  1. I'd say spend the cash on a vacation or some equally memorable event/treat. At the end of the day, I just don't think a gen is worth that kind of coin, and if you've already got some modded reps (of nicer variants of sub) a gen won't give you anything other than the ability to say 'Yes', if asked if it's real, and a warranty for the RSC, it wouldn't really 'be contributing anything' to the overall range of your collection. Of course, that's just my .2c YMMV ;)

  2. Already checked all the usual suspects (including MY) prior to posting.

The standard (black) Turn-o-graph (Sub style) dial can be had, but I have never seen this type. And it is mainly the dial (& dauphine hands) that makes this model so unique. So this project may sit on the back-burner until/unless I can come up with a dial.

Indeed, the dial's definitely the key ingredient... Possibly a custom commission required?

  3. My first rep was an EL Moonwatch that was Zigmeisterd and I loved it. However every time I saw a gen Speedy Pro in an AD I was drawn to it. Long story short I now have a gen Pre-Moon Speedy Pro from my birth year - '69. I rationalised my rep collection going for quantity not quality (all have now been to the Canadian Spa) and when the urge to buy a watch comes I've satisfied it with a Alpha! Yes I know the purists will be horrified, but hey what the hell, it's my money...

    Reps = 5

    Gens = 8

Awesome, how do you find they compare to the reps available?

  4. It appears so, but that happens with some dials & I know the watch is 100% gen.

Now, if I can just source a similar dial. :g:

Might it simply be an instance of the case and dial not originally being intended for use together, but the Powers That Be feeling that they were 'close enough' to use? It certainly looks good though :) Best of luck with sourcing the dial :good: Thinking about it, might MY be a possible source?

I think you'll have to commission one.

As for the clipped 'Swiss'... I believe that's just an illusion from the crystal...

Edit: On second look, that is the rehaut covering it...

    ;)

I wouldn't say I have the best eye for detail, but even a broken watch is right twice a day ;)

  5. I promised myself 'no more franken projects' (at least for awhile), but this albino 6202 Turn-o-graph is calling me

    6202albino.jpg

    Specifications

    Caliber - A.296 18kbph auto-wind

    Crystal - Tropic 10

    Crown - 5.3mm Twinlock 24-530

Bracelet - Expandable riveted 7206/80 (which I have en route from Yuki)

Anyone know of a source for a dial like this?

Very tasty :) Is it my imagination, maybe a trick of the light, or is the edge of the rehaut covering the lower half of the word 'Swiss'?

That'll certainly be an awesome project, I'll look forward to the progress and finished article :good:

  6. Gotta go to a Shine meeting this afternoon. In my company, Shine meeting is code for a meeting where we are just about to get a bunch of money from a new client. Either old RobbieG Shines, or we don't get the cash. This DJ has sort of evolved into a sort of lucky watch around here. I have never failed to Shine with it on. When I got sick and lost most of my gigantic ego (that tends to happen when the reaper shows up at your door)it occured to me that it just might be the watch that was responsible and not me at all. So may I present to you what may be the only reason I am able to make a living. Nothing Shines like Rolex metal...

I'm not sure if you'd seen the pictures, bro, but I treated Emily to one of those (and found myself re-building the movement and sending it back due to bracelet failure) and thought you might like to see what

  7. Such an awesome watch, thanks for sharing, bro :) My cheapie YM wasn't with me long enough, and is possibly the only watch I've owned lately, which I would replace with the same model. They dress up, they dress down, and the 3-D bezel insert is something which can only be appreciated in person :victory:

  8. OH Boy! A Dayachtmaster! Tell you what, I'll trade you my gen HorrormasterII for it!

    Col.

All joking aside, I really like the case/pushers of that watch :) Stick a Daytona movement/dial assembly in, with a set of Sub hands as the main hands, and a sub bezel insert, and you'd have the kind of bastardized watch I'd be proud to wear :victory:

  9. I can understand that 100%. I would love to build my own piece, I just do not have the time to research and collect all the pieces. I used to dedicate more time to this hobby. When I bought my rep. HBB, I tossed the Asian 7750 decaled rotor and replaced it with a ETA blank rotor that I had CNC machined out to the exact measurements of a gen. I must have spent over 2 weeks on at my CAD station measuring pictures of a gen rotor, and creating it to be machined out. After that I went after the winding bridge removing the decal and had the "H" CNC'd into the bridge. About 1 month of design and machine time I had a exact 1:1 copy of the rotor and bridge. After another month I had the movement torn apart and decorated to original. I enjoyed it greatly, now I have too many other hobbies taking up my time. Maybe I will get back into doing more mods one day. :drinks:

    I'm liking your style :drinks:

  10. I agree, although not in the same context as you.

I hold my franken built pieces in even higher regard than any of my gens. Anyone can go to an AD and buy a watch; to actually sit down, research and collect the gen parts needed, then put it all together myself and see it come to life and be able to wear my work knowing the time and effort put into the project... To me, that makes for a stronger sentimental connection than just throwing down cash at a dealer's cash register.

Yet another reason why I don't buy many gens these days...

Same here :) Just substitute the word 'gen' for 'reps' in my case :D

As you say, it's the satisfaction of building it yourself, that makes a much stronger connection than just making a purchase :)

  11. Thanks, TeeJay :) I agree- You can definitely see some family resemblance between these two!

Great watches everyone! Keep em coming!

Any time :) The case-sides and lugs are virtually identical :) I really like how the side of the case forms an integrated crown guard, as to be honest, that's something which I'm not over keen on with diver's watches. I know it's functional, but aesthetically speaking, I think the older no-guard subs look nicer, and those Omega cases combine the no-guard look, with CG functionality :victory:

  12. Hmm... there's something weird on that dial... can't put my finger on it. It's ok if the AD can verify the authenticity.

Or perhaps you'd like to trade?

This is older Daytona with El Primero movement. That's why the subdial spacing is different.

I know I shouldn't, but I love all those fake Roleys, just because the 'details are different' from the ones I see every day :D And as for the GMT II, that's like the one I wore in Tokyo :victory:

  13. That's exactly what I'm nervy of: screwing up stem removal! Any tips?

Planning to use servisol silicone grease: I can readily get hold of this. Sound ok?

I can't help you on the grease issue, as I've never greased any of my watches, but with the stem removal, it's just a case of gently depressing the button, rather than pushing it down hard :)
