omegap7 Posted May 16, 2014 Report Posted May 16, 2014 hey there, looking to start a 5508 build anyone have any tips on who makes the best case? also who has the best hands? much thanks!!!
Nanuq Posted May 16, 2014 Report Posted May 16, 2014 I've never seen an even remotely accurate Small Crown case. They're all too large in diameter and far too thick. What you really need to do is embark on a 6538 / 5510 build and buy my dial.
alligoat Posted May 16, 2014 Report Posted May 16, 2014 Back in 08 I built a 5508 using an NDT case and dial. The lugs are a little thick and need to be slimmed down. But the 1520 Rolex movement fit in there just fine. A 1530 would have been correct but I never swapped out movements- they are the same size, 18,000 bph vs 19800 on the newer 1520. you could also look at Yuki- he has a 5508- used to be cheaper than NDT. http://www.yukiwatch.com/catalog/item/6924997/7464494.htm Otherwise, you're on to Phong and it will cost you more
DC109 Posted May 16, 2014 Report Posted May 16, 2014 Or MQ. I think his prices are closer to NDT than to Phong, but Nanuq should know for sure--I believe the case that sweet dial used to live in is MQ, right Nanuq?
Nanuq Posted May 16, 2014 Report Posted May 16, 2014 You bet, it's a MQ case and it's spectacular (and expensive)!
omegap7 Posted May 17, 2014 Author Report Posted May 17, 2014 who's MQ? Ive heard of Sean, whats his website? Any good?

DC109 Posted May 17, 2014 Report Posted May 17, 2014 Nanuq, did you get the 6538 or the 5510 for the Big Gonzo? From MQ's pics I always thought it was the opposite of Yuki--5510 looks wokky, and 6538 looks right.
Nanuq Posted May 18, 2014 Report Posted May 18, 2014 Yep, I did the 6538 ... it's dead-nuts-accurate for dimensions to the gen.
