  1. When all is said and done, the bottom line is that our reps are just that, replicas. Nothing more. They are copies, fakes, knockoffs, not the real thing. You can spend $3000 using mostly genuine parts, build a franken, and it still is not a genuine 'Rolex'. The only place you can sell one is to someone who wants a replica. And only a very few of us would pay $1000 or more for a replica. So, they're not snobs, they are realists. That said, I'm not goofy enough to pay $6,000 or more for a watch that I can buy/build/mod for under $500 that the 'experts' can't tell is a replica. This is where it comes in for our community. Everyone here 'fits' from the $100 'noobmariner' to the several $thousand 'franken'. Each of us chooses what is 'best' for ourself. And our community even has expert watchmakers who will service our watches with no issue, and likely better than the local guy who doesn't have a clue what we just handed him. With an ETA or other Swiss movement the local guy passes up business, and making money. That's up to him. With a 21j movement it's likely more trouble for him than it is worth. For under $25 you can remove the movement, hit it with a hammer, and install a new movement with limited skills and tools and all the help ever needed from members here. After all, the worst that can happen is you screw it up, and if it needed service, it was screwed up already. The first time is scary, the 5th time is fun, the 50th time is just a pain in the 6. We are special people here who make a silk purse from a cow's ear, and do it quite well. We learn and do, and have those who can do for us if needed. We have more options than anyone. We have made the best of watch ownership right here.

  7. When I take a rep to local watchsmith, I explain to him about the watch. I'll tell him how I sourced the movement, the dial, etc. Usually they are impressed with the effort that goes into it. There is a retired watchmaker near me who was Rolex certified during his professional years. When I brought him an Explorer II he was surprised that he couldn't tell it was a rep until he disassembled it. The only reps he had encountered before were the very shoddy ones. Most watchsmiths have no idea about how deep our underground hobby runs.

  15. That field seems perfect for the levels of magnification. It's the best of both worlds. Gosh, yes. I too have a daily struggle to keep my working desk clear of bits-and-bobs! The moveable boom was a great idea, it may have been pricey but then the practicality of being able to easily swing it out of the way when desired makes the cost worth it. As for a camera adaptor, I know this isn't exactly what you're looking for but I've read that they work wonderfully. It's a Bresser Digital Microscope. Bresser are a good quality German firm and their basic model only costs £40. It's feels a little cheap and plasticky however it takes pictures and videos up to 30 seconds long.

  16. That one looks good. My eyepieces are each 10x the scope is 7x to 35x and during research that's what the watchmakers on the forums reccomended. The field is large too, seems like its around 6-8" across when in use. There's usually from 2" to 4" underneath between say a movement and the bottom of the scope to work in. I'm searching for the adapter for cameras. I'd like to figure a way to mount my iPhone As I mention before I bought a boom that was a little expensive. Mostly so I could swing it out of the way, my desk is pretty small. I have got to clean this mess...it's been months since I've used this lol

A manual on how to post images using an external host can be found here. [4] - How NOT to post on this forum: 5 minutes after your initial post you reply to your own post writing something like "Why is nobody helping me? I'm sure you know the answer". Once somebody replies to your thread but doesn't give you exactly the answer you've been expecting you insult them. [5] - Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you! [6] - Don't post just to increase your number of posts. If you have nothing to say on a certain matter then don't post. The number of posts on this board has no direct relation to the experience of a member. Experience has taught us that it is not possible to create simple rules that cover every possible situation. Nor is it possible to anticipate the lengths to which an ill-intentioned person may go to create a way to make themselves a real pain, yet still somehow stay within the published rules. We therefore reserve the right to refuse membership to anyone at anytime, if we deem it necessary to do so. We will always try to give individuals the benefit of the doubt and communicate via PMs or email before taking any action, but there are only so many hours in the day, and we all have day jobs. The way we see this is fairly simple; we are investing countless hours in starting and maintaining this site. We hope it will continue indefinitely. We will therefore do everything we can to maintain a friendly environment for all concerned. The bottom line? We see the people who visit this site as our friends and guests. We intend to host an open house party, not a rock fight -- and we hope that you will take this spirit to heart. If we miss any posts or threads that cross these lines, we apologize. There's no way we can moderate these forums without an active core of members who share the values expressed here. If you do not share these values, we encourage you to find another board that is operating at your level of karma. These rules can be changed without notice.
