i've been paying around 6bucks a gallon for YEARS now, it only increased about 60-70cents over the past few years. I recall that last time I was in the US, Gas was at 1,80 (unleaded) per gallon, and that was in q1 '05

So it appears that in the US, it would be fair to say that an average price is around $3/gallon.

How does this equate to our $5 + and some prices I see there from the UK and Europe, which are even higher? Surely the oil has to be shipped- so the freight content, would not vary much? One would expect there not to be too larger variance in processing costs ( I realise that the US is a much larger market- so the costs may be marginally lower), but that still doesn't explain these huge variances.

The only other thought I have would be taxes- I know in Oz we pay a VERY large tax on fuel ( interestingly some states are lower than others) but the state tax is not big. Its our Federal government who take the lions share

You start at almost 2000$ a month as a trainee!

Those Jet pilots are doing a helluva job, it would be just right for them to earn at least as much as civilian pilots. Its silly to think, just because they are doing "countries services" they can be exploited while risking their life every day!

Prison Guard is also "countries service", or what do you think WHO the guards protect? Large Companies? No, its YOU and your family who is protected by prison guards.

btw. a civilian earns about 5000-10000$ but you cant compare a JET Pilot to a civilian pilot. Flying an F16 and flying a B747 arent even the same ballpark!

There is a reason for this, and it is because as a prison guard you are putting your life at risk. Seems to be a good reason to pay someone alot to do a little.

OK, well an orthopeic surgeon is different than a hospital doctor. Average in the US for that is $157K which seems a little more in line to me than the $276K you mentioned. Doctors in general don't make what they used to around here. Unfortunally, I wish we were like Germany in that our school teachers should be paid more. I don't know how many of them do it.

As for the equivalence for schooling in the US, I don't know how to compare that with the EU. But, I can tell you that all schools in the US are not created equal. There can be dramatic differences in the levels of education between different schools throughout the country. I'm sure the EU is the same.

Well, there might be differences in the schools, but still they all have to do the same stuff at the same time. My senior AP English class was as a matter of fact easier than the english class over in germany. And WE dont even have the highest education standarts... If you look at Japan... man, those kids are almost rocket scientists when they are 15 years old!

And btw. a heart transplatn surgeon earns almost 400k, and works at a hospital also i'm pretty sure alltogether the average is above 200k for a doctor (regardless of specialization)

when i read those numbers... 400k a year... some even get a million at berkeley... it pisses me off, that I droped my biology classes a long time before graduating and switches to econ!

I couldn't afford the cars you were talking about buying in one of your other threads and I make over 100k per year. A bmw z4 costs double of what a mustang does...

If a mustang costs 17k, a z4 should cost 34k (according to your statement). thats about as much as i would have to pay. remember i'm paying EUROS. divide that by 1,21 and you get the $ amount!

i dont know what you standart of living is, but i earn a lot less than 100k a year. even if you substract 30k you still have 70k for the year, that is still about 3-4times as much as the average family income

and i cant afford a z4 either without a good credit. have to wait till they make me a better offer than 7%!

I would love to see this article. There is no way doctors in the US make that much $$. And, what basis is there that german doctors have better education and are better doctors?

the median (nationwide) for an orthopedic surgeon (for example) is $306,664 per year. In LA the median is $349,526. Aparently there IS a way that doctors make that much $$$ in the USA...!

And whats the basis for europeans having better education? Mostly what Edge already said.

And a little example:

When I was in 10th grade in Germany, I went to a High School in america for a year. Thy put me in 12th grade over there, and even though I had a C- at best in English over in Germany, I was on the Honor Roll and one of the best students of my senior class. Even though I was about 2-3years junger than everybody else. I took the hardest classes I could possibly take (AP Enlish, Calculus, Adv. Math and stuff).

When you graduate in Germany, you are about at the same level as a sphomore College student in the US!

The only problem, why german universitys are not very well known, is because there is really no competition among the universitys over here. College was mostly free of charge. They are now starting to take fees, but they are still a lot lower than in the US (not more than ~900$ per year). Still education is very good over here.

BUT if I was going to be a doctor, I would try to get in a US University and apply for a job over there. Why? Because I would make about 6x as much money

Doctor is not a very atrative job over here... you get paid more as a high school teacher! plus most high school teachers can NOT get fired, because they are employed by the government.

And some ppl in the US even earn much more money... I read an article today:

Doctor at a Hospital in Germany earns 56.000$ avg.

Doctor at a Hispital in the USA earns 276.000$ avg.

BUT German doctors have a better education and are the better doctors.

Still cars and gas is cheaper in the US

i just got back from the doc... i should have taken nanuqs advice from the beginning and had them ALL removed by myself.

first i had to wait 1,5HOURS even though I had an apointment, and then they let ppl in who came way after me. After the 4th guy went in there, i went to the counter and i was like "hello? is this a joke or something? the doc charges my insurance company 3 times as much as he does for all the others here, and i'm waiting for over 1,5hours now and you let ppl through who came AFTER me? this is definetly the last time I came here!"

I was sent in right after I complained (funny, huh?) and the doctor told the nurse to remove them and walked out.

Aparently the nurse was too stupid to remove them, cause removing them hurt a lot more than sewing them without painkillers. And it was bleeding pretty bad after she removed them.

Funny thing is, when I removed some of the outside stiches, it didnt hurt at all and there was also no blood at all.

I can already see the bill "Removing stiches, 900$"...

maybe now you know, why i cant afford to drive a crazy motherf*cker hummer or SUV or equivalent! at 12miles per galon it would be cheaper to fly with an airplane!

just bought gas about 10 minutes ago at $2.89/gallon for the cheap stuff (87 octane)

WTF? Last year it was like 1.80$ per gallon over in the US!!

But its still less than half what we pay over here for gas!

i think the seller is trustworthy, he is (or at least was) selling on a board where only genuine watches are being sold (watchnet.com) and the ad where i got his contact info from clearly sais original rolex.
