  1. I keep a separate bank account strictly for receiving wires.

But even with your bank account info and your PP email, what could he do with that?

Log into your PP (by asking PP to reset the password using your banking credentials) and start transferring funds from your bank and send it to his own PP account?

Can you really do this?? I hope they'd need more than just some banking info to reset your password. Also, you'd be sent an email notification, so you'd know if anyone was trying to 'hax' into your account.

  2. Now of course I'm wondering if it might be a little cheaper to modify an existing pair of endlinks. Finding a pair that are too large and whittling them down would probably be easier.

Just so you have a visual, check out the photo below. You can see the huge gap between the watch head and end link, as the fifty fathoms have pretty long lugs. I would want the endlink flush against the watchhead naturally.

  3. Do you have a design or are you going to need the machine shop to design + manufacture? It's going to be very pricey to have one-off components made, moreso if CAD work is required. Design, tooling, setup, and 316ss material are going to cost a boatload.

I'd try to look around for machine shops in your area. You'll have better luck if there are major manufacturers near you which are supplied by smaller machine job shops. One in my area comes to mind and I can check and provide a website/phone number if needed.

I don't have a design, just have the "look" I'm going for.

I'm using an omega folded link braclet, so will be making a stretched-out/wider version of these end links:

Any info would be greatly appreciated :)

  4. Phong has good cases (that will still need modding), but that's about it!

I'd suggest getting Michael Young 1680 hands if you're going to go aftermarket.

It's tough to find an accurate gen-feet placement red dial. To me they just don't exist.

I believe Misiekped has a 1570 date disc for sale in the parts section that is appropriate for your build :)

  5. Wow, that's getting serious !!! I'm starting to regret to put up that nice yet simple 1016 on the table.... It can't stand vs the gens !!!! Can a restored gen be considered a build? Afterall, what will we be judging here? Skills in "restauring" a watch weather the parts are gen or not?

You've got a good point here. Maybe there should be a few tiers? (e.g. Under $500 builds, Under $1000 builds, Under $3000 builds, etc)

  6. Ok.. Ill play...

What started out as a gen midcase and TC SD dial and eta movement, morphed over two years of sourcing parts into the final product you see here.

Damn you for selling this Y. Damn youuuuuuuu!  ;)

  7. Here is my baby

    Specs:

MBW Case, Caseback and Bezel construction + insert

    Whoopy Mark 2 DRSD Dial

    Yuki hands

    Swiss ETA

    Gen Superdome T39

    Ofrei pearl

Case work (bevel reshaping, CG reshaping, gen spec lug holes) and aging done by Rolojack that built it perferctly on any side. He even faded the insert as i like it.

I honestly thought this was Nanuq's piece at first. Then I spotted the insert, and wondered why he swapped his - that's when I scrolled over to his username and realized it was you! Great build :D

  8. I believe that today, it's probably a good place to start to make a reasonably priced 1680. If you like the watch, and you want to step up to a better version later, there are several avenues, but at greater expense. And old MBW case set, or a phong, make great cases to start a really nice 1680. Add the 702 crown, gen insert/ pearl, gen or good aftermarket crystal, gen dial, slow beat like a serviced ETA 2846 movement and a good bracelet with 580 end links and you have a really, really nice 1680. Putting that all together is going to cost a fair amount, and I would make sure that a 1680 is what you want before spending a lot. Just my personal opinion, but there are more good white dials available, and like I said gens can be had at a fairly reasonable price.
