ez2cy Posted January 18, 2009 Report Share Posted January 18, 2009 Can someone please tell me what any watch maker is thinking when they make and advertise a watch that is water resistant to 300 meters? I am a DiveMaster and there is no way anyone is ever going to dive that deep. Just seems like such an oxymoron thing to do, make something that will never be tested at what they say it can do. Nor is there any logical reason to make a watch like this. Just curious. As a recreational diver you are certainly limited as to how deep you can go. But commercial/professional divers do go 300m. Of course it's not free diving and they don't take a 300m dive watch with them. They're in contact with the surface via radio and decompress in a chamber before they come to the surface- they don't even need a watch because they are closely monitored by the guys up top. A guy like brtelec over at RWI could certainly bring you up to date- he's a professional diver. Another thing to keep in mind is that 300m is in perfect conditions- any underwater activity is not perfect conditions. Additional forces are brought to bear by movement so really a 300m watch is only good for say 200m. Watch manufacturers don't recommend swimming or snorkling with anything less than a 100m watch. You can not physically dive to 300 meters. Yes commercial divers can dive deeper but you are correct, they do not need a watch on, nor would they have one on. Braile on a drive thru ATM I would assume it is because of production. They make all the machines for all places the same, cost savings. So.....we go back to the original question. There is absolutely no reason to make a watch or advertize one that is water resistant to 300 meters. Thanks for the replies though folks. Enjoyed reading them. P.S. keeter Posted January 22, 2009 Report Share Posted January 22, 2009 (edited) Because people get excited about the possibilities of higher, stronger, faster, deeper... whether it is in the world of luxury watches, automobiles, aircraft or even japanese porn. As a diver myself, I can attest to the fact that there is little need for recreational divers to go below 50m. Technical diving commands more advanced setups, though 300m would be pushing it. In any case, the (% of population that needs to go below 100meters) multiplied by (% population that feels the need to maintain wrist fashion while having to gauge depth and potential hazards from all three dimensions) is a low number.
