I noticed the same thing with mine recently -- I am going to attempt a thinned-out wash of semi-gloss black enamel paint, which I will apply and then wipe with a clean cloth while it is still wet to leave only the recessed lettering and logos filled in.
I'll let you know how it goes.
I just lubed out the caseback gasket and crown on my SSD when I first got it, and it has been fine for showering, swimming, etc. I know there are some members who have been diving with it, but regardless of the mods, I would never trust a rep for diving purposes. Just get a Seiko black monster if that's your bag. Besides, everyone knows that 99.9% of Rollie Sub/SD owners never go diving anyway!
I agree with alligator -- leave the crown tube alone, mod out the CGs, and get yourself a WatchMaterial pearl -- then swap out the pearl, mill down the bezel so you get a nice "lip" on the edge, and you're petty much there.
Agree with everyone on the excess writing - it reminds me of those cheesy made-in-China boomboxes with SUPER BASS written all over them. What I always liked about the SD was its low-key dial. Now - not unlike Michael Jackson - it has gone a Facelift Too Far, and looks like a 20-dollar hooker.
Shame, too, as I love the idea of a ceramic bezel.
By the by ... I recently obtained a Seadweller with lugholes, and between the lugs it says "ROLEX DESSIGN" and between the other lugs it says 'STAINLES SSTEEL" (note the spacing). Anyone ever come across one of these??
