  1. I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I had a cheap Silix no cg sub. I bought 4 1.3mm gold drill bits (don't know what material they were). I used one to do one hole using a 16v cordless drill at low speed and no lubrication. Went though slowly. Used the same bit for the second hole. Again, no problem. The third hole was problematic. I went through the remaining drill bits, with the last one breaking off at the tip, just before penetration. My supplier had no 1.3mm bits left, so I bought 2 1.6mm cobalt bits from local hardware store. I burned through them faster than the last three. Didn't even make the third hole. Being thoroughly frustrated, I went back to the store and bought 4 1.6mm HSS bits and a bottle of 3in1 oil. I took the bits to work and put one in the drill press. I lubed the bit with 3in1 and presto, 10 min. later 2 holes drilled.

I am happy with the results, have 3 bits left, and will be using the drill press from now on.

  2. All the dealer pics I have seen have been at multiple angles. If you carefully study all the pictures, then look at gens as well, that should solve problems. Scrutinize the pictures, ask the dealer(s) questions, and do your homework.

When I purchased my first rep, I studied all the pics, asked a lot of questions, and checked with genuines. I then read all the dealer/rep reviews I could. This is an industry where the customer has to do the legwork before they buy. You cannot expect perfection for a couple hundred bucks.

I think the dealers here are very exceptional and are excellent photographers. Where else can you find an honest business person in a dishonest industry?

  3. I recently received a 4th generation PO and an Asian 45mm PO from two seperate dealers. I haven't seen any comparisons yet, so I thought one might help if anyone hasn't purchased any yet.

There are a couple of differences on the dial. On the 45mm the dial looks nice and evenly spaced out, but the hour markers are smaller and the date wheel has the wrong font. The 42mm has the Omega logo close to the Omega script.

The crown on the 45mm is smaller and doesn't protrude out as far. The helium valve is also a little lower than where it should be. The bezel is raised more on the 42 than on the 45mm.

The casebacks on both of them are excellent. The 45mm does need a good polishing as machine marks are present. The 42 is just as stunning, but with the etched "Planet Ocean", not engraved like the 45mm.

The 45mm has the "old" style SMP bracelet with screws, not pins. It also has the etched logo and lettering, whereas the 42mm has the engraved lettering and the planet ocean also on it. The 42 also has the correct curved bracelet, which I like. There are pins to hold the links together. However, the finish of the bracelet wasn't as good.

I think both versions are a terrific deal for the money. I like both equally. If you aren't ready to spend the money on the 4th gen, this 45mm might be the way to go.

  4. First, a before pic...

I scratched my insert at the 3 o'clock position. So, I pm'ed some experts (thanks for all your help) and got some good advise. I went on ebay and purchased an aftermarket insert.

I first asked my wife for her nail file, but it was at her office :( . So, I opened up my Swiss Army knife keychain, and used that file. I filed down along the outside edge and then along the inside edge. I filed a little at a time, so as to not take too much off. I also kept test fitting the insert to the bezel. When the fit was perfect, I got out my contact cement and lightly dapped glue on the insert and bezel using a q-tip. After the pieces were mated together, I put my bezel back on.

    And voila...

A very easy and inexpensive upgrade. Picture quality not very good due to poor light in basement.

Next project on the 5513 will probably be some painting to the hands and hour markers.
