My 5508 Finally Makes It Home

Unfortunately Nuq, the pic Alli posted is about as close as anyone is likely to ever see again... the original acrylic encapsulated radium pearls were mostly phased out, and even replaced on watches before they were sold due to increasing radiation awareness in the late 50's & early 60's... it is easier to find a certificate that the particular watch has been checked for radiation from the local AD, by the local (country) gov't assay office than it is to find this true "gem"...

Of course, if anyone ever comes across an old vial of radium paint... remember it goes IN the acrylic, not ON it...

Interesing! Most of the old 5508's that I see on the bay- or at least alot of them- don't even have a pearl in them. Lost long ago, I suspect. Kinda like the old story about the people who used to do the dial painting with radium- they'd lick their paint brush with their tongue to get a fine point- needless to say- they are long dead and gone.
