So what is the smallest movement that has ever been made?

Type 101 movements?

I feel for the people that put them together! I suppose if you've *very* short sighted with very steady hands it'd be a good dayjob.

Not quite as small, still a cool use for these tiny movements. Given the popularity of larger and larger watches, these tiny movements probably don't see much production anymore.

World's thinnest movement, 2.35mm:

The 1208P movement, is a direct descendant of the famous 12P movement, and is the thinnest automatic mechanical movement in the world. To set this record at 2.35 mm required all of Piaget's expertise in ultra-thin movements and refined components. For example, some of the gears in the 1208P movement measure no more than 0,12 mm and are hardly thicker than a human hair. The space between the wheels has been reduced to its minimum of only 0.1 mm. The movement is fitted with a balance stop. In order to make the best use of space, the rose gold micro-rotor decorated with the Piaget coat-of-arms, is off-center and positioned at 9 o'clock. The movement is fitted with a small seconds which is also off-center and located at 5 o'clock on the dial. As part of the watchmaker Piaget's constant effort to differentiate its models, it has decorated the 1208P movement wheels with a sunburst motif and a dedicated index assembly carries the stylized "P" of Piaget like a secret signature. Circular Côtes de Genève, a circular-grained mainplate, beveled bridges and blued screws add the finishing touches to this movement, and are reminders of the Swiss watchmaking brand's high aesthetic values.

Check out the Piaget web site for some amazing movements including the thinnest tourbillon, thinnest moon  phase and several more.
