diverguy
I'm new to the forum, but so far I love it. I have a rep Yachtmaster, and it is a fantastic rep aside from the lume, it will glow for a few minutes if you hold it under a light for awhile, but with regular wear, it stays as dark as the night. Not a huge issue imo, but I am now experiencing an issue and want to know if anyone else has seen is with this watch. The watch will stop keeping time when the crown is screwed down. As long as I keep the crown unscrewed, this thing is almost perfect, off by maybe 3 seconds a day and only needs winding if I dont' wear it for more than 24 hours. As soon as I screw down the crown, about 20 minutes later the hands stop, until i shake it up and then it goes for another couple minutes, then stops. If I unscrew the crown, it is back to ticking again. Any ideas? I have 2 watchmakers in town that will happily work on reps, but I don't want to spend 100 dollars getting it fixed, when I could spend 100 on a new watch (and I am dying for a black SS submariner). On that note, aside from my YM problems, if I get a $80-100 SS submariner, what am I sacrificing besides a better movement? My YM has a cheap asian 21j movement that keeps amazing time, and has for about a year now. So I don't mind the cheaper movement. But is there anything else that I should be aware of that people would spot as fake from a mile away on the lower priced models? Guest VINTAGE1680
sounds like your movement needs service. maybe the balance wheel its broken or something like that edit. if the movement stays up while the crown is unscrewed. the stem is to long Edited July 9, 2010 by VINTAGE1680
diverguy
I thought it might have something to do with the stem. I'm not familiar enough with the internal workings of a watch movement, but I'd hate to pay 100 dollars to have the watchmaker hack off a small piece from the end of the stem and have it work perfectly. Like I said, I'd rather just wear it unscrewed, most people don't notice anyway. One person (the cashier at a supermarket, wearing a submariner) looked at it and let me know I forgot to screw down the crown. I thanked him for noticing, screwed it down, and then unscrewed it about 45 seconds later so it would keep time lol.

diverguy
I'll have to talk to the watchmaker and see if she thinks that will fix the problem, and hopefully do it for less money. But on the other note, I've never purchased a rep online, and I'd like to start doing that but I hear so much about scammers and people ordering a watch for 200 dollars and getting a crappy quartz rep in the mail, etc. What are some sites that are absolutely fantastic? I know the watch I am looking to buy is one of the most common ones out there, so it shouldn't be hard to find a quality one for a fair price, but I want to make sure I'm getting the same watch I am ordering and reading about, and not a poor quality canal street watch. RobbieG
Supermarket cashier with a Submariner huh? Maybe you should take a closer look at his watch the next time you are in there. He may just be a member here...
diverguy
haha... I said the same thing, but he was an older gentleman that seemed to be retired and just working there to get away from the ol' ball and chain for a few hours a day. And beside that, in South Florida it is not at all uncommon for people to buy a watch in lieu of paying their mortgage for a year. If anyone can recommend a good model submariner in the 100 dollar range from a reputable site, I think I'm going to order one this week, but I'd love some input from people that have actually held these watches in their hand and gotten a good look at them. Jkay
There are two real choices for modern Submariners ... the best inexpensive Sub (the NoobMariner) and the best expensive Sub (the WM9 factory Submariner in either LV or regular black). I'm not exaggerating here .. if you want "the best modern Sub" then you want either a Noob or a WM9 ... end of story. Both are excellent. One is almost perfect. Hence the price difference. There's a member here in the US who mods stock Noobmariners to improve the look and reliability. Look here .. stock Noobs are between 90 and 300 USD depending on where you buy and what movement you want inside of it. Modded watches are more. As for the WM9 watches, talk to blkm123 here on this forum. He's the USA merchant for WM9 factory. Look to spend $600++
