Thanks, brother, it was a great day, with great company, so a top result all round :)

I quite agree, the 1655 is an awesome watch, I'm just thinking the GMT bezel would be more functional than just the AM/PM indicator, but, you never know, when it arrives, it might completely win me over, and remain in stock configuration :) Only time will tell :)

TeeJay, looks to have a few of the more important bits missing!

It's not telling time as well as it used to... :g:

  2. I have to admit, I have previously thought that DDs/DJs to be a little on the small side, but, having seen the Rhodium dialled DJ I got my wife a while back (replacement to hopefully arrive soon) I think that it's probably a size I could get used to wearing, and if I wanted a real 'sleeper' watch, a DJ would be my choice. Subs/GMTs have the more luminous dials which I find easier to read, but, they're not really 'smart' watches. Yacht-Masters are certainly smarter than Submariners, but still more in the 'bling' range than 'classic elegance', and I think that's where the DJs truly come into their own :good:

  3. I wuz gonna say I bet I knew where you got it from until you linked it, it's nice to have a kindred spirit on board! I'm sure it won't stay a "virgin" for long, "The mod side calls to you, Young TeeJay, it is your destiny"!

As far as budget, demsey has it about right in that it is a relative thing - to me, high-end is anything costing over $100. I like the "budget beaters" because it might show people without deep pockets they can have fun, too - plus I'm a "cheap ba$tard", at least I am according to wife.gov...

TeeJay, I have it's second cousin, a $32.90 Explorer II, on order (from same place my no-date came from) and I have no idea what I'm gonna do with it!

    Oh, Happy Birthday! B)

I would've used the site you got the dials from, but I didn't have the spare cash for the WU fees (that would've meant no Pocari Sweat for me, and that was an urgent purchase  ) so I went with David again :) As you say, it won't be staying virgin long. Just long enough for me to take some photos for the review, then it's going to be getting its guts pulled  As much as I like the idea of wearing the same(ish) watch as Steve McQueen, the AM/PM function wouldn't really be of much use to me, where, throwing it into a case with a rotating bezel, means I can use my spare GMT insert, thus converting the AM/PM indicator into a functional GMT indicator :victory:

You're absolutely right about what Demsey was saying, and I openly admit, I'm also a cheap bastard, so 'bang for the buck' is pretty much my number one priority. I was seriously tempted to order the DJ for the woody instead, as that was £5 cheaper than the 1655, but I figured I'd wear the hybrid more, than I would the woody, so a £5 saving wouldn't be such a saving if it just sat on the shelf waiting for 'nights out' to get wrist time

    And many thanks :drinks:

  4. That's quite a collection, bro :victory:

I would take photos of my Rolex collection, but it mostly consists of empty cases and half-completed projects :) The only truly wearable one, is the Snowflake Tudor, as I damaged the movement in the vintage sub yesterday through sheer laziness/clumsiness, and now the second hand moves as gravity takes it, which is part of the reason why I decided to order the 1655, rather than the DJ to continue 'project woody' I can see this being my future Rolex collection when all the projects are complete...

Snowflake Submariner on NATO strap (for hot weather/extended low-light situations)

    Tudor Submariner (alternate beater)

    Wood-dialled DateJust (for 'dress situations')

Black-dialled DateJust on leather strap (for more 'formal' situations)

    Vintage ExplorerGMT Hybrid (daily beater)

GMTIICSubDweller (a project build purely for its own sake, which might not see much wrist-time  )

(and whatever I can cobble together from any spare parts  )

When I eventually get the LV Sub as the hand donor for my project, would you like the green insert for the 'virgin sub' on the bottom right? I wouldn't want it for anything, so if you'd like it, just let me know :)

  5. Sounds fun. Happy BDay.

You...leave a watch untouched? Never...it will never happen. It will be extreme modded!!

You may well be right there, modding is just too much fun, but there might be a watch eventually which will remain in a 'stock condition' (or as close to stock as a home-build can be), I just think that the 1655 guts will make for a great combination with the low-profile case :) Thanks for the birthday wishes :drinks:

  6. @TJ -- Happy Birthday!... :whistling:

    R-

    @TJ.... Happy Birthday to you too ;) ;) ;)

Thanks indeed, amigos, I had a fantastic day, I just had to wait for some cash to clear into my account before I could get myself my birthday present  (I also treated myself to some Pocari Sweat, I've had some serious cravings for that since getting back from Tokyo :Jumpy: )

  7. Can't wait to see it, mate! :)

I'm rather looking forward to it myself, it's been a while since I did a decent review :) Having considered, I think I'm going to go with my plan to create a hybrid ExplorerGMT, mainly to maximize the functionality, but also, because the low-profile vintage case is just so damn comfortable to wear :victory:

Here's the dealer's listing, it'll be interesting to see how the watch matches up to what's advertised :)

  8. Being an artist as well, the best explaination I can offer is this:

You may be a great painter and skilled with Acrylics, moving over to oils you have to start all over again.

Same if your an oil painter, moving over to acrylic, you have to start all over again.

The skill set from one is not transferable to the other.

I use oilers for the lume application, a good mixture of lume is the consistancy of snot, on a cold canadian winter's day playing hockey...:)

I have to admit, I've never actually tried using oils for painting, I never could get to grips with water color, and my skills with acrylics is 'limited', to say the least... What I really need to try my hand at, is tattooing... 100% concentration required, and almost no margin for error (I would say 0%, but sometimes, things can be 'fixable') That was the mindset I tried to have when working on my dial :)

So consistency wise, we're talking something like hairgel? More viscous than water, but not as solidified as Swarfega? Thanks for the advice :)
