing. This would make the black rep version closer to the genuine.

More gen pics (I doubt it's just a "optical illusion"):

  2. Oops, you're right I did. That was sloppy. So... apparently the black version of new Daytona HAS larger subregister diameter (or longer markers) which makes the subdials look closer to the hour markers. We learn something new every day, eh?

I hope I'll get it right this time. Here's two genuines that have the same difference as your watches.

  3. That's what made me erronously assume the black one is a fake. Perhaps it could be a aftermarket dial?

All genuine newer (post El Primero) Daytonas (that I've seen) have a noticeable gap between the subdials and 2 and 10 hour markers. The black one you show also have the 9'o'clock hour marker closer to the sub register. Also the Swiss Valjoux 7750 version have them correct. However ALL Asian 7750-powered Daytonas (that I've seen) don't have the gap.

I'm not saying this is ALWAYS the case though, I'm far from being a Daytona expert.

The factory photos show it too:

  4. Taking a second look... there IS a gap between the subdials and hour markers in the black one too. This is wrong in the Asian 7750 powered reps so I assumed... what I assumed. Subdials in black version ARE closer to hour markers than in the white one though. Wonder why...

But I got taken with this one.

  5. The upper subregisters are touching the 10'o'clock and 2'o'clock hour markers in the black version which looks dead wrong. Otherwise it's a great looking watch though.

The white version looks mighty good and correct. Is it equipped with Swiss 7750?

  6. This kind of car. Audi A6 1998 model.

The law firm where I'm working at has a E270 CDi Mercedes which I use occasionally. I'm not a car person, really but I like the reliability of my Audi. It has been very good car. Inherited it from my grandfather.

  7. Really nice SD, I like it.

Generally... I don't want any more Rollies but just like my friend Eunomians I can consider a modern SD (if a decent one comes out). This is the best I've seen no doubt. Actually it might be the same watch as the old TW best version.

  8. Thanks emuozz.

The picture probably flatters the pearl, it's not that great. Just a standard rep pearl which has just been pushed further inside. Genuine pearl looks different but I'm planning to install a gen pearl eventually.

Here you can see it better:

  9. Wow...cant believe its so good. I did read about the bezel re-alignment...unfortunately i would be too nervous to do that myself, but im sure i could find someone to do it (unless it really is easy!).

Do you mind if i ask where you purchased it, because i am looking longingly at Trusty's current version at the moment. Its either this or the Planet Ocean in Black...i wish i could have both but alas im a student :(

    Jon

Mine is the "old batch" SMP and it's originally purchased from King (about a year ago). All dealers used to sell the same watch. Just look at the dealers' catalogs and compare the pics. I don't go to dealers' photo albums that much so I dunno who still sells it, sorry.

  10. Hey By-Tor,

Lovely wallpaper...great watch. I just read your article on polishing the SMP...the bracelet looks dead on when you get the brushed look back. Could i ask if there are any mods done to this SMP, because i have been trying on the gen recently and yours looks pretty darn good! :)

    Thanks,

    Jon

Thanks for the comments Bilbo. No, I don't have any mods done, except I have aligned the bezel correctly - and polished & brushed the bracelet, just like you mentioned. Everything else is "out of box"... the SMP rep is just that "darn good". :)

  11. They seem to have a ripoff of of Rolex GMT Master as well.

Always the same story. Most of these "frugal" watch companies copy the design of Rolex, Omega and sometimes Panerai. Maybe it's their only way to sell some watches?

Gotta admire Seiko and Citizen. They have followed the trends, yes, but they always had their own approach.

  12. I don't think I've ever seen a vintage GMT with a Serif font. Most that I've seen use this same font but with thinner numbers... and sometimes darker blue color.

I wouldn't obsess over the colors and bezel numbers too much. Almost all genuine preowned GMT's have replacement inserts. Sellers usually throw in a new insert because it's a cheap way of making the watch look better.

Here's a typical example of a vintage insert:

Edit: Ah, Manuel I see you deleted your question about vintages. Well I answered anyway. ;)

  13. It's an ok bezel. The numbers are a little bit too high (they don't perfectly fit inside the insert ring). But that's just a minor annoyance. It's always hard to tell from the pictures but the colors look ok. Pepsi should have slightly lighter red than Black-Red (Burgundy).

GMT Master II comes with 2 different fonts. We have been going through this gazillion times. Some new genuines have the Serif font, some have this font (so it's correct).

I don't know why so many people insist that the GMT's _only_ come with the Serif font when it's simply not true.

Here are the new GMT's from Basel and they use this same font (non-Serif).

Here's one with the Serif font. Notice the miniscule difference in 2, 4.
