  1. In my case, the only ones I've ever built were vintage daytona's and big crown subs from the 50's.. It's very satisfying to source parts and gather them up, also to talk to other collectors and make relationships in the gen world. The parts aren't getting any cheaper so I'm really never concerned with getting my money back, if I can't sell it to an enthusiast I can part it out quite easily.. Mixing rep and gen parts is inevitable, not every part is available or affordable in it's gen form, and the idea is to get as close as possible. It's also nice to be able to wear my frankens, I would not wear their gen counterparts, those would have to be stored away. I can't really explain it but there's something very magical about the whole process. You either love it or you don't I guess. I'm fortunate and can probably buy a genuine 6538 if I tried hard enough but I rather make my own. I will gladly pay big bucks for a modern watch that I like, but I can't say the same for vintage Rolex's. The fact that they are tool watches and were very reasonably priced when they were available to buy from Rolex makes it very hard for me to justify spending 60k for a 300$ watch. I Just can't do it.

  2. The Athaya is a great replacement. I had Ziggy install it and we encountered some problems. It originally went onto a Silix case, whose side tapers in at the top (when viewed from the end of the lug). He had to drill the tube hole parallel to the case, not perpendicular to the side. This put the hole perilously close to the underside, where the caseback seals flat. It made a very minor protrusion but it still worked. On the Big Gonzo (MQ case) there was plenty of metal for it to fit correctly. It lived there until I could cough up the money for the gen crown.

  3. Thanks man! I totally understand where you're coming from, if that's your thing then that's cool. It's just not for me, maybe it's a progression thing and I'll get to the same point as you. For now those pam homage are a good adventure for me. I Appreciate it cc33

  4. Without hijacking this thread.... The franken thing..... I just don't get it, I understand creating a near perfect build, using rep or aftermarket parts and re-shaping etc... into something that really does replicate the gen.. but I'm not sold on the idea of mixing rep and gen parts. Maybe someone could enlighten me please.

  6. I did pretty well with the ST3035 case and a set of rep SELs and noob bracelet. But the bracelet isn't really correct for a 16800 matte dial franken. Don't know if you can still get the ST3135 case or not. If you could, a TC KH dial with the 2824-2 movement and your 93250 would look good- there was a period from around 2000 to 2003 when the lugholed cases were fitted with the SEL 93250. Here's a Y serial with the lugholed case and SEL 93250- circa 2003. This is the last of the lugholed cases. Older bezel insert with the flat 4 in 40. Last of the Y serials had the 16610 T case- no luholes and different bezel insert

  8. Yup, you are right M, I misread the Op's post. Probably due to you know what, its getting a little tiring.

  9. Hate to contradict you M but all A7750's I have ever seen have a special date advance wheel which makes it impossible to mess up. This opposed to the ETA 7750 which does have this problem. So in that regard the design of the A7750 is better than the ETA. So my guess is the problem lies not with the date advance gear but setting lever or yoke instead. Probably just something out of place. Could even be the hack causing problems.

  12. Yes good discussion, many good points made. But I honestly do not see many making profits on these, unless they bought the parts a long time ago. I can honestly say I have lost money on every single watch I have sold.....if I sold my 16750 or 5513 I would be lucky to recoup half the money I have invested, which I think is more relevant to some thoughts here. Need to be careful when planning a project or plan to keep it....like forever. I still believe for a majority of us, it is still about the builds and making something a nice as possible within a budget. Sometimes the budgets get out of hand or the gen equivalent is unobtainable so to do the build "correctly" costs increase. In the end the market should decide the value if ever sold. 15. Hate to be the one to say it, but hey unless you're going gen, what can you expect you know. With my little bit of knowledge as well, if I am not mistaken the was some black 6263 dials that had subdials with what was a very very faint silver color on them that in certain light did appear to be white, again I'm no expert so maybe some one can chime in. As for these dials with the heavy metallic silver color definitely agree with you 110% but they can be decent. I have a few that I have taken the crappy coronets off of and then sprayed with a matte finish, letting them dry then going back in with a paint brush and adding more layers on the subdials themselves, throw a gen coronet on them and they not terrible but not the best of the best Few examples: What it looks like in the case: http://www.rwgforum.net/topic/174858-the-vintage-daytona-6263-waiting-game/?fromsearch=1 -Will Sent from my !Phone using Tapatalk

  17. These are great points; well said, gents. I'm all in favor of helping noobs not get ripped off but lately I sense more and more threads that devolve into pissing contests that impugn the integrity of the seller. That's not how we operate here. In this place we share watch information and we try to raise the quality of the many discussions. We're better than ugly pissing matches. If I see something that's horrendously overpriced and there's someone trying to buy it who obviously has no clue what he's doing, I'll send a quick PM pointing him to a similar sale at a much fairer price, and suggest he exercise a little restraint. Nobody ever died because they missed out on a watch purchase. Let's watch each other's backs, and let's do it as gentlemen would.

  18. Nothing happened. I just waist my money. On all my e-mails he had standard reply that he don't received papers that proved the watch was stolen on China side. My recommendation will be do not deal with him. Dealing with him is kinda lottery. Customer service is awful.
