asf Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Not that it's anyhelp, but the vintage pieces have a bi directional bezel
freddy333 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 There are a number of aftermarket case suppliers, all of which are considerably more costly than MBWs or standard reps. Try Yuki, NDt or J&W. For reference, other than the lug/caseback numbering, the 5512/5513/5514 & 1680 cases are the same (interchangeable).

woof* Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 I didn't know that about the cases ..thanks Freddy!
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Thanks for all the responses.. Ubi.. What's the cheapest/cost effective case to use.. I'm trying to keep the project under a grand
ubiquitous Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 If you use an actual 1680 case from Phong, NDT or Yuki, a 5512 dial is going to be too small. The only exception would be the MBW '1680' case which is actually just a renumbered 5513 case (for example, a genuine 1680 dial in an MBW '1680 case won't fit as the dial will be too big). jsuperman- I think a MBW case is going to be the best best for your project. Relatively low cost and definitely one of the better quality cases out there. The bezel rotation/play will vary among watches; even one MBW to another. This is adjusted by giving the bezel washer a slight bend. Hope this helps. Cheers, //ubi
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Ok ubi.. So other mbw watches that will be appropiate for 5512 project are any 1680's?
ubiquitous Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Yeah- Essentially the MBW 5513 and 1680 are the same case. Just a different ref between the lugs. But physically, those two are the same. Not so good for a 1680 project, but very usable for a 5512/5513 and with mods a 5514 and 5517.
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Ok so I guess ill hunt for a mbw 5512/5513 or a mbw 1680 ok the next issue is the crown and tube.. Which one should I go for?
Robaer Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Get a gen crown with an aftermarket tube. You will have to drill the case and retap the hole to accept the new tube. A bit of work but a great difference.
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 I guess a clark tube and gen 703 crown?

I think you may be giving up to soon. The 5512 from josh (same as trusty by the sounds of it) is a very nice watch. I agree the crown guards are a little short, but with a smaller crown and some work to the outside of the CG's, I have seen some miracles performed. I have a 1680 and 5512 on the way from Josh and that's the first thing I will be doing. Also the crown is huge, making it look twice as bad. You've got the watch now, may as well mod it, see how it goes. Kind regards, Marc.
Dizzy Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 If you want to build a 5512, then why not just start with an MBW5512 If you do a search you will find a thread about a new MBW5512 thats modded. It was a couple months ago.
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Yeah I saw gileto's mbw 5512.. Absolutely gorgeous.. I like the white dial markers its a cleaner look... I want a watch that I can really wear and not worry about where my left wrist flies into lol who can I ask to get me a mbw?
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 is this a good candidate for a 5512? it suppose to have a gen crystal, crown and tube...
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Come on guys... Is this the same as a mbw 5512??
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Thanks gileto... Or you can sell me yours
freddy333 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 The 'POLEX' cases are MBW-level, which means they accept many gen parts (crown, tube, crystal, movement (possibly, with a bit of Dremel-nudging )).
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Thanks freddy! I've been wanting an answer! So you think I can convert it to a 5512? It would be the correct case right?
ubiquitous Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Any MBW 5513/1680 case would work for a 5512, as long as it's MBW. Remember, the MBW 1680 case is basically a 5513 case re-ref'd.
Guest jsuperman17 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Thanks ubi.. Is the one I pictured a mbw case?
ubiquitous Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Looks like one to me (it's had it's CG's modded).
