ahchard Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 Came across a vintage Explorere 1016 for sale. Owner says it is from the early 60's. Are these sought after at all? It has a riveted bracelet which obviously isn't the original bracelet with the watch, but would be interesting to put on to a vintage 1680 or 1665! What would it be worth??
stilty Posted December 18, 2007 Report Posted December 18, 2007 Did your seller name a price? they are a collectable watch priced anywhere from 5K to 8K.
ahchard Posted December 18, 2007 Author Report Posted December 18, 2007 nope. no price yet. I will try to find out and do some negotiating.
dieselpower Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 They are very collectable. I know a man in the UK who collects nothing but 1016's!
Guest Bluey Posted December 20, 2007 Report Posted December 20, 2007 Get some pix man these are beauties! Also I think the riveted strap was an option so may be genuine. b
ahchard Posted December 22, 2007 Author Report Posted December 22, 2007 This thread dropped so far down I forgot about it. Here is one pic showing the riveted bracelet, endlinks and back of watch. I will post some of the dial soon.
ahchard Posted December 23, 2007 Author Report Posted December 23, 2007 Ok... here are the photos... the hands were changed by rolex when the watch was serviced...
Nanuq Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 Did Rolex certify that's a gen dial? I'm not real happy with the "O" in ROLEX. But daaaannnnnng that's a beauty. If it has "Tenzing Norgay" engraved on the back, don't pass it up!

ahchard Posted December 23, 2007 Author Report Posted December 23, 2007 Not sure if it is the angle or the photo. here is another photo.
ahchard Posted December 23, 2007 Author Report Posted December 23, 2007 Owner is asking USD5300 for this one... hmmm....
Nanuq Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 Man, I dunno. I've seen dials like that one with the funky coronet and then I've seen dials with a coronet more like you'd expect to see. Check this gilt dialed 1016 that sold for $5,600 (item 170175417723). That one has the dial I expect to see. Yours just bugs me somehow. And for only $300 less than you can get a gilt dialed 1016? I'd pass. Sorry.
ShawnBeever Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 Out of interest does the 1016 have the same 1.3mm lug holes as the 5513 etc.
stilty Posted December 25, 2007 Report Posted December 25, 2007 Yes, same lughole size. Isn't that for sale HERE? Nothing wrong with that coronet, there are a few variations out there, but that is correct for the 1964. Pitty the original hands couldn't have been saved.
ahchard Posted December 25, 2007 Author Report Posted December 25, 2007 oh... he must have listed it there as well... the guy is from nz and lives a few hours from me...
Guest Bluey Posted December 26, 2007 Report Posted December 26, 2007 I think that's a beautiful watch. I would ask to meet the guy with the watch at a Rolex AD and get them to verfiy. Gorgeous watch
