  1. I don't know what that means. I presume its a bad thing.
  2. Well spotted. It's a very classy monochromatic watch.
  3. I made an educated guess. You'll not convince me I'm wrong on this one. ps. Where did I state he was from the US? You're inferring and then accusing me of assuming. Bad move
  4. Canadians are American. It's a continent, not a country. You can see what time zone people are in and unless he was in either of the cold circles, he was from the Americas.
  5. I've just received a PM on another forum, asking about the IWC GST. The sender mentioned he got a gen dial for 110 and was wondering if it's a good price. Well, it depends what currency you're using. I'm European (British) and I have worked in Euros and pounds sterling. I make a point of my Eurocentricity in my profile, telling everyone under my avatar that I'm British. If you want my opinion, talk my language and either use my currency or tell me what currency you'rte using. Assuming I'm American will never get you anywhere. 110 for a gen dial? Is that 110 clams? Sovs? Octopi? Cowrie shells?
  6. I tend to point them at my signature and tell them this is not the kind of question one should be asking of an individual. You can rest assured that if they've PMed you, they've PMed other prominent members. I don't mind replying impolitely if they come across as rude. Life's too short to waste time you could be spending on the community on just one person. It's rather selfish of them.
  7. I'd say Quartz is Lolo Ferarri - totally made up and ... um, dead. Automatic would be Angelina Jolie - beautiful beyond all others, but occasionally goes off the rails, and even that would be fun to watch.
  8. Quartz watches have no soul. Their cold robot hearts slice time into neat little dead seconds, counting down the time remaining before your death with their tick, tick, tick. They accurately tell you the time you have left each day in your dead-end job as you work your way to another ulcer, second by second, tick, tick, tick. Never missing a beat, the relentlessness of their scything of the day into painful and perfectly sized chunks driving you mad. Tick, tick, tick. No thanks. I'd rather have a less accurate but warmer, looser and more friendly mechanical marvel on my wrist, miniaturised by centuries of craftsmen all straining their eyes and putting their steady fingers to use improving what is essentially a machine for slowing down the rapid unwinding of a spring into a controlled smooth movement, the coiled tension controlled by man's ingenuity. I think you know where I stand on this one. Quartz is for kitchen clocks.
  9. This is why I always look at the EXIF data on lume shots.
  10. ...and then you'll see how hard it is. You can't get 1:1 without an original part to copy. I guarantee you this.
  11. Darwin? Darwin isn't a higher being. No-one in their right mind would die for Darwin. However, atheists lay down their lives for causes all the time. To suggest that they are inferior or have less compassion because they have no God is ridiculous. Think it through, civil protests are not about religion. The suffragettes weren't throwing themselves in front of the King's horses for god, for instance. Nobody dies for evolution as it's not a faith. Trying to pull it into a wrestling ring dressed as a religion so you can have at it with your faith-based moves will not work. Hint: It's not about evolution, it never has been.
  12. Beliefs? You don't get atheism. It's not a faith. I as a person who intellectually understands there is no God can accept, in a spiritual way, that there may be something out there. I just won't apply the same rules to it. I know there is no God. As an Atheist, I'm not trying to convert anyone, but when presented with someone trying to wedge religion into everyday life, I will get defensive. Most religion states that you have to convert people around you. You don't get door-to-door atheists, or soap-box atheists in the town square.
  13. ... and that's another discussion. I say no, we're not. We're much more unique and important than that. We make ourselves what we are and we need to take some pride in that. We put a man on the moon, for instance. Not God, us. We did that as a species. How amazing is that? Saying God made it happen takes away our incredible fortitude and makes us look like mere pawns. I'd rather live in a world where we, as a race, can go to the Moon, split the atom and run a four-minute mile than live in a world where we have no control over our own destiny or abilities. Religion was a very important part of getting ourselves out of the caves and to living in close supportive proximity to oneanother without killing each other, but we've outgrown its usefulness. Time to move on to the next chapter of human progress.
  14. Prejudice (not in the bigoted meaning, mind you) is a survival trait. In animals, we call it instinct. Someone walking towards you, looking menacing while waving a big stick is not going to get you thinking "Oh, he's trying to swat a fly while dealing with indigestion". If you react by running away, you have pre-judged him while not being in possession of the full facts. However, as you survive, you'll ... oh, I'd best stop here in case I offend any crackpot fundamentalists that don't believe in the evolution of species. Yes, I have no qualms about calling fervent believers of Intelligent Design crackpots. That's an instinct I have. I can't change it, but it is as decent a survival trait as any other I have, so I don't mind it.
  15. I will admit to being prejudiced by peoples' religions. I defy anyone to try to convince me they aren't. Oh, I mean prejudiced as in I prejudge them, not that I hate them or believe them inferior.
  16. "I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours" - Stephen Roberts Sorry, just had to drop that one in.
  17. Hey, TTK, your camera needs the year changing. It's not 2007 any more. From EXIF: Original Date/Time = 2007:02:26
  18. But he can't intercede for them. That's not how it works, surely. I just suppose I don't have enough faith to see past what I perceive as contradictions.
