time for a bump

bump to get this thread up to 200 posts and because I want this watch!

This is number one on my "most wanted rep" list. I like the size especially. Most of the really nice reps over the past year or two have been giant watches that are 44mm and up. This is a nice size for everybody at 39mm, especially for those who don't like wearing watches that could double as serving platters on their wrists. It would be a nice niche for a dealer; there have to be lots of people like me who love watches around 40mm in size.

The Portuguese is one of the nicest looking reps out there. It really is a shame about the "seconds at six" issue. I sent mine to The Zigmeister and he froze the seconds for me. Now I have a long-lasting Portuguese that still looks great, even though it is crippled! It was worth it to me to keep the watch around a while. If you are interested in doing the same, search the forums for his posts about this.

C'mon Angus, go for it! This would be a huge hit... you can feel the excitement. The people want a Mark XVI. Once its out and we tell everybody how awesome it is, you will have to contract with a second factory to up production to keep up with demand!

I've wanted one of these since trying one on at a dealer last summer. I would definitely buy one if they come up with a high-quality rep of this watch. Seems like a consensus is growing here that this would be a popular model... I hope the dealers are paying attention.

My addiction to reps led to worse.... now I want to have some gens too! Just bought my first one, an omega seamster prof. A real beauty. But the real benefit of the reps is that my sig other doesn't have to know its a gen! To her, its just another watch i got in the mail! Heh

For me, the biggest detriment is easily the poor strap quality. The watches themselves are amazingly high-quality replicas, but to put them on a cheap plastic-looking strap just takes away their beauty. I have replaced the strap on all of my replicas, and its worth the money. It really does make a difference.

I have an IWC Portuguese Chrono with the 7750 movement that had a particularly annoying whirrrrr sound. You could hear the rotor turn from 10 feet away, and every 10 minutes or so it would go nuts; it sounded like a tightly wound spring was unwinding inside the case. I love the looks of the watch, but the sound was so annoying that I never wore it. I would have been embarassed if someone had heard that incredibly loud sound. But from reading the forum, it seems as though my watch had much more noise than the typical rotor noise that people talk about with this movement. Anyway, I read the thread mentioned earlier about how to fix the noise by applying axle grease to the rotor. I was going to go ahead and give it a try. I figured that since I never wore the watch because of the sound, there was little risk to me. But The Zigmeister cautioned against it. So I took an alternative route: I bought some high-grade all purpose watch oil (Moebius synt-a-lube 9010) on ebay for about fifteen bucks and put a half-drop on the rotor. My assumption was that this would be less dangerous than using axle grease. Well, it worked beautifully for me. The rotor is almost entirely silent now. You can only hear the whirr if it is by your ear, and the "unwinding spring" sound is completely gone. The watch is on my wrist as I type this. So for me, that was a great fix and well worth the money I paid for the oil. I now wear the watch regularly.

Eight Reps: 2 IWC (Portuguese Chrono, FA Jones), 3 Patek Philippe, 1 Panerai, 1 Lange, 1 Rolex Six Gens, but none are super high-end.

I agree with you on the wife ratio Ken. That's why I have two out of every three I order delivered to my work address! You know what they say... better to ask forgiveness than permission!

Blue Omega Seamaster $1119 when I added it to the shopping basket. Don't know if that's a good enough deal to pull the trigger.

My best is a Martin Eric Clapton model acoustic. I have 6 electrics and three acoustics, and this is easily the cream of the crop. The thing just sings when played. Cost me a fortune, but I will have it the rest of my life so its easy to justify the expense.

Gens: 6 2 citizen eco-drives. Nice, reasonably priced gens. 2 seikos 2 gen watches purchased in China; I don't know the brand cause its in Chinese characters Reps: 7, soon to be 8 1 Rolex Oyster purchased in Malaysia-- a great watch after four years of use. 3 Pateks from trusted dealers 1 Panerai from trusted dealers 1 A. Lange and Sons from trusted dealer waiting on an IWC from trusted dealer 1 Patek purchased in Shanghai knock-off markets for way too much money that never worked. wrist time over last two months: the citizen eco-drives get about 20%. Patek Caletravas get 40% Pam gets 20% A. Lange gets 20% Only wear the Rolex occasionally now because I have so many other choices.

Good point. The main thing is how wide the wrist is at the top rather than the circumfrence. For me, anything over 40 mm just dominates my wrist and doesn't look good. I guess its also a matter of personal taste. I just don't like to wear a watch that covers the entire top of my wrist. For others, that is the ideal size watch! Main point: know what you think looks best and find watches you like in that size.

I've also got small wrists (7.5"") and I've found that 40 mm watches are the upper limit for me. I've got a few 37mm watches (two pateks) that look great... I think that's about the right size for me. I wish I could pull off a 44 mm panerai, but it just looks silly on me. Good idea on making sure that the Cartier watch you yearn for isn't too big for you.

Great idea Toni. You've inspired me to go ahead and sacrafice one of my old reps for learning purposes. Will be fun to see what the heck is inside more closely if nothing else.
