rkdk Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 looks really insane. but wonder if they get the 3d effect of gen carbon right
Mickey Padge Posted July 30, 2011 Author Report Posted July 30, 2011 looks really insane. but wonder if they get the 3d effect of gen carbon right Indeed, need a video of the gen too really
sempire Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 The carbon looks like crap on the reps though. Carbon fiber is much harder to mold than steel and ceramic and is way more expensive. I can't see this being real 100% carbon fiber through and through.

Carbon fiber is much harder to mold than steel and ceramic and is way more expensive. I can't see this being real 100% carbon fiber through and through. Not really true, I am riding a carbon fibre mountain bike that I built, multiple carbon parts and the frame cost about $500 shipped from a wholesaler, can't see why a tiny, tiny carbon watch case would be crazy expensive or difficult to make
sempire Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 Most of my motorcycle is carbon fiber and i'm sure it's a lot cheaper to build big parts, flat parts, tubes, etc. Carbon fiber is made from layers of carbon fiber material and not pouring a melted liquid into a mold and waiting for it to harden. Its just such an intricate piece to make. Usually for cheap things they make it in steel and wrap it in a thin layer of carbon fiber. Something like a bike frame is much easier to make in carbon fiber than something like a watch case. We'll definitely have to wait and see.
Mickey Padge Posted July 30, 2011 Author Report Posted July 30, 2011 I thought you just needed resin, carbon, a male/female mould and could then use the vacuum/pressure bag method? It doesn't sound that expensive or elaborate to me
cdigi Posted July 30, 2011 Report Posted July 30, 2011 I saw that on Josh's site last night and could not believe my eyes! Looks like a winner. Love the gummy crock strap.
Mickey Padge Posted July 31, 2011 Author Report Posted July 31, 2011 It does look cool, I wonder if a carbon AP is far away?
cdigi Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 It does look cool, I wonder if a carbon AP is far away? I'm take a wild guess that this carbon is wrapped around a steel case, I doubt it's molded carbon. The AP Alinghi uses forged carbon, and entirely different process that rep makers won't spend the time or $$$$$ to duplicate. It has a different look to it as well.
Mickey Padge Posted July 31, 2011 Author Report Posted July 31, 2011 Description and price are up, says full carbon case, price $438....
Dani Posted July 31, 2011 Report Posted July 31, 2011 Mickey@ You gone get it? Price seems fair consider its all carbon, but It do have some glaring flaws.
Mickey Padge Posted August 1, 2011 Author Report Posted August 1, 2011 Not sure if I'll get one, would have to sell a rep first really. Need some decent pictures first too, I hope puretime updates his website soon!
sul Posted August 2, 2011 Report Posted August 2, 2011 (edited) 435 usd. gen: carbon case upper layer is satin, what about rep, it is probably shine ?: Edited August 2, 2011 by sul
Mickey Padge Posted August 2, 2011 Author Report Posted August 2, 2011 Yep, the case seems glossy with the rep, shame they missed this vital detail on the case finishing!
