Thanks for the explanation, andreww, I didn't realize Omega was trying to match that shadow from the mission patch. But I still maintain that their engraver screwed up by indicating the shadow with a jagged line, and leaving what looks like Alaska floating in space!

The patch/image doesn't depict a shadow being cast on the Earth. That is simply the night side of the Earth.

When the moon does cast a shadow on the Earth, its called a solar eclipse. And, even then, the shadow only covers a small portion of the Earth's surface.

The missing chunk of earth is actually the moon's shadow as depicted in the astronauts suit patch.

And you are right Toad, this is a very beautiful piece when seen first hand.
