  1. does anyone have any info on where i might find a brevet crown? i can't justify $800 but if there is a slightly more cost effective solution then Im all ears gorgeous watch by the way, really looking forward to getting my hands on my laterst acquisition
  2. a guy at work is selling this piece and i took a couple of pics for a friend who was interested.. not really what he was looking for (the watch has been worn daily for the last 5-6yrs) so he's passing, but thought the pictures might be of use to someone here for reference.. the pics are not brilliant as they were taken with a dodgy work camera in one hand and the watch in the other hand or resting on my knee (taken from the passenger seat of the car as the owner wasn't keen bringing it into the office for some reason!) anyway, hope these are useful to someone for comparison work, and don't rip on my photography skills too much small images displayed, links to fullsize images underneath each one full size image full size image full size image full size image full size image full size image full size image
  3. thanks for the info.. perhaps i will look for a movement and then get it mounted up (I shouldn't have too many problems making a movement ring to suit) i guess dial/hands it might make sense to get a good replacement dial for a rolex movement and then use that with ETA hands rahter than try to fit 1575 hands onto the ETA? interesting that the hand stack might be correct in a vintage GMT; wasn't that bothered about hand-stack as IMHO its not that noticable without a high MP camera, macro mode and a tripod.. ..obviously if the ETA is correct then thats great
  4. i've read a fair bit about CHS / ICHS ETA Movements on this forum but wondered if anyone might be able to give me a bit more indepth help? would an ETA (or other "rep") movement fit in the place of a 1575 type movement?.. Im basically looking for something that i can put into a 1:1 replacement case designed for a 1575 movement.. I've looked at cases/movements together but no one seems to build a decent GMT Master or Explorer II rep at the moment, however I've come across a decent 1:1 replacement 1675 case and would like to get a suitable movement for it that isn't going to cost the earth for now.. any pointers would be great, also i notice yukiwatch have dial/hand sets for around 120 USD for the 1575 movement.. would this be suitable for a non 1575 movement with some mods, or are there better ETA / other dial and hand sets available elsewhere? basically im looking to build a nice franken but would like to get the case/bracelet right, hands/dial as close as poss, and movement working for now; i will upgrade movement (dial and hands also) when funds permit.. thanks in advance
  5. thanks for the quick reply, i let him know b
  6. can anyone confirm whether this is gen or rep from the available pics?.. any help appreciated; a friend is considering purchasing.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160377032878&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123#ht_500wt_976 thanks in advance
  7. southcoast IT WAS YOUR SIG!! gorgeous watch, will have a read of your link above! Thanks for the reply b
  8. This is probably a really dumb newb question, but someone here has a signature picture of a blue/red bezel'ed rolex taken from the side with what looks like a really smooth slim case.. I don't know who's signature it is but I'm more interested in finding out a bit more about the watch? It looks to my newbie-eyes like a GMT but the only pictures I can find are of GMT II which has a more square case? Im assuming this is a more vintage/older model?.. Any information or a link to a write up, etc. appreciated; I've tried searching but everything turns up GMT II which doesn't look the same
  9. that watch looks really nice and good value at 200 bucks.. given the amount of modding that goes on with vintage reps around here, i can't imagine any of the shortcomings aren't surmountable.. also its not a bad thing to practice on before laying into your MBW or gen case for the first time with a file also i seem to remember reading that lots of the gen reds/double reds, etc were so different from watch to watch, that its going to be hard for anyone to say "ooh that lug hole is 1mm too low anyway?.. crown guards seem to be popular "tells" but again there are gen's out there with different shaped crown guards top vs. bottom on the same watch!! something like that could make a great low cost base for modding, potentially giving a nice visually "correct" vintage franken for not a lot of money.. look forward to seeing more like it in the future!
  10. sounds like a good plan i will look into that and see what i can find.. i was also thinking about maybe a gmt or something, however i don't know anything about these models as i've only ever really been interested in the divers and daytona's!.. any other ideas?
  11. Budget will be around
  12. my dad turns 65 in 12 months time and i'd like to get him something a bit special as a present.. ever since i was a kid he's had a
  13. i'd be interested, please let me know how this goes.. i have a test piece that i've been messing around with thats a bit of a beater but the dial really lets it down.. would be nice to have something like this for it rather than the crappy modern style one thats on it at the mo..
  14. i normally hate the prospect of staring at a computer all day, but at least the view is a nice one this morning.. today i will mostly be wearing my PO
  15. I'm in love! Been lusting after one of these but with a black dial (gold markets&case) for some time!..
  16. as yesterday; totally battered beater today as i'll be working on machines all day.. this is a $20 egypt brought rep which has been used as a test piece for case mods, ageing bezels, hands, etc.. its been slowly turned it into an over-polished semi-vintage wreck, but its kinda fun to wear when you're goofing around working on cars, decorating, etc!..
  17. totally battered beater today and friday as i'll be working on machines all day.. this is a $20 egypt brought rep which has been used as a test piece for case mods, ageing bezels, hands, etc.. its been slowly turned it into an over-polished semi-vintage wreck, but its kinda fun to wear when you're goofing around working on cars, decorating, etc!.. ps.. first time i've ever tried to take a pic of a watch, so go easy on me!..
  18. how do you figure that?.. i know the bezel looks a little bit like a rolex, but then so do 1/2 the wannabe dive watches out there, otherwise its pretty unique?
  19. yeah its a shame; such a nice combo as you say.. i don't like the graham watches, but these seem to strike a balance between tool sport and fashion soooo well!..
  20. does anyone know of a rep of this amazing looking watch?.. ..i've had a search around but found nothing. would be really interested to hear of any reps regardless of colourway thanks in advance
  21. you're a star; don't have a repgeek account, was relying on google! right time to get buyin'!
  22. i'm looking to do a similar mod to the crown and tube on my UPO so thanks for the above part number info.. i would also like a replacement bezel insert/pearl and a gen crystal, however im struggling a bit; cousins seem to have all the parts i need but they require a case number for searching?.. any idea what the case number is for a gen PO? also will a gen crystal/bezel insert fit or will either require some "persuading"?!
  23. ok, i did manage to find the link again, it was here.. getat watch co. ..i was quite surprised by the cost of the 44mm PVD case set and PVD movement but not sure wether this would make a good base or i'd be better off going with either a complete DSN watch or trying to find a "jimmy" case and build one up from there time for more reading and some thinking!! b
  24. thanks for the info, very informative.. i will have a search tonight and see what information i can find for myself also and hopefully the link to that site for some feedback on whether its any good or not!.. i will also have a look at pvd coating process and see if its something i can have done locally; i have a lot of contacts in electroplating, chemical blacking, etc. so would be interesting to see if any of them can offer pvd coating! as for machining crowns i have a very good contact for machining who makes a lot of 1 off parts for cars for me including discontinued motorsport parts. im not sure whether he'd be able to turn something so small though (movement spacer rings and things yes, watch crown pins im not so sure! ) thanks again b
  25. thanks for the information, its certainly a tempting route.. i saw a website this afternoon linked from another forum which i found google searching PVD and how the process was done which had a lot of movements, cases, dials, etc. on it all at quite reasonable prices and i was thinking about this option (while i should have been thinking about driving) on the way home.. they had pvd cases with a display case back (something im not too bothered about on a pvd; i'd be perfectly happy with a solid back) for around $40 (+$15 for saphire) dials for about $20 and PVD'ed asian handwind movements (which would work really well with a display back) with cannon pin mod done for about $60.. total cost was looking really good compared to $300 from DSN although i understand there are quite a few mod's done to his watches before sale like cannon pin and crown? i guess the things which put me off following the self-build route above is that i don't understand a couple of things at this stage due to my noob-ness! 1) whether gen crowns are like rocking horse s**t and expensive 2) who jimmy is 3) who or what FGD is 4) what sort of price pvd and beadblasting would be 5) because of the above what the total cost would be i have had a little search around and found PVD costs around 500 - 600 dollars US to have done, although that might be because im looking in the wrong place? because of that i might be leaning more towards a pvd case to start with unless they're going to be no good otherwise its a complete write off for me (Im hoping for around $450 total which would have to include buying a nice strap from someone like red12). also im not sure whether the prices i've listed above (dial, movement, case) are normal, high for no reason, or low because the quality is not great, but i guess this is all down to my lack of experience and knowledge at this stage.. unfortunately i saved a link to the website i found at work so don't have access to it until monday and can't seem to find it through google i like the idea of building my own as it would help my knowledge and also allow me to gain experience and confidence fiddling with watches.. thanks again for the above info, i guess i'll be using the search button a lot this evening!!.. b
