Thanks for all the compliments guys It was my unlucky watch that I just couldn't get done right. I knew it had to go to The Zigmeister for his magic touch -

Hi Guys, I apologize in advance for mediocre pictures, they in no way do justice to this watch. There's a long and boring story behind this PAM1B, suffice it to say this is my Eleanor (and no I'm not referring to the cheesy remake with Nick Cage but the 1974 original). There had been three different cases and dials involved in this project thus far, not to mention a myriad of hands, crowns and casebacks. Today, only the 6497-1 engine remains intact from the original piece I started putting together back in February 2009. I would like to thank The Watchmeister, AL12 and The Ziggmeister & last but not least SpeedyG for making my dream come true! Specs to follow *** New pics after the crystal's been fixed by Speedy

If we could just get a decent case, caseback and CG I'd be in heaven. The dials and hands are usually good so I'm not worried about that and the rest can be corrected. 2-tone relume from the ziggmeister, tourby or palp crown and takashi's datewheel and you're done

It's not set in stone. I'm speaking from my previous experience and I doubt that David will manufacture all parts for this watch from scratch, he'll most likely keep using his current interchangeable stock till he runs out. I'd love to be proven wrong on this more than anyone, 24A is one of my favorite PAMs.
-
There isn't much to say... Major kudos to David for working on this but I believe when it comes out you'll most likely end up with this: badly shaped case overbeveled crown terrible crownguard (there's really nothing to good i can say about dsn crownguards post-2007) thin font datewheel / weak mag cyclops caseback cut out of a tin can good handstack good dial great dealer if the bezel/ratchet assembly can go into 199 ultimate and jakob makes a caseback for this one i'll get one.. hell i'll probably get one cause noone else is making one.

If David is actually working on fixing the CG he needs to do a lot more than adjust its position on the case.

Looking great Mickey! The new Palp is a winner for sure even if a bit on the thick side. I think most early automatics including the early A series like 27A used a 1.98mm crown, while T48 is 2.03mm and with palp you could be as high as 2.05. You'd think that .02mm difference is difficult to perceive but T48 looks thinner than palp because of the bevel. To me the value in current Palp crowns is that they're a lot more "square" meaning the bevels running the sides of the knurled part of the crown are at a steeper angle. That makes them a very good fit for PreV watches. -
Who's the artisan that did the hands on this beauty? Or is it a closely guarded secret?
-
Hike, Beautiful watch - who did the hands?

Option 2 would be best I can take measurements of an OEM spring-loaded crown in Ti and SS with 2 digit precision.

Technically making a decent datewheel overlay should not be very hard. If you want to toy with this idea just pick up water-slide paper at a hobby store and print a negative of A21J datewheel raster that SSSurfer made a looong time ago. It'll take some time to align but you should have enough time before it sets.

I think it's Asian 21 jewel variety. Not sure of exact model, could be Dixmont or Seagull, nicely decorated.
-
okabum, that and also one of these
-
If you can make one with identical fit and finish to OEM for less than 500 you'll have a lot of buyers. So far nobody's been able to achieve that.

I would be interested to find out which post C-year 44mm luminor came with a 6mm cyclops. Is it possibe the A/R is aftermarket?

I'm not familiar with standard crystals but older cartel manual winds and DSN manual winds have the crystal dimensions pretty much spot on to gen Panerai one. The dimensions are: 35.5+/-0.05mm diameter and 3.5+/-0.04mm thickness measured in the center. JT's crystals are also 35.5mm diameter but they're 3.06mm thick. Thickness of the crystal is only half the trouble. There is a noticeable difference in crystal clarity and refraction between all rep crystals I've seen and a gen crystal. I've heard good things about a certain eBay seller's crystals but I've not seen anyone post comparisons.

yeah, i mistakenly posted twice. there's an L version of this dial in the updated 111E album.
-
My vote - 001b. It's a timeless piece and to me is what contemporary Panerai is all about. As far as the dial FGD has one but it's for PreA, if you go that route make sure you also source a good caseback (DSN 0401 or 0333 serials are the best for PreA). You you can get a very nice T SWISS T dial + hands set like this from DSN for $90: or if you're fan of L dials then this one should do the trick, also from DSN: for a good B series caseback pm HackR, he has one of the thick & heavy old school ones for sale.

Paid for mine today. These look excellent, just the right amount of bevel!
