  1. One other point to consider: the Chopard does not appear to have any AR. It's a busy dial, so you will likely see a fair amount of reflections. The Evo is known as one of the reps with the best AR. I was thinking a bit more about the comparison of these two watches last night. I decided that for me, the difference comes down to this: The Chopard is a sporty watch that is also elegant. The Evo is an elegant watch that is also sporty. I think a lot of people will make their choice based on which characteristic is most important, and which is secondary.
  2. I have three Asian 7750 watches, and one is the Chopard Mille Miglia GMT and a second is the Evo. I haven't had a problem with the movement on any of the three, but I have higher confidence in the Chopard and Evo movements than the one other 7750 that I own, which is an IWC GST. It's not that there is anything wrong with the GST... so far.... except that the winding stem seems rather loose on that one. In any case, it is going for service soon because I really like the GST as well and want to have it for a long time. But back to the Evo and Miglia GMT. At first I was very reluctant to buy the Chopard because it has the added complication of a GMT function, which is something to consider when 7750s have a spotty history to begin with. But damn, it's a gorgeous watch, so I took a chance and I couldn't be happier that I did. The movement itself feels rock solid, keeps great time, and has one of the best power reserves of any of my watches. It's one flaw, which I want to have fixed soon, is that the crystal needs to be realigned so that the cyclops is more perfectly centered over the date window. The Evo feels really good as well, but there is a bit of looseness in the winding stem -- not as much as on the GST, but it's still there. I plan to have it serviced in the near future, because I really like the Evo as well. It's a solid, fantastic watch with very good AR. From a looks standpoint, both are knockouts. I have the white dial Chopard with black subdials, but all variants are among the most stunning reps available, in my opinion. I was also tempted by the gold dial version, but I really wanted the metal bracelet and the gold dial version only comes with a leather strap. I got the gray dial Evo (the earlier gray dial version which looked more like the graphite dial than a genuine gray, but I don't really care because I still like it a lot). Whether you go with the white, graphite, blue, or gray dial versions, this watch always looks better on a leather strap, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, the Evo bracelet is excellent, but I keep putting this watch back on a leather strap. It's classier, in my opinion. So the choice of which is better (let alone which dial combination to go with) ends up being fairly subjective. In my case, I'd vote for the Chopard, because I think it is simply one of the very top two or three styles, because I prefer bracelets to straps, and because I love GMT functions even more than chrono functions. Perhaps if I had it to do over again, I would go for one of the SS variants of the Chopard (I'd probably stick with the white dial/black subdial version that I have) and a two-tone Evo, which I think would look fantastic with either a two-tone bracelet or a leather strap. For you, go with your gut opinion.... or get one of each. In your heart, do you prefer the Evo styling or the Chopard? Do you lean toward leather straps or bracelets, and how do you size up the bracelets that come with each? SS or two tone? I will end with this thought: I think you will be getting a great rep no matter how you sort out these options. Cheers (pour yourself a scotch to savor while you make your decision), and good luck.
  3. Back to my laptop. It's nice to know that I can browse the forum, view pictures, and even post messages from my cell phone. But this site is too data intensive and complex to browse through comfortably from that form factor, so I probably won't be doing that very often -- perhaps if I am monitoring an auction or sale and know that I won't be near a computer with Internet any time soon. I need to check out the low-fi version of RWG as well.
  4. response sent from my cellphone keyboard. Woo hoo.
  5. I just purchased a new phone a few days ago, the ATT (HTC) Tilt, also referred to at times as the Kaiser or 8925: Initial reviews have been great, but it may take me a while to get used to the form factor, touch screen, and other new bells and whistles, of which there are plenty. My last cell phone before this was a Motorola MPx 220:
  6. Welcome, ss. I hope you enjoy your time here.
  7. I have had the white dial-black subdial version for a few months now, and both the GMT and reserve functions seem to be rock-solid. I was hesitant to get this watch because of the addition of the GMT function on top of a 7750, but so far my impression is that this is the best built of my four 7750s. Yes, the chrono hand is a bit jerky. But otherwise I couldn't be happier with the looks and build quality of this watch. Cheers.
  8. Just this a.m. I was thinking that it was time to change my wallpaper. Great shot. Nice autumn motif. And nice date wheel.
  9. Dangerman, On behalf of the rest of the board, I want to thank you for sparing us the pictures. Cheers, and have a beer. You deserve it.
  10. I agree on the leather strap suggestion as opposed to a metal bracelet. Not everyone is equipped... or skilled at adjusting bracelets and after frequent adjustments even a good bracelet is likely to wear down. I agree with your suggestion that it be restricted to active RWG supporters. But one other suggestion: How about stipulating that recipients make a $10 per week donation to RWG for the period they have the pass around watch in their possession? That seems like a nominal amount for the privilege you would be offering people. One other idea: If there were two pass around watches, one could make the rounds in Europe and the other circulate in the US. (Sorry Ken and the other Aussies, not trying to exclude you, just thinking of the logistics of international shipping.) In any case, have a great vacation. Consider yourself "off the clock" for the duration.
  11. Go to youtube.com, search on "tourbillon" and you'll find several videos that show a tourbillon in motion. Very cool... and beautiful to behold. (I tried to post links to a few, but apparently I need to review the instructions on how to add youtube links to posts. Simply using the YouTube button didn't do the trick.)
  12. The next frontier..... "Sure, anyone can make a rep that has correct lume, AR, case back, serial numbers, and date font, but does it Taste like the gen?"
  13. Floris, I can't say much of anything that hasn't been said already. Be relaxed, be yourself, and the dorm friendships will sort themselves out. If these other kids are away from home for the first time, too, then they are probably at least as nervous as you are. A few beers, or even a basket of candy bars by your door, might be all the ice breaker that is needed. (Although I wish I had lived next to whoever said single malt scotch is the way to go.) Cheers, and enjoy where you are.
  14. I got a replacement Ingeneur bracelet from Andrew. I did not have to buy the case. Considering that these bracelets have been known to break, he or one of the other dealers ought to be able to help you out. Good luck. If mine breaks again, I will probably go to a strap.
  15. I bought the exact same model about two weeks ago. Awesome. Just plug it in and go (although I did reformat the drive before actually putting data on it).
  16. Things have slowed down a bit. Let's make that $210
  17. In previous elections McCain's maverick comments and personality gave him notoriety. He spent the last four years toeing the line and fawning over Bush to please the Republican king makers and it hasn't gotten him anything but also-ran status. So what does he have to lose by shooting from the hip a bit?
  18. When shaving becomes too much of a chore, I let the beard grow. When trimming the beard becomes too much of a nuisance, I start shaving again. It's a vicious cycle.
  19. That sounds like a decent move. If you no longer have the docs that came with your system, try to find instructions online for installing the new RAM. I'll bet you can easily install it yourself and save ab. $30-40. The insides of computers, even laptops, are a lot less delicate than the insides of our watches. Just be sure not to shuffle your feet across the carpet before you do this. Cheers.
  20. Ok, I'm glad you verified that you at least tried the other fixes. So here is one more possibility-- consider buying a used laptop as your interim machine. I just bought a fantastic HP multimedia laptop in August for $700. It was only ab. six months old, and turned out to be more computer than my wife (the primary user) was asking for, but it has everything that I had had specced in terms of memory (2G), CPU, and hard drive, and features a huge screen, the highest quality laptop keyboard I've ever used, and even has built-in Altec Lansing speakers. The one negative that I found, not surprisingly considering the above-mentioned feature list, is that it is a bit on the heavy side. But that doesn't both my wife who was looking for a desktop replacement rather than asuper compact. Best of luck, whatever you end up doing.
  21. That sounds like a hardware-related issue, so I think you need to find out how alignment and screen size are adjusted for your particular monitor. If you don't know how, I sugges that you either refer to the documentation that came with the laptop or go to the manufacturer's web site for instructions. Good luck with your sale. With a cracked monitor I don't know how much you are going to get for it. My guess is that the cost of repairing the existing monitor is such that it may not make sense to do so. Thus the buyer is likely to use the laptop either for spare parts or with an external monitor.
  22. You're kidding, right? You've never seen performance suffer when a disk becomes too full? Or when file storage is not optimized? And why suggest that someone spend money on a temporary fix until they've exhausted all the free options?
  23. If the replacement laptop is just a short-term fix, I'd first consider: -- Defrag (can really make a difference when fragmentation exceeds 20-25%. -- Free up some disk space for your swap file (inadequate swap or temp file space can bring an otherwise decent PC to its knees) --Add memory (1G sounds good, but it depends on how many known and background apps are running at the same time. Open a process and/or performance monitor (Ctrl-Alt-Del) to see what is happening.) Any one of these might buy you the improved performance you are looking for, without having to reload Windows or spring for a new laptop. The first two measures would cost you absolutely nothing, and you should investigate these issues whether you buy that second laptop or not.
  24. My theme is variety and balance between white, black, and other dial colors; straps vs. bracelets, chrono vs. non-chronos, plain vs. numeric bezels, etc.. I have: Two Pams--192 and 065--one on strap, the other on bracelet (they alternate) Two IWCs-- Ingeneur and GST (both on bracelets, the latter is the white dial version) Four Omegas-- a Speedmaster, Seamaster Pro GMT, and Ultimate Planet Ocean (the latter has the black bezel with pumpkin numerals), and a "small" orange PO (the UPO is temporarily on a strap; the Speedy and small PO alternate between straps and bracelets) Two Chopards -- XL white dial on a leather strap, and a Mille Miglia GMT white dial on a bracelet Breitling Evo-- grey dial on a dark green strap (I also have the bracelet, but IMO this watch begs to be worn with a leather strap) Two VCs -- an Overseas white dial on a bracelet; a rose gold Perpetual Calendar on a strap Cartier Santos 100 My focus right now is adding a two tone or gold dress watch to my collection, and eventually replacing the Perp Calendar and Santos 100 with higher quality options.
  25. I just purchased a minty UPO at considerably less than retail from another long-time supporting member and delivery was prompt as heck. On top of the unrivalled information and great cameraderie available here, I dare anyone to tell me I didn't get tremendous value out of my membership this month. Thank you RWG and particularly our Admin. :clap2:
