  1. ...and to assert an air of manliness (in my best Rocky Balboa voice) 'Hey Vickeee whats UP! ' Unless Vbarret happens to be a man with very feminine hands, in which case, please disregard.

Not another gay thread, have mercy! ;)

You called? If you want advice, you can't have come to a finer gentleman than Sssurfer. I would follow his counsel slavishly. Never bought a PAM from Silix, sticking only to his Rolexes, so my input would be minimal alas.

  2. David emailed me and I have to email him some pictures of my watch, probably to show him the mistake on the back is not that small and is worth being replaced.

Don't worry, he made me do the same thing. Par for the course. :)

When i get home from work tonight I'll make some pictures and post them here also.

That would be most helpful, for future member research!

Hehe well guess the obligatorily 6 years of lingua latina lessons wasnt a waste of time after all ;)

I commend my fellow Latinist, and hope you also had the Cambridge Latin Course, sharing in Caecilius and Metella's fun stories. ;)

  3. This isn't being cheap, it's being shrewd! Cheap, as this discussion implies, is buying a $120 replica Submariner when you could buy a genuine with the cash in your pocket. Cheap is buying a 1972 Fiat when you could easily afford a new R8 for every day of the week. By and large, rich people don't do this and as such, aren't 'cheap'.

I think nouveau riche people may not do this, but the people I know certainly do.

Gentry in the UK don't buy new sheets, or counterpanes/bedspreads. They send theirs out to be mended, year after year, decade after decade. The Queen hasn't bought a new Land Rover since the 1970s. The Daimlers date to the late 40s.

The famous story of Mrs. Nancy Reagan arriving in a spiffy black shiny limo, with police outrider escort, only to meet the Queen emerging from a muddy, old Land Rover which she had driven herself, is still remembered in the UK.

There is a difference. I stand by my conviction that rich people are the cheapest people on earth. Doesn't mean they can't be Bill Gates and donate a billion to UNICEF.

But Steve Jobs is a horrible tipper and rarely pays for his own bill, leaving it to whomever is his lunch partner to do so. That's the kind of thing I'm talking about.

That's my mum all over, bless her. This is why I overtip, in compensation for my parents' UTTER UTTER cheapskateness.

What does a rich man get for buying his chauffeur a coffee? Nothing of any value. So making him pay for his own isn't cheap, it's simply a choice.

    :omg:

    Wow. What can one say?

EDIT: OH! BTW, another Queen anecdote. She once came upon a couple of footmen in a huge, brightly-lit room in Buckingham Palace, having a hearty chat. She stared at them, harrumphed, and turned off the lights in their face.

Hey, she's a child of the Great Depression and the War. But man is she cheap. In her case, since we're paying, good on her!

  4. Dluddy, that La Spezia is JUST amazing. Got mine on Monday, but your patina kills mine. How long will it take to get that patina?

I'll even put it more frequently on my strap rotation, to get it to "age" to that brilliant brick red colour. Hope V pipes up too!

Great shot, thanks! GO SOX! ...but fair play to the Tribe too. :)

@Tom Riddle: My word what a keen eye you have then!

  5. FRIDAY

    SATURDAY

Okay, so do you remember that scene in Casino Royale, when Bond has to chase after the baddie from the Bahamas to Miami? Minute 41:37 in the DVD. See that building with the ridges to the left?

    casinodowntownpg2.jpg

Check it out! We call it the Wedding Cake. :thumbsupsmileyanim:

    centrusttowertp9.jpg

Problem is, that's not QUITE the route to Miami Beach, as shown in Casino Royale. This is the way!

MF make SIMPLE, elegant straps which don't feel like you have a cow on your wrist (6.5mm, WTF ammo straps?!).

@RXUS: Thanks so much! I was excited during the BoSox-Tribe game, so I had to find something to do at the end. Catch you when you wake up, neighbour. :)

  7. Since the ALCS is still going on, and the World Series is coming soon, here is a general Wristie-thread for you baseball fans!

Me, watching Bobby Kielty of the Boston Red Sox, at the plate. Poor lighting in my library/comp room!

TWP PAM 217 on Greg Stevens Crazy Horse with antique stitching. :)

  8. Ok guy's and gal.. I got a little carried away with the "thought' .. yes VB we are on the same page.. but don't let that stop you from bringing out the leather whip

    *brings out the cat'o'nine-tails*

back to the Games.. Sox... South Florida

Ooh, weird play with David Ortiz, eh? Says the girl wearing the Fiddy with the Greg Stevens Crazy Horse strap. GAY!

  9. I went to public school too. That notwithstanding, I have so far displayed a stauch unblemished record of studly heterosexuality. Still, when I think back on my Westminster days, the cold showers and buggery brings a nostalgic tear to my eye....

Character building, The Mentalist, never forget. Every cold shower was another callous of pain of experience, and it's what made Britain great.

Just don't even mention "fagging" to Americans...hoo boy!

  10. Ms Barratt is quite correct. This whole thread has been conducted in a spirit of levity. Political correctness is often such a killjoy and whilst we can appreciate the more sensitive aspects of sexuality discussion, we also need to be able to poke fun. I've got nothing against gays, hell, I don't think anyone should as everyone has at least one gay cousin, right? When my cousin Dave came out, his parents were so shocked and surprised. I don't know why, since he sported a 'manbag' and had an unusually voracious appetite for Judy Garland since the age of about 12...

    :p

Strangely enough, no one on either side of my family is gay (I mean, outwardly!).

However, almost all of the British cousins have been to boarding school, including yours truly. Are you telling me that someone, somewhere didn't play hide the sausage afterhours in the Winchester College gym, once? Come on! Of course they did!

And what's more...many of them wore Rolexes too, SO THERE!

PS. I still think Panerai's are about as 'ginger beer' as you can get.

Just in case Simple English-needing foreign-speakers didn't understand , that's Cockney rhyming slang for queer.

You know what I like? That gay people have reclaimed "queer" and made it into a positive, like Queer Studies. YES! That's the way to do it, baby! Stick it to us!

  11. Yes, but that's utter crap and everyone knows it. :D

No, it's not Puggers! The richest people are the cheapest people on earth. They will diddle you for 10p, if they can, and bargain you down for anything.

Just because they can go inside a building and buy it, doesn't mean they won't, as Rose Kennedy used to do, try to get her deposit back on nail varnish bottles at Woolworth's.

Or make her chauffeur pay for his own coffee.

Rich people are cheap. As my mum says, maybe that's why they're rich and we're not...

  12. It's not actually "material" VB ... the topic (for me) epitomizes the "I want it all metallity" so if I bore you with it sooorrrryyy .. I will probably use it again if I choose :D .. so pardon the repetitiveness of my posts.. ;) .. I actually wasn't counting..

Lanikai! So far this thread has been pretty okay, considering the volatile topic, talked about amongst grown up MEN of all people. No one has been flat out disgusting.

    Suddenly I see Anton saying it's an all-out flame-war?

Maybe on Mars, because for the internet, this ain't no flame-war. By any stretch of the imagination.

So don't misunderstand my words, Lanikai, please. They were for sure, as you could tell by my followup Elizabeth Taylor crack, said in jest. :)

We on the same page now, or am I gonna have to don my Dominatrix outfit for you again?

P.S.: Lanikai, I surely am sorry about your family having been interned. My family suffered too. We all suffered in so many ways, throughout the centuries, with or without labels. But words are human. It's how we talk to each other. No one here is going from "your watch is gay!" to "I will ban you because you're gay". I know you had a very nice reminder for us, to use caution when using words, but touching on controversial topics shouldn't be verboten anywhere.

When we stop talking about things, it's when we have to worry as a human race.

  13. I just received an email from Davidsen with pics on the Fiddy that he is replacing. Please take a look and tell me if this is ok. I appreciate your help and feedback.

First, the engraving looks flawless. A mite worried about the cannon pin. The second photo looks a bit recessed, but not in the first.

EDIT: I would ask him for a better Crown Guard in general. That "dimple" is a dead giveaway, I'm afraid. Looks exactly like the first Fiddy's I received...so I hope there's no funny business going on there (IOW, he's still using the same parts of my "old" Fiddy).

I saw Estaban's commentary about the Crown being too far away, but DSN's replacement Fiddy had the opposite problem. The CG was too close, and the crown wouldn't pop out enough. Took a local watchsmith to canabalise the two, to make it work.

BTW, just as a point of interest, here are the photos of the second Fiddy Davidsen sent me, like he did with your second.

  14. Oh, have you told your friends they disgust you?

    ;)

Pick a side and stay there. We can do this all day.

Ahem, I'm not Hambone (at least not today), but I think most straight men don't hate the gay person. They hate the sexual realities of being gay. I think Hambone said as much when he mentioned the reaming and the BJs. ()

But why am I telling a guy that? Guys know what it is about gay men they cannot stand, if such is the case!

  15. I think that the smaller the case diameter, the more gay the watch becomes. Pink and light blue dials are also a sign of gayness. I have a friend that has a watch with both attributes. I don't know the name, but it was the gayest watch I have ever seen. The case diameter was about 35. It had a baby blue dial. I said "nice watch, does it come in men's? He got a little upset. You should not wear a watch that you would be willing to let your daughter wear. I don't talk to my friend much anymore. I keep wondering if it is because of the watch, but it's probably because we are so busy all the time.

I posted this in the Celebs wearing Panerai thread, as an adjunct photo.

    trumanid3.jpg

That pretty much covers your criteria.

@The Mentalist: BTW, I saw my first Miami-Smart car the other day! People were gawking and staring. All I kept thinking was, if they get into an accident with the SUVs we have here (and Florida is ALL about the SUV), they're toast. Poor things.

  16. i am starting to wonder about my 183.....but it looks so good with my tutu.

Oy! When Mikhail Baryshnikov defected from the Iron Curtain, he nailed every woman in the West, including Jessica Lange, Jessica Tandy, and Jessica Fletcher!

Unfortunately, he has really bad taste in watches. Movado, Misha? Say it ain't so!

    baryshnikovxb6.jpg

(Yeah, sorry guys. Not a fan. Movado is gay)

  17. Vbarret, that is very fascinating...but with a watch like THAT, I'd not be surprised that it got passed around so much. Seems like everyone wanted to get rid of it. Even the original... I don't know...

It's FUGLEE. Whether gen or rep, so yes, I think your idea is right. :)

But ahem.. no...The copper didn't make a pass at me in the shower... we passed each other in the parking lot, but yes, nice try. ;) I like women... but who's to know if he does... right... anyways...

WHAT! Not ANOTHER gay thread on RWG.

(Just like the "take a bullet" remark, it was meant half-in-jest, Viennawatch. Always remember to read my statements with a pinch of salt. Or in this case, a camel hump's full). ;)

@Freddy: Ooh, Triumph TR5 (not yours specifically). Best sports car ever? Ah well, another thread, another time, Freddy!
