  1. Don't want to sound like an @ss but I really don't care. It mostly are those brands that nobody really cares about. The worth of these watches is made up by the amount of gold used and the movement (brand value=zero). I would do the same as most of the time these watches are hard to sell and assembled seldomly generate the amount they are truely worth. Ergo the best choice is to rip it apart and sell the guts because people just don't appreciate these watches/ brands. Sort of like some Frankens...

    That's nature's cycle ;)

It's a shame when items of historical interest are lost, but sadly, these are tough times financially, people need money, and if they can get more for the gold value of the watch as scrap rather than an outright sale, it's only natural that they go with the best return :pardon:

  3. Teejay, great sub for the cash that one you linked to on cqout......been a few years since I browsed cqout, I bought some great watches on there years ago, off the dealer above and I remember tonyxkf (well before watcheden) seller there, got some right bargains dirt cheap from him at the time, glad to see some of the dealers are still going on the site.

I mean sure, there aren't any serial numbers between the lugs, the sticker on the back reads 11610 ( :bangin: ) and of course, the engravings on the clasp leaves are gibberish, but those're things which really only matter if the watch is to come off the wrist and to be handed over for inspection (ie passed off as gen) under 'regular observation', it looks the business, and I can't fault it :) Likewise, I miss doing business with Tony, since he left CQout and began WatchEden, circumstances have prevented me having the cash to buy from him, which is frustrating, but such is life :pardon:

  4. With Tudor's.....you can't just have one!

Trust me on this, now you need a rose dial.....and then a Monte Carlo...and then...... :)

That is sooooooo true, there's always another Tudor to acquire  With Rolex, there's never really been much variation in dial layouts, but Tudor really embrace variety :)

  5. That's a very fair price for a high quality a21j sub

The only issue I've had with regards water resistance, was after I'd had the watch a while, and decided to re-set the crystal, which was offset by 1 degree clockwise. I suspect that in addition to the gasket seal, there was an additional epoxy seal (which I would have broken popping the crystal :whistling: ) but once I ran a bead of superglue round the gasket before finally re-setting the crystal, the watch is once more water resistant :tu: Sure, I'm not going to say that the watch I've shown is in the same league as a TC sub, but for the cost, I can't fault it, and it's certainly a good way of 'test-driving' the watch before deciding to upgrade (or in my case, convert to a 16800... ) and I've worn mine without challenge. Sure, an AD/pawnshop would know, but 'the man on the street' wouldn't have a clue, apart from the suspicious brandname ;)

  6. My experiences with Silix a few years back were not good: Poor QC, ie items sent out which were missing screws etc, and a missing jubilee bracelet is still probably floating around the world somewhere... But, I recently saw the budget 1665 on offer, and am going to let bygones be bygones to pull the trigger on one when funds allow :pardon:

[Edit to add] The only reason I'm prepared to do so, is because I haven't seen a 1665 at under $100 anywhere else...

  7. Given the above comments, then a Submariner should fit your needs perfectly :good: I would equally advise against buying the TC sub outright just in case, but, if you literally just want to give the watch a try, for this price, I'd highly recommend this watch and seller. They might not be on the forum's 'trusted dealer' list, but I've never had an issue with them, and only buy from anyone else if they don't have the specific watch I'm looking for :)

PS Before anyone starts whining about 'scams' and 'only using the trusted dealers' or any such BS, the site uses an inhouse escrow service which is more secure than any TD offering. I'm personally vouching for this seller and their high standards, so if anyone wants to cry foul, you'll be calling me a liar...

  8. I see nothing wrong with a SS sub and a suit! :) sub works great for any occasion :p

To be honest, I do agree with you, the sub is a fantastic all-rounder, especially if it's an 'only one watch' situation, but if I had the choice available of something like a DJ, then I wouldn't wear a sub with a suit :)

  9. I agree. I have worn my dads gen datejust a few times and people (who usually know naff all about watches) try and prove its "fake" somehow. Usually by saying the seconds hand is not moving smooth and consistently or something silly like that.

But anyway it doesn't need to be a top of the line replica. Just something decent that doesn't shout FAKE all over it. I have seen people wearing chinese quartz rolexes... Good god those are awful :wallbash:

I want to get into the rep collecting hobby but I don't want to get bashed like the quartz Rolex guy all day long

What do you think of this guys ?

Also how can I search for reviews of this exact watch ?

    Thanks.

That is the risk you run when wearing a watch with the R Word on the dial ;) The best way to minimize that, is to increase the plausibility of the watch, and the likelihood of owning the real thing, such as a simple DateJust, or a vintage model, which could have been inherited rather than purchassed (this will also mean artificially aging the watch, in addition to it being a vintage model) Another method, would be to go for a Tudor (any Tudor) Tudor equalls all the appearance and design of Rolex, but without the alarm-bell brandname, so they just fly beneath the radar :) As for quartz Rolexes... One of the favorites in my collection is a plastic Submariner, which I fitted with a Rolex dial for a cheap laugh: Anyone seeing it will likely ignore it completely, and anyone seeing it close up will immediately know it's fake, but, it keeps spot on accurate time, and the quartz movement won't be affected by the magnetic field of a tattoo machine as a mechanical movement could be :victory: The watch you've linked to looks nice, and although I don't know of any specific reviews for it, if you seach in the Rolex section, you may find a review :)

  10. If you want to be able to pass it off as the real thing, you're going to have to spend more than $200... I'd also suggest going for an Omega Seamaster rather than a Rolex Submariner, simply because people don't expect them to be fake, where even a genuine Rolex can get the "Is that a real Rolex?" question. In all honesty though, the chances of someone asking or even noticing what you're wearing is so slim, it's really not worth worrying about :good::drinks:

  11. If you want to avoid 'looking flashy', I would advise you to avoid the following watches: Any DateJust with a fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet, the Yacht-Master, the GMTII Ceramic, the latest Ceramic Submariners, and just to be safe, the Deep Sea Sea-Dweller. A flat-bezelled DateJust can be a fantastic 'everyday' watch, especially if with a white or black dial. Other than that, it depends what functions will be useful to you. The 1680 or 16610 Submariners make great watches for everyday use, but not the best with suits, where if you wanted to be able to track a second timezone, it might be worth looking at the GMT Master range :) Best of luck with your search :good::drinks:

  12. Long before most of you were born, the Rolex replicas that were available in the late 1980's were quartz-based watches and thus didn't exhibit the characteristic "sweep" that was associated with Rolex. Obsessed with the vintage Rolexes that we saw in an issue of GQ magazine, my friend and I sacrificed our Rolex quartz replicas to build Rolex watches with sweeping seconds hands. This is the result of our labour:

    rollie.jpg

It is a Timex that was transformed to a Rolex using the coronet from a replica dial and Letraset letters for the Rolex text on the dial. The watch is more than 20 years old. The watch was also "vintagized" so that it would resemble those beloved Rolex watches we saw in GQ magazine.

My name is Superlative, and I'm an original Rolex modder.

Now that, is the kind of project I like :good: Absolutely beautiful watch, if I ever find suitable parts, I will follow your example to achieve such a watch for myself :good::drinks:

  13. Looks like it fits the case lugs good like a Sinn U series rubber, looks to be a nice strap and clasp combo. Will it use the DSSD ratcheting clasp too?

Straps like this have been discussed before, and like those, I suspect the buyer will have to fit the clasps from their existing bracelets to the aftermarket strap :)
