My wife uses ours a lot and wants pocket size for ease of carrying, I on the other hand want a good specification. After doing some research I have just about decided to go for a Panasonic DMC FX01 or FX07, the other shortlister is the Sony DSC W 50 or 100. All of these choices are available in the UK for under £200. Does anybody use any of these models and are any pics on this forum taken with them? Thanks guys, any comments appreciated. I use a Panasonic FZ20 and find it all I need (until I go SLR) but I've used a friends FX07 for a few non-watch shoots. It's good, but only in medium to high light. fotoman Posted January 7, 2007 Report Share Posted January 7, 2007 i differ from pugs and highly recomend Canon - if you want to stay around 200 (EDIT ment 200 bucks not 100) bucks - check out the deals on the DS700IS i have it, it rocks its been my research and experience that pound for pound canon has thebest cameras in the sub 500$ market. pugs likes panasonic i have never used them so i can't attest good luck Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

qwert750 Posted January 8, 2007 Report Share Posted January 8, 2007 I didn't look up the specs on the models you posted, but when looking for a small digital camera, I would be sure to get one that has a traditional viewfinder in addition to the LCD. My Sony DSC-N1 has a very nice 3" LCD but no traditional viewfinder - taking pictures indoors without very good lighting is quite a challenge, as the LCD is too dark to make out what you're shooting. I just picked up a DSLR (Nikon D50) because I've tired of this and the shutter lag when trying to capture moments of the kids (plus I already had a couple Nikon lenses from my dust-gathering film SLR). Good luck in your search - there's a lot of great stuff out there for very little money. Canon point and shoots tend to receive a lot of favorable press from my understanding... I was considering Panasonic for their image stabilization, but once I started shooting and found the noise issues they have with their CCD I quickly moved on to Fuji. For lower lighting conditions, the Fuji F20 and F30 are both incredible camera. Fuji has an incredible CCD that can process ISO 800 pictures at the same quality my Canon SD processes 400. I opted away from both of those though, for one simple reason; feel of use. I went to CC, BB, WM, tons of B&M stores and tried out what I liked. I quickly fell in love with Canon again (my ex's camera was a SD 400 I believe). The response, feel, look, and performance of Canon for a pns camera is UNMATCHED. I also considered Sony's W and T lines. The W30, W50, W70 as well as the T10 were all serious considerations. After all, the Canon SD700IS took it for me. I paid $280 shipped (US Dollars, not sure what it is in pounds, but should be lower than 200). This is the flagship model released in 2006 for Canon, and one of the BEST performers rated by anyone. Is it the initial PnS available with Image Stabilization, and I tell you 100% I will never own another camera without this. No matter what type of picture I am taking, the IS is incredible. I take a lot of lower lighting and tripod pictures, mostly of automobiles friends and I own. I also take a lot of macro shots (guess of what and this is also one of the nicest focusing and responding cameras I have ever felt. Couple the incredible performance with Canons lens and CCD and this is a great piece. The only thing it lacks is ISO over 800, which honestly isn't that big of a deal for me. The SD800IS is also available if you want a 7mp camera; however this model moves up to the 28mm wideangle lens constructed of plastic (creates softened corners) lens instead of the tradition crystal clear glass offered in the SD700. My biggest pet peeve is a camera that delays when trying to focus, has a long lag time between shot processing, or a lackluster CCD. This Canon, with its Digic II processor, IS, and incredible start up and pic to pic speed is all incredible (see dpreview reviews as well as comparative specs against the other models you are considering). Form is also a consideration for me, which also deterred me from the Fuji and Panasonic line. The only feature that I would have liked to have seen in the camera is a manual aperature mode. In the price range you're shopping, the Fuji F30 is the other contender that offers this, while the F20 doesn't. Other than that, this camera has every feature one could ask for in a PnS. For anyone, I would highly recommend the SD700. I've had it less than 2 weeks, and these are highly compressed with no post processing done whatsoever.
