Never the same, if you understand Indian spices and the art of gently dry frying them before adding the other ingredients you would know why it is so hard to get the same results out of a packet.

To me, a truly "great" Indian restaurant is hard to find. UK does have some great finds, of course. Brick St in London was joke... One of the best meals I've ever had was at Rajdoot, in Cirencester, out in the Cotswolds. Holy Christ, now that was good. The closest I've found in the States was at Cilantro, in Tampa--or the now defunct Shamianna in Orlando. I usually go for a Chicken Korma, Chicken Makhni, or a nice Jalfrezi curry.

On a side note, Shamianna in O-town was so good we actually drove from an hour away every Friday for six years to have dinner there.

Gio hits on a good point here, a truly great Indian restaurant is actually very hard to find.

The simple reason for this is the vast majority of these restaurants are family owned and run businesses where all the waiters and cooks qualifications are more dependent on bloodline than experience.

ive had different experiences in bad Indian restaurants around the world.. I usually ask to speak to the chef and then speak to him in hindi/punjabi... it changes the way they cook for you till date the only BAD experience was one of those balti joints in liverpool..

If you guys want to try great Indian Food, you must try Bukhara Grill in NYC. Wonderful Kebabs, curries and breads. They have the very typical "americanized" indian food as well as the more traditional stuff.
