Great review!
Another few things to note:
- Gen case does not have a pronounced strap notch, if you've seen the JF case between the lugs the design is similar. It's mostly in the very bottom of the midcase and has a flowing contour unlike DSN's case which has a very defined conical cutout.
- Midcase on the DSN model is taller because it's a multipurpose case used in all of his current builds including auto.
- Lugs are not tall enough, coupled with the thickness of midcase section they create a appearance of sitting too low in relation to the top of the midcase.
Yes, I hear you.. It's not easy to waterproof a cemented crystal, catch-22 is - if you put too much cement it beads on the other side, if not enough the watch is not water tight. Can someone with the right gasket possibly give us the measurements?
Hi Guys,
Does anyone know where one might find a proper teflon gasket for a JF case/bezel? I know that JF takes a standard 35.5mm sapphire but I don't have the original gasket so there's a bit of play with crystal installed because regular rep gaskets are too thin. I'm trying to avoid gluing it in.
Thanks!
They appear to be thicker than the previous batch on straps! Coupled with the excellent engraving (hope you use the same engraver) it will be great. I'm in for a couple for my PreV projects.
Phenomenal watch, very well done. You are correct about the A/R though, since the old 048/050 rep is matriculated as a 'C' series it's not supposed to have any A/R. The first time Panerai used A/R was in 'D' series. It would be a shame to strip it though as it looks tres exellent. On the other end of the spectrum my MBK PAM 48 is a 'K' series which comes with no A/R. Great crystal and cyclops though. Maybe we should do a swap
Ultimate 220 sold by cartel = Ultimate 104, w/ a brushed case + SS bracelet.
Same pros and cons found in the Ultimate 104 apply.
+ Decent caseset
+ Great crystal/cyclops
+ Good datefont
- Incorrect CG for I series, rep uses a contemporary looking CG and it should be a tapered-top historic polished w/ brushed lever
- Incorrect caseback (taken from rep 104I) 220I was limited run of 400 units
- 6 o'clock numeral should be open but since it's a recycled rep 104I dial it's closed
- crown too close to case
- L SWISS MADE L too close to 6 o'clock
- CP cap on the hanstack is not polished and has micro lathe swirlies.
those are just a few that come to mind.
Pete,
MBW = "Maria Best Watch", he was a dealer a long time ago that started importing watches he purchased at MBK Mall in Bangkok, Thailand. MBK/MBW term is used interchangeably to describe watches that hail from the MBK Mall. I purchased mine from Narikaa and I highly recommend him.
Big E,
I completely agree on MBK/MBW 40mm PAMs, they are the bee's knees in terms of overall accuracy and quality/finish of the case. However, I don't think they come with an ETA7750, just a high beat A7750. Unless you paid ~$1000 for yours I would not expect it to be a gen ETA.
Here's my wife's MBW PAM00048 'K' series:
Melu,
Check your PM. If you're looking at mainstream offering that josh/andrew/angus/tony and hont have right now you will be disappointed. And here's why, it's ironic but you would have to change the whole watch if you wanted it to look good. The new generation of 40mm models is vastly inferior to the old line circa 2005-2006 in terms of pretty much everything. The only thing the new model has going for it is the the A7750 movement so you can install a better datewheel but even then you will have the weaksauce cyclops to battle with.
Bottom line is - there are only 2 upsides to the new 40mm PAMs - the price (~$270, the old ones were ~$400-450) and the high beat A7750 movement.
Now on to the downsides:
- Horrible case set - believe it or not I've seen a couple that had all 4 lugs shaped slightly differently.
- Wrong dial for 'C' series L S M L instead of L S L on PAM48/50
- The CG is smaller size, the lever pin is placed exactly in the center of the CG and the lever itself has a wrong profile and thickness.
- The bottom part of the CG under the lever is the exact same thickness as the part above the lever (akin to DSN CGs)
- The crown has too thin of a brim around the counterbored dish
- Datewheel font too thin and incorrect for Panerai
- Cyclops is weak
- The caseback is too thin and incorrectly beveled
