Nanuq
Here in Alaska we have an event called the Valdez Fly-In where the goal is to make the shortest landing possible, and then take off in the shortest distance. You have to stick it between the cones. This is the best short landing I've ever seen. http://m.liveleak.com/view?i=5d3_1468355217
Sogeha
Awesome. I love GA 'planes on tundra wheels, they always look like cartoons. I guess tundra wheels are normal in Alaska.
Nanuq
Yep! If you're going out in the bush you gotta have them. The gnarlier the terrain, the bigger the tires. This would be my ultimate toy.
Sogeha
Got to love a radial. When I stop working twelve hour days I hope to build a fly baby or pietenpol. I love retro open cockpit 'planes, but they don't suit your climate. My dream would be one these, which would be absolutely useless to you. My home in Poland is up a mountain less than 1/4 mile from the local flying club and my parent's place is about five miles from another.
imajedi
He's landing in a 60mph head wind. That doesn't count.
Nanuq
Sure it does. Anything goes at the Fly-In. Check out those cheater STOL flaps and ultralight body... that plane gets used for one purpose. BTW that's probably more like a 30mph wind. Lots of planes here (like the Helio Courier) can fly and maneuver at 30mph, unimproved. The winner at last year's Fly-In had a 20 foot landing and a 24 foot takeoff, for a combined win at 44 feet, with a 14 knot wind. Here's the winner from this year.
Nanuq
@Sogeha, that's a beauty. This is where I'd spend all my spare time if I had a Beaver on skis.
imajedi
Next year someone will enter a chopper.
Sogeha
Landing into the wind isn't cheating, it's standard practice in aviation. Even in a specialist 'plane with a Vne below the Vstall of many craft it still takes real skill to put one down like that. Just dropping the wheels onto the chalk line is much harder than these guys make it look. I doubt one in a hundred PPL pilots could consistently get within ten foot. Skill makes anything look easy, there is a reason it's a competition. The only way I could beat that would be to kill the engine and pull the ballistic 'chute
Nanuq
Did you hear them commenting on the video about the chalk on his tires? That's crazy skill. The only way I could personally beat his performance is if I was pointing straight down.
