screwie
Hi all! I am quite new to this forum, only been lurking for like a week, but I already spent hours and hours on here reading a lot, lots of interesting and fun posts! I actually wasn't much of a watch enthusiast up till a short time ago. But a few weeks ago I ran into the Zenith website for some reason and saw their fabulous watches. I didn't know watches could look that good! No, here's not a question on whether there are Zenith reps out there I've read enough here to know there aren't any. Plus I would want a gen Zenith, I think they're worth it But while I'm enjoying the idea of buying a Zenith, I'd like to buy a new watch. I haven't worn any for the last 4-5 years... I've been looking around, and been through many infatuations already (ooh, I love the Big Bang, no, I love the Aquaracer, ohno I want a Breitling! etc) But now comes the serious stuff, what to really buy! :cc_confused: I thought about a watch which can be a daily beater and which I can wear to work (suit, many rich people around there, I'm sorta junior) So here's my short list: Omega Speedmaster DayDate White Breitling Chronomat Evolution SS White IWC Spitfire Pilot Chrono (either SpitFire Pilot Chrono SS White or White SpitFire SS Chronograph) (so all with white dials) What do you think is the best rep of those? Any good ones I forgot which fall in the same category? And what do you think about the strap, steel or rather leather? (I know it's a matter of taste, but I have no taste ) Also, I live in Switzerland... any worries about customs here? Well, I hope it's not too many questions at once thanks for your help already! Victoria
Hiya, Screwie, hope you enjoy your stay in the Forum. This is the newbie mantra, but all the info you ask is already available by reading the forum for hours, hitting Search, reading the sub-forums and what-not. This includes PMing in case you're stuck. Of the three watches you solicit opinions of: Omega Speedmaster DayDate White Breitling Chronomat Evolution SS White IWC Spitfire Pilot Chrono (either SpitFire Pilot Chrono SS White or White SpitFire SS Chronograph) Only: Seems professional enough for a suited environment, with as you say, rich people around. The IWC Spitfire Chrono might do, but it depends on your position (I personally think only techie people like Pugwash could get away with that). IMHO, not the BCE. It's too sporty. Once again, welcome to the forum, have a look around, and see what is out there. Like your Zenith enthusiasm, it'll take time to scope out all the combos, but rewarding! P.S.: Okay, I'll throw you a bone. This is the Speedy in white, from Andrew/Trustytime, who I suggest as the newbie go-to-dealer. http://www.trustytime88.com/index.php?main...53c3197050769e1
Toadtorrent
I actually think the Spitfire Chrono with the white face to be a very elegant watch and very suitable for a dress environment. On black strap it's very nice with darker suits and as a more formal piece (not like a Calatrava or anything like that), and on brown it looks great with lighter suits or as something a little more sporty. I see Omegas everywhere as a sporty watch, but dressy only because at $2-3,000 anything on your wrist can pass as dressy, and Bond wore his into Casinos in a tux, so hey...the standard has been set. I have never seen an IWC in a "casual" environment...only a dressy or dress casual environment, given things like the Spitfire Chrono in 42mm cost $5-$6,000 for the strap/bracelet plus applicable taxes. screwie
Thanks for the quick replies! I've been doing some research already, but there's just so much on here, and every time I go into a thread I end up in ten other threads at the same time and in the end I didn't know what I was looking for anymore I guess you're right on the Breitling, it's quite sporty. That IWC on the leather strap looks really elegant though... I want to be able to sort of "pull it off", not that clients or other people see me with the watch and wonder what the heck I have on my wrist (ie too expensive or just not fitting). This is the other one I had in mind: Leather straps look good... I'm going to try to find some pics of the Omega with leather straps (on the Omega site it just has it with Steel for some reason) On my Zenith enthusiasm, their watches are just works of art... Victoria
Welcome Daniel, what happened to our fair Joann? I hope Dave's rude boy sexist remarks didn't scare her off? I miss her.
screwie
Thanks for the warm welcome! I've been looking at some of the posts on Swiss customs, that's pretty scary... I guess it's to be expected though. Saw something funny though: through google I came on a page of the site of the swiss watch industry where they say something about piracy being wrong, it's supporting and financing organised crime etc etc and then I clicked on their home page and the first headline "Swatch Group Net Profit: One Billion!" Toadtorrent
Thanks for the quick replies! This is the other one I had in mind: I actually am not a big fan of this particular watch as it is only 39mm and does not have the anti-reflective sapphire crystal. You can get the same strap on the 3717-2 in my post above. I like the proportion of the narrower outer ring on the 3717-02 compared with the 3706-23 pictured in your post, and the "vertical" orientation of the 12-3-6-9 stick markers...but that's just me. The 3717-02 as it is the latest edition of the 42mm pilot case, also has the possibility of being water resistant out of the box...and has a water resistant design so it should be fixable even if it fails a pressure test. StormTooper4
Welcome to RWG, and a good first post. My 10 cents worth is IWC. Its different than the dare I say common garden Omega speedy, both sporty and dressy. I've got a black faced version and they really are a quality watch. Look forward to seeing which one you pick ST
screwie
Thanks for the info!! I hadn't realized that that IWC was so small and didn't have the same quality as the other one. And I agree, IWC is something a bit more "non-common" than Omega. The only problem is that a colleague has one as well (a gen). I guess the choice isn't easy... Found this pic of a member who has an Omega Speedmaster with a leather strap (toomuchgear). Not sure if I really like it (no offense meant ofcourse!!!) StormTooper4
I may be wrong. But I'm a thinkin TMG's speedmaster is the real deal hence the envious looks I'm giving it.

screwie
Thanks for the heads up Victoria! Very nice of you!! I like it a lot actually, seems perfect for work ... I'm definitely putting that high on my list now. It's really elegant, but still young and with a black leather strap it looks perfect! Another problem popped up though, I looked at b16a2's post on his HBB Black Magic... That one looks amazing!! I've already been in contact with Andrew about it actually. I'm afraid I'm going to buy two watches... I'm going on holiday soon though and I want to be sure I'm home when they arrive, so I'm going to order them after my holidays. As they say in German "Anticipation is the best joy" Here's the pic of his Black Magic
