  1. Hey omgiv...great to see a post like this get self-service answers. I'm thinking you've got a fair bit to share in terms of knowledge. I see you've been on the forum awhile...feel free to post the progress of your project!!

  2. Understood, that would explain why it's broken, with that many mods to any movement, it's a time bomb...

Yeah...I'm trying to find out some info on this movement. This is actually the first post on this that I've seen somebody have problems on it. I'm thinking it might be a movement I remember seeing in one of my catalogues that was modded in the same way as the other ones...stay tuned...I'll keep you posted.

  3. ...I am also hesitant to believe that I have a genuine Eta 2824 movement and instead I think it might be a low quality seagul movement. If I post pictures of the movement through the caseback would anyone be able to identify it?

The main issue is if you requested and paid for Swiss...what you get. It's hard to say off the pic you sent. If you get one with the rotor in various positions...you need to see some of the other gears to be able to tell which movement it is. From the view you sent and without the super sharpness of a macro lens, it could be either the ETA or Seagull 2836.

Check out Zig's post on the teardown of my Seagull movement I sent him.

Great piece either way. The Sea gull movement is not necessarily bad...just could benefit from service sooner rather than later...Zig's post will explain all!!

    Congrats.

  4. Hey Zig...this one is a tricky one as it is the Ulysse Nardin with the running seconds at 6, power reserve at 12 and date at 6. I'm trying to find the source for the original asian replacement movement. Of course the decorated rotor would have to be replaced...so I don't think because of the complications, that the 8215 will work.

This is why I haven't bought one of these UN's yet. :(

  5. ...being warped like most of you guys, i immediately think of Hike and toasting up a dial...i pm our friendly Toastmeister with an appeal for more detail on the process...a handful of minutes later, my phone rings...it's the Lord of Toasting himself...an odd glance comes from my wife, as we discuss the intracacies of toasting dials...excited and confident, i don the bbq apron, my goggles, and oven mit...an hour later, i have a burnt orange dial (pun intended)...and a house that smells of molten plastic...my wife thinks i'm crazy...my kids know!...

wonder what would happen if i microwave a timex?!...

That's hilarious R...neat result too. You have me thinking buddy...hmmmm...

  6. Avitt's DLC Solution to the High Friction

    Powdered Graphite Treatment

For DLC pricing, you'll have to contact Avitt directly as you'll likely need some watchmaker services to remove the modification plate before coating and whether or note he does the disassembly or not will likely affect the service fee (plus shipping of course).

There was a post somewhere I think by Freddy333 (but I couldn't find it) on him recently getting back a Daytona with the seconds-at-6 movement that had the graphite treatment done a couple years ago or so, and it was still running fine.

  7. Very good write-up. I write-ieups like this are as important if not more so than the write-ups from the experts and professionals, as your experience is the one that most people would be entering in from.

It's very important and useful to have experts write-up how things should be done, but equally important to document the experience of somebody new to this kind of work, as the issues are quite different, and the things some folks take for granted (e.g. oil choice) are not things to be overlooked if you're new to the process and experience.

    Great contribution!!

  8. Panarai by far, I mean I think they are a ok looking watch, but they all look the same!

I thought the same thing until I got HackR's 239...and now I wear that thing all the time. Granted, having many of them is not something I completely understand. I guess I understand an overall design aesthetic, but not being a true collector in a particular brand, am not fascinated by all the minutiae of the variations.

Then I've been re-reading Zig's threads on Fiddy's with pocket watch movements and this is really intriguing me...as this is something that can be heirloom quality...not necessarily crazy expensive...but interesting with a story, and unique.

Like HackR said, it is fun to try things out as they look so different in real life than they do in full blown macro photography colour on a 24" monitor.

HBBs I used to loathe because they seemed too much like over-detailed clunky paperweights...but when you see them in person, some of them are quite interesting. Again...1 would be a good addition to a collection...but 10 of them?? They do wear well.

I don't really understand the obsession with AP ROO variations. Same watch in 40 different colour combinations? That's not my thing...and given the gen price? hmmm....but as a representative sample in a collection, I can see one of the RB II's...

I've never been into the Patek Nautilus' either...

I guess I understand and appreciate most aesthetics...but can't get into as much the multiple variations.

  9. Glad you were able to try it. I was wondering what the result would be...sorry it didn't work out.

There was an interesting post today about freezing the running seconds on an A21j movement by Ronin. The title of the post is:

"A Reliable Seconds @ 6 Movement? Tinkering with potential Daytona Mvmt"

  10. If the gen datewheel fits, you can find hands that fit as well, and the date window on the dial lines up with the datewheel properly...dial feet are the least of your worries. Cut them off and use dial dots if you run into problems.

BTW...welcome to the forum...the best watch place around. Hopefully one of the more knowledgeable watchmakers will reply as to the specific other fit issues for this movement.
