Usually, the dial holds the hour pinion down with some pressure from the washer spring that sits between the dial and hour wheel. I suppose it would be possible for the minute hand to hold the hour pinion on. Dunno what, if any, detrimental impact it would have on the pinion or minute hand. seems it would work to me?
