  1. Almost... lol

Pug's gen speedy was purchased from the forum for $1000. I remember the sale offer and pulled the trigger too slowly. :( Thumbs up to Pug though...got one of his grail pieces for a great price...but more importantly, a grail piece like this stayed with the RWG community of active members!!

  2. I use my gen papers from an Explorer if I do take pics.. but to create an illusion for myself with documentation.. I don't find the need for it.. as the box and tags are enough..

To be honest Lani...given space constraints for me living in the heart of a big city, I'm not into the boxes...but for a Comex specifically, I think it would be quite fun to CREATE faux papers because of the history of how these watches were used.

There were a couple of interesting examples I've seen in auction because of the test results, Comex work history records, dive records, etc, that I think would be fun to create a fantasy record of. It would be a fun project with paper aging, ink fading, etc...obviously fake because the work histories are relatively easily verifiable through Comex records I would assume, if you could ever get access to them...which might in fact be next to impossible because of the confidential nature of some of their work...

The earlier Comex ones because of them being "gifted" almost as test engines for Rolex, have a different kind of paper trail which I think is far more interesting and would be fun to have a replica of, than standard box sets of items that were bought at Joe, Tom, [censored] and Harry's Rolex AD Shop.

I liken it to some of the vintagizing projects where the goal is to create a piece that has battle scars from use...but in the case of the Comex watches, some of the documentation that made these interesting include photos with folks like Theo Mavrostomos and what not. It would make for fun photos I think.

  3. And if all this advice and rush for help doesn't make you love this place...I don't know what will.

    :thumbsupsmileyanim:

This is unfortunately the joys of the rep game...certain things are bad on certain watches and need certain repairs. Once done...you're pretty good to go.

I would attempt to fix it yourself or have somebody local fix it upon opening it up and seeing if it's obvious what the problem is...rather than use up any "goodwill" customer service "tokens" from your dealer on something that can be solved hopefully relatively easily.

Like Lani said though, decent screwdrivers are a must...standard "jeweller's" screwdrivers from a hardware store may not cut it unless sharpened down and shaped so they can grab the head properly.

  4. Thanks for your reply. So if it is a detached rotor, what can I expect to find and what is the fix? If you would like to PM me a short tutorial or have a link that might be helpful, that would be great. My last message back from the dealer implied nothing can happen for another 10 days because of Chinese New Year. No return info provided yet.

As Lani's pic above shows...and the link I posted above, if the rotor is loose, there should essentially be 3 parts rattling about in there and you need to find all three:

    • Rotor cap (the disc Lani said is held in by glue)
    • The screw for the rotor
    • The rotor itself

The rotor is just screwed into the movement...easy peasy. You can choose to glue back the cap or toss it. The other potential is the clip Thogaa describes in his post that you can either Loctite in place or toss...your choice.

  5. And put back to the community you have with this post!! This is a great rep. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Nice pics...nice write-up...keep 'em coming!!!

BTW...if you use an "offline" picture hosting site like Photobucket or whatever, and link to the pics directly instead of "posting" them in the thread, you can get the pics right in line with your post so it can read more like an article with illustrative pics.

Size them for about 800x600...and you're good to go.

    Thanks for this!

  6. There seems to be a bit of a problem with the mod creating the 3135 movement. It's a cosmetic movement creation. Check out this post:

Thogaa's Post on Necessary Upgrades to the Asia 3135

I should have added more info:

    • Shipping back should be unregistered airmail (some risk but low)
    • Return shipping ~$15-20 USD
    • Time for return of watch from time of return shipping = ~2 months
    • Cost of attempting the fix above (it will be obvious if that's the problem) = ~$1.99 for latex gloves if you don't have duct tape to open the back ;)
    • And no...the dealer will not pick up the return shipping costs...only the shipping BACK to you. It's like buying mail order...but NOT from Costco or a big store that will pay for return shipping. If they cause a problem...you still have to pay to ship the goods back. C'est la vie!!

  7. Isn't a 2893 just a 2892 with a GMT plate on it? If so, it's not a stretch.

I think so...it's just that I can't get a 2893-2 new from my suppliers here. They have them in their catalogues but can't source them. They can get 2892's...but no GMT varieties. So, even though this thing exists now in ETA form...they can't seem to be had outside of buying a Steinhart or Defaubre donor watch with one in it.

If somebody came up with something more solid than the cheap mod done on the 2836's like a Sellita copy...I would think it would make an awesome upgraded movement option!!

  8. This is the Holy Grail quest for many...proper spacing on a tricompax layout. There is a newer movement with the tighter spacing that has only been released with the PO Chrono and the Omega Double Eagle Constellation...no Moon Watch version unfortunately.

The Sea Gull is still a wide format spacing so inaccurate. The display back (though inaccurate) does show a beautiful watch movement. ;)

There has been a big desire in the community for the factories to release a more accurately spaced Speedy with the new compact layout...but it hasn't happened yet. So...until then...who knows.

You could try sourcing a replacement tightly-spaced movement from the dealers, a quartz version of the watch and see if you could make a hybrid...but you would likely want the better case and bracelet...and would need new hands maybe...hmmm...

  9. :wub: Lucky you :wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub:

I was just thinking the same thing!!

Today is my IWC spitfire. I put a black croc strap on instead of the bracelet that came with it. I think it gives it a more elegant look to the watch.

I agree...this thing is beautiful on croc!

  10. yup, the gen feels different emotionally. i have three gen Omegas and a one rep Omega. It just feels different.

It's funny. I was thinking that for heirloom purposes or marking significant events nothing beats a gen. THEN...I'm sitting surfing for pocket watch movements and thinking of embarking on a franken-project and the wife sees the history of the movement I'm thinking of using, and the craft behind the project and is thinking this even with rep parts, would make a truly interesting heirloom type of piece because of the labour involved and the story of the quest for building...so reps, in some forms with projects, can even have as much if not more emotional significance than a gen.

I know there are a few other stories like this with franken-tona's and what not...

I have emotionally significant gens...and nothing can replace those...but now, there are emotionally significant reps and those too can feel different.
