TeeJay
From what I understand, DLC is PVD's harder and more durable big brother
Guest avitt
I'd like to see the serial number for that piece...There's a good chance that I coated it! Here's a good reference site on DLC: http://www.magrette.com/information-dlc-coating.php
rosnik
Thank you AviTT. I sow you reference DLC/PVd tread too: To get DLC/PVD on a bracelet like the oyster, do you have to totally dismount it?
Guest avitt
To get DLC/PVD on a bracelet like the oyster, do you have to totally dismount it? When I coat bracelets, I just disassemble them into the major parts (clasp, clasp cover, end links, etc). I don't actually take all of the links apart, because this would make the process prohibitively expensive. DLC does a great job of covering the visible areas in between the links. plaifender
i've always been curious as to what the process looks like.. I imagine Avitt with this huge, noisy, vaporizer, pvd applicator contraption in his basement or gaarage.. and besides coating watches he's up all night coating everything metal in his home... Seriously... is that what it's like!??
Guest avitt
You've got it, Plaifender! This is my garage: ...LOL! No, actually i just do the case work and bead blasting in my garage. For the DLC or PVD coating, I am buying surplus chamber space from a commercial coating center.

rosnik
Avitt, is it real that PVD coating is reversible to origin. DLC is not reversible?
Guest avitt
DLC does create a permanent bond to the substrate metal (stainless, titanium, etc). I can strip it off, using special blasting media...But this leaves the piece with a matte finish. I have not yet tried chemical stripping of DLC, but plan to soon.
