  1. Needless to say in nanny-land they gave the [censored] an O.B.E. !!!

    .

What, no way? Seems I left my homeland just in time...

(No, she got it when I was still there. Just recalled)

We seem to delight in rewarding busybodies like Mary Whitehouse and Chrissie Maher with OBEs. Whitehouse at least could be mocked. Mock Maher, and you're the equivalent of Dr. Crippen because of the PC-brigade. <_<

I'm all for speaking plain English, but Plain English is as bad as nonsensical officialese.

When it becomes mandatory to the point of destroying the origins of the English tongue (such as calls for restructuring its spelling), I rue the day I wasn't born French.

It would never OCCUR to them to have a Simple French Wikipedia equivalent, since they revere their tongue, preserve its origins, and if foreign-speakers can't master it, tough merde.

They even have the Academie Fran

  2. Wow, those are really varied results... Out of curiousity, for the first shot, was the lume still being exposed to the UV light?

    No, not at all. :)

I went to the en suite toilet, which has no window, and shone the torch for about 1 minute. Turned off the torch, and took a quick photo in complete darkness. Same procedure with the bottom photo.

Was it a UV bulb used to reveal 'invisible' security markers, or was it a definite 'black light' bulb (not sure what, if any difference there is, but bear with me...)

Let me try to show you a photo of the torch I bought (on eBay). What you wrote is a bit too techy for me. :)

EDIT: Oops, not 140 UV lightbulbs. Just 41!

"UV 41 LEDs light burn life of around 100000 hours

2 modes of operation: Press on/off button ONCE - 21 LED mode / Press on/off button TWICE - 41 LED mode

    Aluminium body

    Ideal as a pocket flashlight

    Can act as money detector

    Twist for constant on/off

Powered by 4 x AAA batteries (not included)

    Size: 143 x 53mm"

I used mode number 2, the one with the most lightbulbs.

    Looks exactly like this:

    PICT0986.JPG

When I used a 'UV Revealing' bulb, I got a powerfull green effect, as shown previously. If, however, I put a watch near a 'black light' bulb, (like in a novelty shop) then I had the same blue/green result as you saw, but, it only lasted while the lumes were directly bathed in the 'black light', once they were back in normal light, they just had the strong green glow... Very interesting results indeed :) You might like my new wrist shot which I'm about to post ;)

    Hmm! Interesting interesting, indeed.

And yes, I saw your wonderful Fiddy. GORGEOUS! Shame it has to go back, but there you are. The usual rep watch owner merry-go-round.

@All who replied with info: THANKS! I begin to understand why the variations occured. Any more first-hand info would be lovely.

  3. I've been wearing pink shirts for years, and still prefer the company of women :D Some say it takes a Real Man to wear a pink shirt. In a film, one guy specifically wears a pink shirt as an excuse to get into fights if someone makes fun of it

    WELCOME BACK TEEJAY!! :)

Now that I am better, I can get you those straps. I'll PM you by this evening my time, to sort things out. Hope you enjoyed yerself!

P.S.: Oh, never mind about the pink shirt. Do you wear women's sunglasses? That's the bit I don't like in today's mens, as the Wayans Bros. used to say.

  4. Good lord... Vlad the Impaler put his place up for sale? I sure didn't see THAT one coming.

    World's Most Expensive Homes

I just clicked on the link, so I'm not sure this is to what is referred in the article, Nanuq. But I THINK you are talking of Castelul Bran (Castle Bran)? Okay, yes, just saw it.

It's an interesting story, and it allows me to name-drop again. :D

I have a History degree with a concentration in Nazi Era Film/Eastern European history. So, when I was working on my thesis, I interviewed the current owner of Castle Bran, Archduke Dominic of Austria-Hungary (of the cadet, Toscana branch). His mother inherited the castle from her mother, the vivacious Queen Marie of Romania.

When the Iron Curtain came down, the Archduke successfully sued to have his mother's Castle returned to the family, and the Romanian government acquiesced (part of which was the reason for the interview). They even gave the ex-King, still living in Switzerland, a quasi-official ceremonial position, very laudably. He is the lone survivor of ALL the Heads of States during WWII. Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, Horthy, De Gaulle -- all dead, only he remains.

But unfortunately, this Castle, though not huge, is very difficult to keep up without enormous amounts of money which the family do not have anymore. The Archduke himself has a rundown home in Venice, which he is reconstructing with his own hands. A very expensive endeavour in and of itself.

So I went there there, got the tour from the chap himself (very nice, BTW, speaks perfect English since he was brought up near Boston, in exile), and found it creepy, but not as much as I anticipated considering the Vlad connexion. :)

Now it's up for sale as you can see, but I think the Romanian government should buy it back and turn it into what it was, a museum.

Not sure that is going to happen, since the moneys simply aren't there.

The other royal Palace returned to the Royal Family (there are several), Cotroceni, was inhabited for years by the ex-Soviet puppets, including of course, the Ceauşescus. It's reverted to the King himself. I'm sure that won't be on the market any time soon, though.

P.S.: The other two interesting links are the Pierre Penthouse, and that home in Cap Ferrat. Curiously, they were at one point both inhabited by Aristotle Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy (though it doesn't say that on the link, but it doesn't have to. I know). ;)

  5. How would you have written the article, knowing the constraints of Simple English?

I used to be an English-as-a-Second-Language instructor, with an emphasis on advanced Business English. Yeah, that's right. I taught Japanese businessmen how to make nice with rich Americans and Brits. And was I was damn good too.

So if there is anyone on this board who knows how to make themself understood in simple, clear, but INTERESTING English it is Ryyannon...who is AWOL. :(

And dammit, I'm sad. He would've been all over this thread, with insouciant replies about Regine and perhaps some French techno dancing too.

(Yes, I used insouciant, but I presume YOU don't need Simple English. Maybe Simple French? :p)

@Ryyannon: LOL! Bad spelling. You're so ironical. FREAK!

  6. Simple English on Wikipedia is there for those people that don't have the vocabulary of a native speaker. I applaud the initiative as it allows beginners in English to use parts of the internet normally too complex to understand.

I knew someone was going to reply about the poor, half-starved (implied), overworked (implied), illegal (not implied but bloody well often true) non-native English speaking people who might otherwise have died without knowing who Rene Rivkin was, if not for the good offices of Simple English Wikipedia.

And that he was sad when he was put in gaol/jail.

And that his dog Spot was sad too. And that made him sad.

    Oh, give me a break.

It has nothing to do with simple English, but the utter brain-dead quality of the telling of the "story".

If only I had time to alter these Simple English entries on Wikipedia, I'd put that entry so right, even your weeping heart full of mercy and humanity towards these poor confused non-Anglophones, would applaud me!!

Unfortunately, I cannot take time off from my busy Rep Watch forum replying. :p

    I'm sad.

  7. Offshore's post on the passing of Rene Rivkin made me Wiki him for the date of death. 2005. Wow, I'm behind the times.

Here's the Wiki entry for Rene Rivkin, in case of interest:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rene_Rivkin

But what did my eyes spy, to the lower left of the page, where foreign language entries are usually labelled "French", "German", even "Esperanto" sometimes, but "Simple English".

    Simple English?

Here's what it says, in toto:

    http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rene_Rivkin

Rene Rivkin (6 June 1944 - 1 May 2005) was an Australian man who made lots of money by buying stocks and shares on the Australian stockmarket. Rene Rivkin had his own television show and magazine to help people to make money. One day police said that Rene Rivkin had cheated to make money out of the stock market. Rene Rivkin got very sad. Rene Rivkin was put in jail. While Rene Rivkin was in jail, Rene Rivkin killed himself. Before killing himself, Rene Rivkin said on a television show called "Enough Rope" with Andrew Denton that if he went to jail he would kill himself. Andrew Denton has said that he is very sad about this.

"One day police said that Rene Rivkin had cheated to make money out of the stock market. Rene Rivkin got very sad." ... "Andrew Denton said he was very sad about this"?

What? This is "See D1ck and Jane Run" type of storyline!

My God, talk about the dumbing down of culture in general. Simple English, indeed.

Wikipedia is ALREADY the dumbed down version of the Encyclop

  8. VB, you could not be more wrong. It has nothing to do with men finding being gay as a sign of weakness it is simply that most straight men find it flat out repulsive to even consider having another mans [censored] in their mouth or ass. Thats what it is about, Who made you an authority on the male psyche?, or is just penis envy taking hold?

I was trying to be decent, and this is the thanks I get?! ;)

    No, seriously.

I realise there's a physicality that is repulsive to straight men (frankly, a little bit to me too), but the physicality images are not present when you are growing up. It's in those crucial childhood years that boys are taught that weakness is female. As they grow up, they equate that with effeminate gay men.

Wait, this thread is about ghetto watches, no wait that's another thread! Arrgh, too much gay on RWG. I think Chieftang was right. We should have a gay button. In pink. :)

  9. For those who don't know of Rene Rivkin...

First, didn't know he had passed on. Thanks for the info (yeah, even I don't read everything online).

Secondly, wow, what a collection! I'm a bit stunned by it.

It got off to a great start. Audemars Piguet. A little too much gold, but a fine timepiece, all the same.

    Then, this.

    undeuxcorumsx5.jpg

Oy. And I thought I was pretentious.

    jorghysektl3.jpg

Wow, I have one of Jorg Hysek's pens. Watch is OKAY. Wannabe Bvlgari, with shades of Mont Blanc.

    hpcwsf5.jpg

But this?? Look at the red underlined part. Well, that's nice. Nerdy and you can't fix it. I see Bill Gates gunning for it.

    berne1914an5.jpg

At least the auction ends on a good note. Not the gen movement, but a nice vintage watch all the same.

I'll bid a looney. Wait, that's Canadian money.

  10. So I had quite a good day at the gym. I went to the changing room, showered, got changed

    *daydreams*

    Sorry, where we again?

It was even in British Racing Green. That dark green color. Ohh, I just got goosebumps.

British Racing Green MG. The car my parents had when I was born.

    MGBChanen1.JPG

You know what they say, if it doesn't leak, it's not British.

However then something occurred to me. Why the hell was the seconds sub dial ticking like a quartz?!?!? Thats when I realized it was a fake; from my knowledge this watch isn't produced with a quartz movement at all. BIG BIG shock.. I started to doubt the Range Rover. Must have been some cheap chinese knock off as well!

I'm sure it was. Check Trevor's Store. I think I saw him advertising a Range Rover for $499.99. SHIPPED!!!

So that was my wonderful story for the day.... I hope I live long enough to witness something like this again! Makes me even scarier to be in the rep scene, as we may have cops who REALLY know what they are dealing with in the replica world... Maybe cops will come over, who'll then confiscate my two outdated watches and wear them for themselves? You never know....

    Haha

    Great story.

But here's a wrinkle. Let me tell you a story too, this time with no name-dropping ON MY PART. Strange but true.

On another forum, there was this chap who was selling a Breitling for Bentley watch. I hope he's not reading this, but it was an ugly-ass watch. Ooh, mama, mercy. FUGLEEE.

It was all golded, and oversized, and the hash marks were all red and nasty. FUGLEEE.

Anyway -- long story short for once, turns out he was a sports agent, and some famous American sports personalities had used this very watch, since he had bought it for one famous player, who not surprisingly declined to wear it.

    The second guy, too.

Finally, a very famous QB's backup wore it around for a while, before he too ixnayed the watch.

    Now my question to you,

  11. This is awesome service. I will post the pics once he sends them to me for all of you to see and advise me of it's quality and accuracy. Because of how Davidsen has handled this situation, I will continue to buy from him.

Everything you said above is exactly how he handled my situation.

He constructed the new Fiddy from scratch for me (instead of possibly taking it from his pre-made stocks), and sent me photos, apologising for having such a crappy Canon. I posted the photos here to get others' opinions, and they all said it was cosmetically flawless.

I also got a nice new Paneari leather keyring, and other stuff, for my bothers, in addition to the items I had already requested in compensation.

This took me completely by surprise, and though you may think it's a little thing, I liked his thoughtfulness and generosity a lot.

    Good luck, Jawo!

  12. Silix' 027 @ 80 USD is a bang. I got two of them.

Thanks, Sssurfer! For both of us. I'll get one too. :)

Now, do we have a sticky for people who ask these types of questions? Pugwash, why don't you write a Sticky about which cheap PAMs are out there or best bang for buck, etc.?

I just pointed out your Navitimer review to someone, since I must get around 5 PMs like this per week, and that was 100x better than anything I could do. You're da man! And yes, I am humping your leg a bit.

  13. where is the gay and lesbian parade then? I think we can gather a few people in the forum to be in that parade. Am I pretty? ;););)

Lose the moustache, and we'll talk. ;)

(Guys, please remember that we may have gay male members of the forum. I know for certain there is a lesbian member of the forum, and it can't be easy to read these threads. All in good fun though, I hope they realise that!)

    @Sssurfer: LOL!

  14. Please post your pics, comments, mini review or pride/displeasure with your low priced PAM here.

    No. :p

Seriously, you are asking a lot when a brief look over the entire Panerai area would answer a lot of your questions! Try from July to August. BAM, in that time alone you have two of my posts commenting on how awful the two cheapo PAMs I bought from Paul/Wo-Mart were. U$99 shipped. What did I expect? Well, I got crap, is what I got.

To any newbie, ANY, I would say, go with Andrew's PAM 111h. Still at the old price I paid for $158 (not including shipping):

    http://www.trustytime88.com/index.php?main...;products_id=94

Real sapphire crystal. Nice sized crown. Good font dial. Half-way decent lume. He even includes a rubber strap deployant for free, if asked, and not those leather monstrosities Paul sent me (in fairness, all rep straps are nasty, save Davidsen's).

This is the second time today I've mentioned Andrew, one privately, and I have to tell you, IMHO, he's the best. Full stop.

  15. Planning to get my lady friend a rep.....

The choice is either a Cartier Roadster (Quartz) or Rolex Pearlmaster Datejust ETA. Can anyone offer an opinion? Which is closer to the original?

Oops, didn't see this in my RWG haste.

Bing-o, go with what Corgi said -- Roadster all the way. Go to the Cartier official site and compare it A LONG time before getting whatever version is out there. There are many.

It's not on my own radar, but you never know...I'm getting La Do

  16. Tell that to Heidi Klum (the future Mrs Doc :D)

Did Kelster really say that? Brit + German no go together?

Someone tell my parents!! A 6'4" British dude and a 5'2" German gal produced a crazy watch obsessed kid, FYI!

And yeah, sure, DBR. You know I'm the only model you want. Got the PAM already.
