AsiadeCuba
So i was checking this beauty out one day... my dilemma is that i want to trade my gen PO for it. i have three gen omegas and a gen rolex gmt iic. i was naive to think that it could be used a daily beater. well now i have my sites on a "vintage" rollie. i have a this mbw 5512 with gen t19, relumed, gen spring bars, gen crown/tube. the usual suspects. but it was cutting it out for me. the only reason i got it was, i'm a bit of a steve mcqueen fan. And i saw him wearing one in a photo and started my vintage rage. He's asking $4175 obro or $3675 for the head only. He said it's running 15 seconds slow a day, which means it needs a service right? i should factor this in with the cost. How much is my PO 42mm with boxes/papers on a ss bracelet. i feel his price is a bit much. Should i ask him to lower his price? is a 16800 a good transition model? ubiquitous
For a 16800, matte dial is definitely where it's at. Case is a bit rough... But the dial is nice. Wouldn't be bad for a beater. It's got the charm of a matte vintage, but the durability of a sapphire Sub. Kind of the best of both worlds with these transitional pieces
AsiadeCuba
thanks for commenting ubi. is the case being rough a problem? can it be polished out? will it definitely need a service?
ubiquitous
Well, the case profile shows some nicks and dings, some of which look a bit deep. It would take a bit of polishing to take those down; I would advise against, as it would decrease value and a poorly executed polish job is worse than leaving the wear and tear in place. The case as-is looks like it's been polished once before (albeit lightly)... Otherwise, the lug tops, bezel, and crystal all look good.

ubiquitous
Well... I think a service will run $200 - $400 depending on who you get to service; price may go up if replacement parts are needed (though if it's just running a consistent 15 secs slow, I bet it just needs an overhaul, fresh oils and regulation). I have noticed some of these matte dial 16800s starting to creep up in price, but the usual median seems to be (realistically) right around $4800 or so in my opinion. I see several listed for $6k - $8k, but the fact that they've been on the market for as long as they have is evidence to me that they're priced too high. I think the better piece for collecting purposes would be the 16660 matte, but those are definitely at a higher buy in. Speaking on this piece specifically... That's a tough call. The dial is quite nice. Definitely good shape and usually the first thing to take into account when considering a vintage Rolex. However, the case is also an important aspect; given the condition of this one, it's a bit rough. Personally, I'd say wait and be patient... 16800s are still out there, and usually for not much more than the one being offered in your post. It's always a tough call when it comes to this kind of stuff, because you might be waiting a long time before you find the piece you're really after in terms of condition, price, etc. Or, it could be tomorrow. But if there's any doubt... I'd say pass.
alligoat
A year or two ago you could pick up matte dial 16800's for less than $4k. Maybe not anymore. Here's one in a pawnshop in Washington which has a better case http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1981-Rolex-SS-Gents-Submariner-16800-/280730821997?pt=Wristwatches&hash=item415cdc656d Can't tell about the dial w/ a description of 'scuffs', but it looks ok from the pics- which aren't great. But you don't know where the bidding will end up, or it might not go anywhere.
wiesn089
I love 16800s, actually I'm looking at matte dialed versions at the moment myself. But I agree with Ubi, this case is in really rough condition, I wouldn't go for that one. Here matte 16800 with B/P are somewhere around 4.500€+. Does anyone know why on 16800s the tritium in the pearl tends to age far more than the dial plots?

AsiadeCuba
thanks guys. the nice this about this is this guy is willing to trade. also, on the base being a bit rough, that can be touched up no? to top thing off there are chips in the crystal on the edges. i am going to try to work him down to 3k for the head. alligoat
Does anyone know why on 16800s the tritium in the pearl tends to age far more than the dial plots? My guess is that the pearl is exposed more to salt water, etc. whereas the dial/case is sealed.
