ratpatrolteam01
I am thinking of buying an ETA 2824 Movement. Are they really Swiss ETA? A user profile in ebay says it's sending from Switzerland, but that might not mean anything. there is also wholesale990 in ebay, and ofrei.com I have a Clone ETA 2824, and I might pick up one of these just in case it craps out in the future. (BTW what's the difference between the clones and the "genuine/swiss" ETAs?, accuracy, reliability, ??) Thank you Edited December 5, 2010 by ratpatrolteam01
Jkay
You have to take this on a case by case basis. No one can tell you if ALL ETA movements sold on ebay are genuine. I have purchased 2824s from Wholesale990 and yes, they are genuine. The difference between clone and genuine ETA is quality control. Clone movements are not oiled and not clean. Genuine ETA movements are. Chinese clones are so good that you need a magnifying loupe to discover them. But they are dry and dirty inside and should be cleaned! OmegaPOFL
unless you know what to look for, it can get difficult. i suggest just buying it from ofrei or from someone reputable. most of the time eta's can be found in used watches on ebay... and most likely in need of a service
PeteM
I dont think the advice can get better than that mate Buy the seller not the item
FxrAndy
ETA used to make movements in asia so it may still be an ETA but maide in asia, that should be the same as a swiss one as it is all the same firm with the same quality control, but when buying any movement on the bay, or from any where for that matter the questions should be, Is it new? How long has it sat on a shelf for? Is it a standard movement? I have bought movements on the bay (cheep) but they needed a service and in one case it came with the shortest canon pin, seconds wheel and hour wheel i have ever seen! ratpatrolteam01
oh ok thanks guys. because i have a rep with an eta 2824 clone movement, and I just got it serviced + regulated by the member here. He said it looks clean, and it has been serviced prior to him. I was just wondering if the metals are weaker/likely to break from stripped gears or something compared to the "genuine" ETAs. Once it's been cleaned and regulated, you should be good for 5 years or so. I wouldn't worry about the metals, etc. Just enjoy your watch.
