Hmmmm... That's a good question. Usually, the dial holds the hour pinion down with some pressure from the washer spring that sits between the dial and hour wheel. I suppose it would be possible for the minute hand to hold the hour pinion on. Dunno what, if any, detrimental impact it would have on the pinion or minute hand. seems it would work to me?

About two years ago someone posted a link to examples of student work from the only watch engraving school on earth or somethingm like that--all were 6497's and some were very contemporary and cool---anyone bookmark that link?
