  1. What great publicity for Cheese Doritos!

I've never had Cheese Doritos. Does that make me a birdbrain? Don't answer that!

This story reminds me of the recent death of that African Grey parrot, Alex, who allegedly had the IQ of a 5 year-old child, which included knowing colours and differentiating shapes; he learned more than 100 English words; and had a series of one-liners he delivered to his captive audience.

    Sounds like Gilbert Godfrey...

Not sure if I read this here, or when surfing the net, but the research scientists who had taught him all he knew were devastated.

I say we all club together, and buy them a ticket to Aberdeen. B)

  2. We had an excellent dinner at Simon & Seaforts in Anchorage...

Chowhound here I come! Sounds like the Smith & Wollensky's of fish. :)

Thanks my friend for the gift of the Rolex GMT and the Gen Dial to accompany it...

Nanuq seems like one of the most laid-back, kindly members on here. The mod staff certainly are one of the best I've ever seen, you too TT.

  3. Thanks Victoria! Point taken. You are the one when it comes to straps! Will go think which strap to get for a start...though I must say there are easily a handful of nice ones...tough choice tough choice...

PM in case of questions, when you've narrowed your choices! I get PMs at least 2 or 3 times a week with these questions, and I'm always happy to oblige. :)

  4. My gf is very small and the bracelet fits great, but the it won't fit to any normal sized Caucasian lady.

Oh wow, thanks for that! I thought it was me...the Tag Heuer I showed was tighter than usual. Whilst I bought it a long time ago, I'm not THAT much bigger than I used to be, but momentarily it had crossed my mind I had put on at least a stone. :(

Wish I had a link to give, but my TT Tag Link is so rusty, it would be a disgrace. Sorry.

  5. (*mental note....hmmm, sunny weather, communal pool with agency models lounging round all day, VB's PAM collection, :whistling:)

*starts to type in "www.ba.com/flights/miami interna.....*

Do you have access to FashionTV? Well, my parents watch it disturbingly frequently (it's like their favourite channel...), and though both are fashion-plates, I did find out it's because they sometimes spot one of our neighbours there.

"That's the girl from the third floor. Nice Valentino gown." (mum)

    "No, from Penthouse." (dad)

I'm just hoping he means the top floor. *g*

P.S.: I do know Caroline Trentini was staying in the condo next door, perhaps for an extended shoot. I saw her myself.

P.P.S.: Apropos to the thread, fashion models in SoBe are almost exclusively into Rolexes. They love Subs.

  6. That's what I thought was interesting about it  While I'd be the first to admit that radical Islamic terrorism is a problem, articles like that make me wonder if terrorism hasn't become 'the new communism'...

Or the new Christian white trash guy. Both hated by oh many people...

@Topic: I stopped subscribing to the NYT, a subscription I had held since the age of 16 as a birthday present, in June 2002. I just couldn't take their "neutral" BS stories any more. After that time, millions have followed suit. Their latest tactic to bring up subscriptions is that they target condos with "freebie" copies of their mammoth Sunday edition, hoping you might get hooked that way. Pass.

    Quote from article:

"So it comes down to us. If we stop knowingly buying fakes, the supply chain will dry up and counterfeiters will go out of business. The crime syndicates will have far less money to finance their illicit activities and their terrorist plots. And the children? They can go home."

You know how people stopped sweatshop labour by children in the US? By muckraking journalists like Jakob Riis. He published a series of photographs in the late 1800s in the US, and suddenly, this practise which EVERYONE knew went on, was brought out for the ugly thing it was.

One day, Riis looks up from his desk and sees a distinguished New York alderman, and one of the scions of the great NY society families looking down at him. The man puts down his cane, gloves and hat on Riis' desk and says quietly,

"I'm Theodore Roosevelt. I want to help."

He later wrote a great book on him, this Socialist who became friends with this Republican President. His preface read:

"Of the President I am proud with reason, but the friend I love. And if I can make you see him so, as a friend and a man, I have given you the master-key to him as statesman as well. You will never need to ask any questions."

Concerned citizens of China, not concerned multinationals of the world are the ones who will stop child labour.

Don't pass the buck to counterfeiters, people. Solve your systemic problems first. And get better politicians who take personal responsibility for your malaise.

  7. are you tanfoglio's gf?...

    I don't even think Tanfo knows I exist! ;)

just with a love towards straps?...I still cannot believe that someone has that number of straps..there are two options...that each one cost 1$ or that you robbed some of the strap dealers...

Half of the straps, well maybe not quite half, but a lot were used. In great condition, but used. And I am TOUGH bargainer.

I think that neither one strap dealer has on stock that number...

    Heh. Maybe.

congrats miss V...I knew that the first appearance of a serious women collector will bring to this...2-3 months of collecting and 16+ PAMs and who knows how many other watches....130 + straps...

nobody can compete (not that we are competing - just my lack in english language - miss the right word) with a women ( impulsive buyer) in shopping!

I think V has a lot more, and more importantly, better quality straps than I do! He's a true connoisseur.

I'm, right now, just an enthusiast. But thanks for the kind words (I think!). ;)

  8. That World Wide language would be ENGLISH and not Esperanto or even chinese....

I'm partial, but I just don't see any other language taking over anytime soon. English, despite our spelling idiosyncracies, is SO easy grammatically, it's almost a joke compared to Spanish.

How is Chinese going to take over, if Mandarin speakers spend YEARS learning their BASIC ideogrammes at school?

Bismarck said that the United States of America choosing English over German as their cultural language was the single-most important factor in geopolitics for the future.

    And he was totally right.

EDIT: When I say choose, I'm not talking of this oft-repeated canard: http://www.snopes.com/language/apocryph/german.asp

  9. Here's a little more info. I would prefer anything from light brown to dark brown leather straps except for black color ones. And by the way I pretty much like the look of those distressed leather straps. Do they wear and tear easily? Or is there anything I should take note of for distressed leather straps?

Alant, perhaps you are not getting as many replies, because as you know, you have to hit Search first, then ask.

  10. She doesn't like my PAM's (GEN or REP) seeing as how she is TINY. (as in my Rolex pieces look huge on her).

I'm small too, but as has been noted, it's all about body style and presence in carrying off certain watches. What's most important is that SHE feel comfortable -- and if she doesn't feel comfortable with Rolexes, then she won't with PAMs.

Other than my HBB Aspen suggestion, which has the added benefit of being available in the larger size (as I wore it), or a smaller size (which TeeJay's fianc

  11. Ach I knew that, not quick enough though.

Ack, I was sleeping and couldn't show off my historical knowledge for a change.

    But who doesn't know that??

It's one of those cultural facts you learn alongside Marco Polo brought noodles from China and Catherine the Great died enjoying relations with her horse.

  12. Any comments?

I'm sure a lot of people can't help, because we can't see the exact pic.

When I looked it up just now, it had this photo of an OEM strap. Not like the one you describe.

    post-6973-1191014830_thumb.jpg

If I had to GUESS, I would say it's the OEM Cashmere. We had a recent related discussion about this, on the Orlando Bloom Fiddy thread.

If there is ANY way you can post the pic, that would help. :)

  13. So whats on your fine wrists today lads?

    <_<

    :p

    FRIDAY

Okay, so I have an unsightly rash on my forearms, and wrists. Ixnay on the live shots for 2 weeks. Here are some photos I've been saving for a rainy day -- and it doesn't get rainier than this... DSN PAM 112 on that Zeugma straw-coloured strap I love! B)

I'll be going up a tree having to stay home for 2 weeks, so what better than the PAM 177h on that Maxmilian Toscana Amber strap? ;)

    SUNDAY

I'll be home watching the the Women's World Cup Final, hopefully watching Marta score another amazing goal versus the Gerries, wearing my PAM 177h on Toscana Fiero strap.

P.S.: Nice going, Greg Ryan. Hope you Scurry back home soon...

  14. Hello Vbarrett:

Oh hey Raymond! I'm glad I scrolled down again, since I didn't see your two posts!

Last week, I found many peoples (included 2 ladies) wearing their Panerai keep showup in front of me. After that; my head keep telling me ..... "I need a black panerai" . As one of my target "IWC Conteaus Diver 2007" released; I need to choose whether I should get "IWC" or "Panerai". :g: (Painfully..Not Both)

BTW; any recommedation? I want a black one, Superlumed, Sandwich Dial, SS or Titainum. Beside DSN 111H; any model I should go for?

You would look perfect with the 005. :)

It doesn't have the fancy "exposition case" to show the movement, so I don't know if that's a consideration with you. But the mosca (logo) on it, is just meant for you (like me), Raymond!

However, please check with the real PAM experts like Lanikai, Sssurfer, et al to see if DSN's latest 005 incarnation is accurate dial-wise.

They say his first efforts are to be avoided...but eventually, they're almost perfect.

-- I got mine from TWP, who is modding it. Can't wait! --

However, you say you can't get both. Well, you always say that, and eventually you break down and get more reps. :p

You already have a beautiful IWC Big Pilot. You COULD try for a Cousteau Diver, but a black-faced Panerai is very you, I think.

Deployants are usually 24/22, so 22mm at buckle end. Depending on if you want an used OEM (U$75-200) to be found on Risti Accessories corner, or rep models like the very good one from DSN himself, you can spend around $20-40 for a new rep one.

DSN gives you a choice of straps when you buy his watches. Why not just ask for one to be a PU with deplo? I'm sure he wouldn't say no to you, Raymond. :)

  15. :wub::thumbsupsmileyanim::wub::thumbsupsmileyanim::wub::thumbsupsmileyanim::wub:

Me love you long time!!!

    LOL!

And yes, I meant rubber diver strap, the black variety like this.

    post-6973-1190971712_thumb.jpg

    With deployant.

    post-6973-1190971723_thumb.jpg

Not the SS bracelet, since (1) I remembered one was on its way. (2) Nhuh-uh! I only have one and I'm not giving that up even for His Royal Sweetness! ;)

Browns it is. I have LOTS of those too. Very few blacks...

EDIT: TeeJay, I will send this off the moment I look presentable and not like some freakshow attraction...seriously, I'm vain. ;( Hopefully, by Monday!

EDIT #2: Made sure I used paper when handling it (never handling it directly), and I quickly put it back in its wrapping.

  16. Anyway, you can't compare any of that to Stewarts 'buffoon' outfits. Without wishing to speak ill of the dead, the man did it for effect.

    I actually agree with that!

It's hard to explain, but he did it ONLY to stand out. Someone said of him that he told that person he didn't want to be yet another blond, blue-eyed professional golfer around...

JP on the other hand is naturally 'eccentric'. His choice of vintage Rollie speaks volumes. It was made for someone like that.

But, though I completely understand that Jesper is an individualist, I wouldn't say he was that far different from Payne Stewart's impulse in looking different.

Jesper is the son of one of Sweden's foremost comedians, if memory serves, so this could be a form of poking fun at the whole spectacle of golf, with its rules, with its formality.

But as you said, he ultimately chose a specific designer for his sportswear, and that to me is not truly eccentricism.

Eccentrics do not care of the effect they make on the world. They do so not to stand out, but because they are comfortable in their own skin, but also, self-indulgent and rather childish at times.

Ludwig II of Bavaria -- true eccentric

Dennis Rodman, ex-NBA player -- fake eccentric

    Michael Jackson -- true eccentric

    Madonna -- fake eccentric

Small wonder Madonna and Wormy dated...

E.g.: I often wonder what people think when they see me go downstairs next to the pool area of my condo, and see me stick out my hand and take photos of my wrist. Or lug around my coats, Barbour jackets in an enormous leather duffle bag, for the Capers, and take photos of these items on the tables. Meanwhile, Ford models are around the pool peering at me through their D&G sunglasses.

But do I care? No. British eccentricism rules. :)

  17. BTW , this is how the Fahrenheit scale feels to people used to the metric system (and the other way around :)

You know, I NEVER have felt truly comfortable hearing weather forecasts in Metric.

31C means nothing to me. 88F, ah, typical SoFla day.

Similarly, if someone tells me the temperature outside is 15C, I check around to see if somehow I teleported to Nanuq's home. :)

PS: On currencies: it is not about convenience and differences of measurement. The reason we can’t have one currency has to do with money markets and macroeconomics.

    Yes, absolutely.

I genuinely and truly do not understand why some people seem almost offended at cultural differences. I preferred the Lira, I preferred the DM, I preferred Escudo (heh, I'm sure THEY prefer the Euro). ;)

Maybe it's because I'm (wait for it) a Historian, and find the trajectory each culture used tells the story of human life.

Take that away, and the world is the more vanilla for it.

But I'm not trenchant about the topic either. If change is afoot, then it could be ametric.

  18. Which of the systems seems more logic/modern too you ?

Dont wanna start a war here, this is just my 2 cents.

I for one quite understand WHY people want Metric.

In fact, you know this is truly a controversial topic. Crazies come out when discussing this topic in the real world...

I've spoken to Luddites who do not want a world based machinery, computers, innovation in general and lump Metric into this.

I've spoken to New World Order freaks who think the UN will take over the world, if we all adopt the Metric system. Both on the Left and Right, BTW. This used to be a province of right-wing nuts, but OH NO longer. Sad that.

I'm reminded of a British sitcom's character who was having her kitchen fitted with new cabinets. The salesman showed her brochures ...using Metric measurements.

"Oh, you can't use Metric in this house. It was built on feet and inches."

Finally, this topic, though I'm sure Fitmic didn't intend this in any way, is usually used to beat Americans over the head about their recalcitrant attitude regarding Metric. Yet another reason why the rest of the world just doesn't get or want to get American individuality.

What can you do, right? :)

  19. Uhm Vic, just curious: do you already own more straps than shoes? :bleh:

    *bangs head on keyboard*

As I have said in my almost 2000 posts :p, I am not a shoe girl. I have maybe 10 pair. I have well over 100 handbags. As well as perfumes, wallets, laptop sleeves by the dozen, etc. etc.

I just never understood the lure of shoes. My mother, OTOH...
