Is it really that strange to ask if a watch is within COSC specs?

I wanted to close a deal on a watch through interwatches (gen).

Since the watch (Rolex) has no papers I asked if it was serviced or if they would be willing to ship it directly to Rolex Geneva where I could pick it up. The feedback was that services was not required since all watches have been serviced.

So I agreed ot the deal in case the following conditions where met:

My conditions:

I agree to the deal when:

* The serial has been checked with Rolex, and the serial is not listed as stolen

* The watch has been serviced and is running within CSOC standards or Rolex specs.

* The watch has no damages, other then normal hairline scratches, which are not visible in the pictures

This was the feedback:

After testing the watch throughout the weekend, we came to the conclusion that it is not performing in accordance with CSOC standards and we understand that this may not fulfill your expectations.

In order to find a watch that will comply with your needs and requirements, we recommend you to buy a Brand New Watch directly from Rolex .

I have now asked to sent me the test results, which I will sent some of the guru's here for feedback.

But was I really that rude to ask to confirm that the watch would be running within specs after service?

No...I don't think that's rude... I personally just would have asked for the results of a timing test but COSC is even more specific and thus, a better determinant for you.... At least they tested it and responded vs just saying "you're rude-it's not for sale"

The COSC thing is one of those things that pisses me off when I see people, especially on here, refer to their watch as running within COSC specs. The COSC specs state more than just the plus four minus six or plus six minus four whatever the hell it is range, they also specify temperature differences and case rotation, things we really can not test ourselves. And yet people still talk about how their watch is within COSC because they let it sit on the nightstand and it runs fine.

I think their response was acceptable, COSC specs in addition to being insanely specific is also an added cost.

Interwatch is not an authorized Rolex dealer. Regardless of the test results you were sent the minute that thing would have ticked out of the range you would be emailing them demending they service the watch. This is a simple matter of them avoiding trouble waiting to happen. And since you clearly stated that you would only buy it if it were within specs you gave them an out which is go to a Rolex dealer who are the only ones that will guarantee those specs.

And Fidestro you rock. ;)

you are missing the point; i was told it was serviced.

hence it should run within rolex or cosc specs, or at least close enough. (for a 2002 watch)

If it was not serviced I prefered to have it sent to Rolex directly.

I have no problem when they state to have no clue what the state of the movement is.

Then you know you take a gamble. If it was serviced or tested then they could simply state what the results where and that they do not provide a guarantee that it will remain running like that. No problem.

The easy way out would have been to say that they would recommend to have it sent to Rolex for service.

I would have had no problems with that.

Deal will now be completed after service.

And yes it is Fernando, his communication has been fast.

Ah, that's why they were rude.

I'd not sell to you. You don't sound like an easy customer. :)

Fidestro +1

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COSC

it is indeed a lot more than just the average aberation of a few seconds per day.

If a once COSC certified watch (and most modern Rolex are) is poperly serviced and adjusted by a trained professional, it should still meet the requirements. High quality workmanship gets your watch there and proper periodic servicing keeps it there.

They where not rude, reading is difficult I know am impatient myself .

I had the impression that they perceived my question was rude.

Have dealt with multiple members here, all deals where smooth and easy.

I am buying a gen rolex, through a professional watch dealer which seems to sell hundreds of watches per year.

If asking for specs and test results for an above 6k watch is being difficult then so be it.

I'd see nothing wrong with asking for clarity, again I did not ask them to provide guarantees for the future.

As it turned out I was right to ask since after testing they established the fact that it needed service and could not be sold.

Imho it is better to clear all issues before the deal then complain and whine later.
