  1. Check it out here: http://www.rwg.cc/members/index.php?showtopic=81113
  2. Awsome watch and even better review BT. Thanks for the time and effort.
  3. Guys, check out the "other watch" area. I put up a mini review with lots of pics of the Maxim Gorky (MG). Hopefully I did a half decent job with my first review. Oh, and the watch is already gone. Sorry guys. Really, it's a decent watch. I'm just a bit weird like that. I know whether it's for me or not from the first second I hold the watch. This one wasn't one of them, but that doesn't mean it isn't a good watch. It just didn't do it for me, but you guys all know what that's like.
  4. Mini-review of the Vostok Maxim Gorky watch Many of you may not be very familiar with Vostok, but Vostok is a watch company with a long history behind the Iron Curtain. A simple Google search should get those of you interested more detailed info on this company and its history. So I won
  5. Hey 0808, Well, that's a difficult question to answer. It's difficult because with reps QC can be little to none. Meaning that sometimes parts will fit well and sometimes it won't. It's really a crap shoot. So if you're lucky you may just get a rare combo of parts that fit like a gen does, and then sometimes you won't. Hard to tell really. One general rule to follow with reps. An occassional dip/shower/etc. might be ok if you've had the rep serviced for seals/etc., but the generally you should leave the H2O activities to gens. Hope that helps. And welcome.
  6. As a self professed noob, yep I still feel like a noob most of the time, I rely on many of you folks to lead the way. I doubt that I'll ever get to where many of you are today, but I can sure aspire to be one day. Many times I don't contribute, other than one-liners, usually because I feel that I'll just stick my foot in my mouth. So I just do what I feel that I can, which is just to be here and be part of the team. I wish there would be a sticky on, "how to conduct your first review". Then maybe others, myself included, will give it a go and you the "experets" can give creative feedback and help us along. I mean isn't that how we ensure that our hobby has continuity of life? Unless the experts, who obviously make up the backbone of this hobby, are helping, encouraging and teaching the noobs who will? How will all that precious knowledge and "how to" be transferred to the next generation without someone taking the time and effort to "pass" it along? Being at the top is usually a lonely place and a thankless job, but I'd assume that you'd get your rewards in a different way and from different sources. Of course, I do understand that one would need to have the desire to want to "pass" on their expertise and knowledge in the first place. Like the others have already said, we do see our share of ups and downs, but overall I think we've got a good place here and sure hope that EVERYONE, vets and noobs included, will continue to contribute and make this the great place this is. I'd also like to be the first to salute all of you who have a thankless job for taking time out of all your busy schedules and lives to make this place the place it is. I know that it's thankless and it must be annoying when things don't always work the way things should, but I'd think that's why this is a community rather than a class. How boring would it be if we just have teachers and students rather a coming together of various indivduals to share and exchange ideas?
  7. Welcome. Hey terje, is that turtle in your avatar???
  8. Welcome.
  9. Thanks for the info freddy. I guess I'll have to stop running the chrono from now on till I can get these suckers serviced. Now only if I can find a rep friendly watchsmith around SoCal.
  10. I'll try to do a mini review with pics over the weekend. I'm slammed at work till then. It's a good watch. It's definitely unique. I think it's got to do with the impluse buy and that I got a few other watches in at the same time with the bill. I was hoping for it to be more chunky and hefty though. It's not light, but not exactly what I look for in a watch. So out she'll go. Hey this is the life of a WIS right? ;p
  11. This is great info guys. I have one question. I have a Graham CF chrono and when I reset the chrono the second hand (the large one in the center) never aligns exactly at 12. It's off by a hair, but I'm anal and it bothers me. So I just let the chrono run all the time so I don't have to see it parked there and off center. 1. Is there a cheap fix to this? 2. Is my constantly running the chrono a bad thing? 3. Is it better to have the chrono stopped unless I'm timing something? Thanks in advance guys.
  12. I'm definitely not a pro on movements, but when the chrono is running the reset button shouldn't do anything. It only activates when the chrono is stopped, or so I remember. I think you've actually have another issue other than the reset button and probably should have the movement serviced by a pro. Maybe a pro like The Zigmeister will pop in with the right answer. Good luck.
  13. I'm sure there isn't much I can say to make things right or better, but having been where you are now I can sympathize. My best wishes goes out to you. Hope that time will heal all.
  14. Wow that's a nice pair!!!
  15. Welcome to the fold. You've come to the right place.
  16. Congrats! I wonder how long that will take me...
  17. Ok, I just got the watch and my initial impression is good. The watch has a very interesting dial and you can see the rotor wind underneath the dial, which is pretty cool. I'll try to take a few pics of her when I get a chance. Most likely over the weekend. I've just received three watches today and I'm going to offer all of them up for sale. Yep, it's one of those in and out deals. The Vostok just isn't chunky and hefty enough for my personl tastes. I'll include the free dressy auto Vostok watch I got with the Maxim Gorky. PM me if you're interested. I'll discount the two watches from what I paid for it. Oh, it hasn't even been worn more than 2 minutes.
  18. I was thinking the exact same thing.
  19. Welcome.
  20. Wow, this is another surprising turn of events with the AP ROO with secs @ 12.
  21. Hey Happy B-day!!! Best wishes. z
  22. I'm a bit dissapointed that they don't use a saphire x-tal, but not all that much. I would have preferred a saphire, but my experience with my other mineral x-tal watches tell me that I have nothing to worry about. The price I paid for it makes me feel better about it. Also, if you really can't stand the the mineral you could send it out for a custom saphire to be fitted. All in all, not a big concern.
  23. Just got an e-mail stating that all Vostok watches use mineral crystals.
  24. Welcome. I suggest you do a lot of reading before you pull the trigger on a rep. This site has tons of info that you'll need to answer your questions. Good luck.
