  1. It's worse than that. Thanks to these scumbags our whole community are seen as villains. This despite the fact that the vast majority of members are scrupulously honest in their descriptions, probably more so than sellers of genuine watches which are not original, and would under value a sale rather than scam.

Replicas have been around for ages, even the big auction houses like Christies and Philips sell repainted dials, custom cases and whatevs. And i dont mean only rolexes. I think the problem with vintage watch collecting is that people are too naive and think this hobby is something you can buy yourself into. Thats not the way it works. Those people are going to be scammed sooner or later.

  2. Yes I did that on my 6538 too. You can buy nice hands on JKHOROLOGICAL. Same as Clark's Tudor but for half the price and shipped in a week.

Thx! Gilt hands were rarely used on 5513s but i love the gilt on gilt effect :) have never tried jkhorologicals hands, maybe we need a new comparison? :)

  3. yes, not hard to apply either. stick the hands opening on a tooth pick upside down and apply. build up the layers gradually allowing for time to dry. if you accidentally get paint somewhere you dont want you can gently use the broad end of the toothpick to peel it away even when dry. just dont use sandpaper as it will reveal the brass underneath.

heres the iodine and bake treatment i used on this MBW 5513 many years ago. applied to hands and markers.

couldnt find a pic of the enamel paint relume ive done before but i was way more satisfied with the outcome of acrylic paint than the iodine one.

to give you an idea of what the acrylic ivory paint would look like heres a terrible relume job i did to this dial. YEAH I ALREADY SAID IT WAS BAD. first attempt ever. just picture the texture and color on the hands and no outside the lines.

Thx for the info buddy! Im testing a 24% vinegar and salt solution now, will post some images later

  4. Mini sand blaster.... Basically an air brush loaded with micro glass beads in the top hopper.

Very nice result indeed, much better than the matte varnish imho. Can the sand blaster be used on cases too? Would be it be possible to use it with bigger beads to get those small holes on the case?

I've actually already lightly blasted it with micro glass beads to remove the garish sheen and creating a more favorable texture.

As for the hands, they still have the original tritium and was something I bus had lying around.

I've already taken it apart and will shape the lug tip profile over the next little while.

Dbane, could you please describe the process of blasting with marco glass beads? What tools are you using for that?

  6. iodine +toaster oven

OR remove the old lume with acetone or isopropyl then just relume with ivory acrylic paint. gives a nice texture, no glow, and an aged color

    i prefer the latter method

Thx! So basically, paint can be used instead of lume?

  7. Doesn't everybody?

Heyyyyyyy maybe that explains it!! :bangin:

In all seriousness I've used crema from espresso and painted it onto hands to get a very nice effect. Apply the foam and leave it to collapse and migrate to the edges.

    Thx for the tip!

  8. To the anti gunners...

While gun ban advocates fret and ring their hands about guns...how many guns were used in the 911 attacks?

While gun ban advocates fret and ring their hands about guns...how many guns are involved when thousands of people are killed each year by drunk drivers? Compare people killed by drunk drivers to people who die because of guns...then look at the people who were saved by guns and compare it to the people who were saved by drunk drivers.

    To the people in charge...

Why not take a close look at the loonies who carry out these attacks? It's not like they live in a vacuum and no one knows about their beliefs and activities. The Orlando shooter had been spouting off for 10 years and the Feds knew about it and did nothing. Who are you going to blame that on? Oh, I get it...blame the guns he used.

I know about guns. I've owned quite a few, took them apart, put them back together, am a very good shot. I've been shot at twice and had a gun pulled on me once. I live in the real world...unlike a 'Ban the Guns' whiner that never gets out of the house but wants everyone's legal guns taken away. Otoh I am not a 'concealed carry' or 'make my day' advocate but agree with the right of a sane person to 'carry if necessary'.

It's the loonies I am worried about.

What does it take to get a gun licence in the states?
