New camera suggestions?

Recommended Posts

Ive been doing a ridiculous amount of research on cameras on the internet, and realized one of the main reasons i wanted one was to photograph my watch.

I have no idea what kind of specs are required to take such detailed, up close pics, though.

So Im gonna ask for help picking out a camera.

I'm either gonna go for a cheap point and shoot, or shell out twice as much for one with manual controls and hella zoom. I want one I can play around with some, but know very little about photography at this point still.

Here are my cohoices:

http://www.google.com/products?q=canon+sd890

http://www.google.com/products?q=canon+sd880

http://www.google.com/products?q=canon+sx110

What i really cant decide is if I will be happy with the cheapest one, or if I really should go for the one thats twice the price. I'm really strapped for cash right now or it would be a quick decision.....

Out of those cameras, none will do properly IMO. If you HAVE to for budget sake or ease of having one camera/one lens get either the SX110 posted or the better SX10IS

But....

Good Macro shots (close-ups of watches) are all about the lens more than the camera itself. For the best results get a DSLR like a Canon EOS XT or XTi or XSi and then get a good macro lens.

BE WARNED:

I wanted the same thing but to take pics of my car. Now, like other hobbies, I'm addicted, take lots of pics of objects, people, scenery etc. I want more lenses every day and you will too! Especially when your family starts saying hey, you have a nice camera, bring it to the birthday party/dinner/concert and take some!

DSLRs give the option of getting appropriate lenses for the situation. In fact, I just flew to see my dad for his birthday this weekend and my XTi and 3 lenses came with.

Good luck!

PS I took those pics in my sig with my macro/zoom lens and Xti

I would recommend the Canon Powershot G9 or G10. Good size, excellent picture quality both with auto mode and with manual settings. 12MP and 5x zoom with RAW mode is good enough for most needs. Its not to big to use on vacation etc you dont need a big camera bag for it.

I was looking alot myself just a couple of weeks ago since i dont know anything about taking photos myself. A good friend of mine who is a prof. photograf just told me to get either the G9 or G10 hands down. Im very happy with my used G9 i picked up for 300$

Happy hunting.

I was going to recommend the g9/g10 but the Sx10IS is a better camera for similar money...true, it is a bit bulkier though.

P&S are never going to do the job of DSLRs if you want to take proper pics.

Either way, let us know what you buy! Can't wait to see the new pics!

Hmmm Thanks for the suggestions. So will none of these cameras fit the bill, then, for taking up close (macros?) shots of my watch?? If that's the case I'm just gonna go with the cheap one for now and save for a nicer one

I'd suggest the Panasonic LX3 or the Panasonic TZ-5. My wife's TZ-5 is pretty affordable and has some fast, well-designed glass in front of it.

Well I am a huge Canon fan as well. The cameras you have listed above are GOOD "Point and Shoot" and they all have both a Macro mode and a Digital Macro mode.

Until I get a new DSLR, I have been using an older version of the cameras you are looking at. These photos were taken with a Canon SD630. http://www.rwg.cc/members/Black-and-Red-Br...g-B-t93889.html

This is as good as it gets, and it takes a lot of setup. The other problem is when the camera gets close enough to take a good macro shot, it casts a shadow or reflection of the camera in the crystal.

So, if you can live with this quality (probably better, since the SD630 is older) your original choices are not too bad.

I agree though for watch photography a DSLR or Canon G series at the minimum.

I'm looking for something that I can use to shoot some nice closeups myself, here's one idea that I'm going to try until I find one...

Someone pointed this out somewhere so I can't take credit for the find, only the sharing....

Good place to see how many people are using the camera you're interested in and what they've shot with it. I haven't found one yet that didn't take nice pics :)

  • 2 weeks later...

those are badass, Polex...

I finally pulled the trigger today. I used a 30$ off coupon and used the 20 off on the site, for a total savings of 50 bucks.

I did have to settle for the cheap point and shoot for now.

Thanks again all for the suggestions.

I'm gonna give 'digital macros' a hell of a shot if nothing else.
