Just grip the stem gently in a pin-vice or with a pair of thin snipe nosed pliers then simply unscrew. Re-fitting to the new stem is the reverse of the above making sure you trim the new stem to the exact size of the original. If you want you can put a drop of loctite on to make it more secure...

Looks good, if you look long enough on the bay and bide your time you can pick up a second-hand gen insert. The last one I only cost me $15 plus shipping, I've paid up to $50 though...
